A Gallup poll released Friday found Americans are most likely to say Ronald Reagan was the nation's greatest president. On Monday, MSNBC's Chris Matthews was visibly angered about these results and actually insulted those in Reagan's camp as having a “limited memory” (video follows with transcript and commentary): CHRIS MATTHEWS: Well, today's George Washington's birthday, by the way. You can call it President's Day if you're buying a mattress. Otherwise, forget it. A new Gallup poll rates which presidents the American people think are best. By the way, this is a memory quiz more than a historic quiz. At number seven, the current guy in charge, Barack Obama, number seven. Number six, Franklin Delano Roosevelt. At five, George Washington, our first president. Number four, John F. Kennedy. Bill Clinton's number three. He's, by the way, the subject of our big historic documentary tonight at 10:00 Eastern. And Abraham Lincoln at number two. The greatest president in history, according to the American people with their limited memory, is Ronald Reagan. Keep in mind, these are not historian rankings. These are people's. By the way, they should insist before anybody participates in one of these ridiculous polls, “Please list the presidents and then pick the best.” Don't just go with the ones you can remember. It's like the greatest movie of all times was the one I just went to. Isn't it interesting that Matthews had no problem with Obama being listed even though he's been in office for only two years and currently is the only president besides Roosevelt to have an unemployment rate above eight percent for this many months? Beyond this, given the “Hardball” host's adoration for Clinton, would he have groused if one of the two presidents in our history to have been impeached took top honors? As for the memory issue, Matthews must be ignoring the appearance on this list of presidents long gone such as both Roosevelts, Truman, Eisenhower, and especially Lincoln, Washington and Jefferson. Does it really appear folks have memory issues when Abraham Lincoln comes in second in this kind of poll? This seems especially absurd as according to Gallup, “Reagan, Lincoln, or John F. Kennedy has been at the top of this 'greatest president' list each time this question has been asked in eight surveys over the last 12 years.” As such, Matthews' anger has nothing to do with people's memories or their intellectual capacities. He just can't stand the idea that Reagan ever comes in first. Pretty juvenile for a man that hosts an American cable news program, wouldn't you agree?
Continue reading …Lawrence O'Donnell on Monday made a prediction that most who hadn't heard of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker until a week ago might find astonishing. On MSNBC's “The Last Word,” the host told his perilously liberal guest Ezra Klein that if Walker's budget repair plan goes through, “He would instantaneously become the greatest hero in the Republican Party nationwide, I think would go to the top of Republicans' lists for possible presidential nominees in the upcoming election” (video follows with transcript and commentary): LAWRENCE O’DONNELL, HOST: Ezra, it seems to me his,his personal and political ambition is served by trying to get the full deal. If he were actually to get this thing through and get his Republican senators a chance to vote on it, he would instantaneously become the greatest hero in the Republican Party nationwide, I think would go to the top of Republicans' lists for possible presidential nominees in the upcoming election because I don’t think there’s an accomplishment quite like this out there that any other Republican can point to that would thrill the Republican base as much as this. EZRA KLEIN, WASHINGTON POST: He’d become a hero. I don’t know if he has enough time to go for 2012. But you know, Chris Christie’s become a very prominent Republican in part through some very well-publicized showdowns with union employees and union members at essentially press conferences. Walker is being able to do something he didn’t even dream of. With no one emerging as the presumptive favorite, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie who could fit that role claiming he's not ready, O'Donnell could be quite prescient in his observation. As I sat there watching Walker's press conference last Friday, I was struck by his calm and obviously intelligent manner. With all the attention he's currently getting, a victory here could indeed catapult him to national prominence. Consider, too, that President Obama, the Democrat Party, and all their media minions are now fully engaged in this battle. If when this is all over, Walker is the man left standing, he will be perceived as the David that slew the entire left-wing machine in our nation. As O'Donnell correctly observed, is there anyone else in the Republican Party today with those credentials? With this in mind, it is a metaphysical certitude the Left and their willing accomplices in the press are going to pull out all the stops to defeat Walker's budget repair plan, for O'Donnell surely isn't the only liberal media member recognizing the Wisconsin governor's potential invincibility if his stone hits its mark.
Continue reading …MSNBC's Chris Matthews tried Monday to push the liberal media meme that Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker exempted police and firefighters from his budget repair plan because their unions endorsed him in last November's election. “Well one more time you're completely uninformed,” replied Republican State Senator Glenn Grothman who then proceeded to tell the facts to the obviously clueless “Hardball” host (video follows with transcript and commentary): CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Let me go to the Republican, Senator Grothman. My question of course is why does the Governor pick on the unions that didn't endorse him in the last campaign but give a free ride to the firefighters and the cops who did and the localities? Why did they get off and are allowed to continue to negotiate collectively? STATE SENATOR GLENN GROTHMAN (R-WISCONSIN): Well one more time you're completely uninformed. The firemen’s union around this state have campaigned against Republicans, and the statewide police have repeatedly campaigned against Republicans. Governor Walker is doing this out of financial necessity. And out of financial necessity the state with a $3 billion budget deficit has to do something. Governor Walker as well as the cities, counties and schools which all rely on state money can either lay people off or have everybody take a mild reduction in take home pay. Myself with a mild reduction in take home pay is part of that. Now we understand… MATTHEWS: Okay, you just said I’m wildly, once again I’m wildly out of, out of, wrong on the facts. GROTHMAN: Absolutely. MATTHEWS: You’re telling me that there aren't local affiliates, there aren't local union organizations at the county level, municipal level that didn't endorse your governor candidate when he ran. Are you saying they didn't endorse him, the firefighters and the cops? GROTHMAN: I can think of two small locals. The vast majority, the Wisconsin Professional Police Association, the vast majority of firemen's unions worked against Walker in this campaign and to say otherwise is completely to mislead your listening audience. So who's right? Well, as NewsBusters reported Friday, Walker addressed this very question with CBS's Chris Wragge on that morning's “Early Show”: WRAGGE: You say this is a modest request. Now some state workers have been hit harder than others. Your teachers union, which votes Democratic under normal circumstances, hit very hard. Yet your police, state trooper, firemen unions, who all supported and endorsed you, did not get touched in any of this. Why is that? WALKER: Well, Chris – Chris that actually is not true. There are 314 fire and police unions in the state. Four of them endorsed me. All the rest endorsed my opponent. But let's not take his word for it. Let's see what Politifact had to say about this very subject Monday: During the campaign last November, leaders of the Milwaukee Professional Firefighters Association and Milwaukee Police Association appeared in an ad supporting Walker and blasting his opponent, Democrat Tom Barrett. Walker also won endorsements from the West Allis Professional Police Association and the Wisconsin Troopers Association Walker didn’t get the endorsements of two statewide unions, the Wisconsin Professional Police Association and the Professional Fire Fighters of Wisconsin, which both backed Barrett. For the record, the governor told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the charge that he was exempting police and firefighters was “ridiculous.” He said he didn't recommend changing the rules for police officers and firefighters because he didn’t want public safety work disrupted. We then contacted the Wisconsin Professional Police Association, the statewide union that endorsed Walker's opponent last year. Executive director Jim Palmer said the statewide organization is much larger than the local Milwaukee police union that endorsed Walker. The state group has approximately 11,000 members versus Milwaukee’s roughly 1,400, he said. Similarly, the state firefighters association has more than 3,000, compared with the Milwaukee union’s 875. In reality, if Matthews or any of his staff knew had to do a Google search, this information is all a few keystrokes away. For instance,” THE WPPA ENDORSES TOM BARRETT FOR GOVERNOR “: Surrounded by law enforcement officers at a May 12th [2010] event, Tom Barrett received the endorsement of the Wisconsin Professional Police Association in his race to become the state’s next governor. The WPPA represents over 11,000 active and retired members from over 375 locals statewide. With over 70 years of service to law enforcement personnel, the WPPA is recognized as the leading law enforcement association in Wisconsin. Or how about ” Wisconsin Professional Fire Fighters endorse Tom Barrett for governor .” Finally, on an even grander scale, ” Barrett endorsed by National Association of Police Officers “: On behalf of the more than 240,000 men and women of law enforcement it represents, the National Association of Police Officers (NAPO) today endorsed Tom Barrett for Wisconsin governor in recognition of his long record of support for and public safety officials and issues. “NAPO is pleased to support your campaign and is confident of your support of Wisconsin’s law enforcement community,” NAPO executive director William J. Johnson wrote in a letter to Tom. NAPO is a coalition of police unions and associations from across the United States that serves to advance the interests of America’s law enforcement through legislative and legal advocacy, political action and education. Founded in 1978, NAPO now represents more than 1,000 police units and associations, 241,000 sworn law enforcement officers, 11,000 retired officers and more than 100,000 citizens who share a common dedication to fair and effective crime control and law enforcement. As such, this media meme advanced by Matthews Monday is a total fabrication. Either the “Hardball” host and his staff are completely incompetent and are incapable of identifying what is clearly available on the internet, or they are intentionally misinforming their viewers in order to show support for the protesters in Madison. Whatever the answer, the higher-ups at MSNBC should be doing something about this blatant negligence if they want their network to be in any way taken seriously.

Wisconsin is fine. Wisconsin is great, actually. Despite what you may have heard about Wisconsin’s finances, Wisconsin is on track to have a budget surplus this year. I am not kidding. I’m quoting their own version of the Congressional Budget Office, the state’s own nonpartisan “assess the state’s finances” agency. That agency said the month that the new Republican governor of Wisconsin was sworn in, last month, that the state was on track to have a $120 million budget surplus this year. So, then why exactly does Wisconsin look like this right now? (VIDEO CLIP PLAYS) MADDOW: Why is there a revolt in the American Midwest tonight? Why are we in day three of massive, massive protests — real upheaval in Wisconsin’s capital city of Madison? Why are we seeing what was described today by my friend John Nichols, a seventh-generation Wisconsinite, as perhaps the biggest protests that have been seen in that state since Vietnam? Why is this — look at this — why is this happening? As the state’s own finances show, it is not happening because people who work for the state are the cause of some horrible budget crisis. It’s not because teachers are lazy and rich. It’s not because greedy snowplow drivers have bankrupted the state somehow. The state is not bankrupt. Even though the state had started the year on track to have a budget surplus — now, there is, in fact, a $137 million budget shortfall. Republican Governor Scott Walker, coincidentally, has given away $140 million worth of business tax breaks since he came into office. Hey, wait. That’s about exactly the size of the shortfall. What is happening in Wisconsin right now has absolutely nothing to do with public workers. The headline here, the way this keeps getting shorthanded, is workers angry after state is forced by budget crisis to crack down. That’s not what’s going on. The state is not being forced to crack down. A lot of states do have budget crises right now, but heading into this year, Wisconsin was not one of them. Oh really, Rach? Well, that's not what Politifact found : Our conclusion: Maddow and the others are wrong. There is, indeed, a projected deficit that required attention, and Walker and GOP lawmakers did not create it. The confusion, it appears, stems from a section in [Director of the nonpartisan Legislative Fiscal Bureau Robert] Lang’s memo that — read on its own — does project a $121 million surplus in the state’s general fund as of June 30, 2011. But the remainder of the routine memo — consider it the fine print — outlines $258 million in unpaid bills or expected shortfalls in programs such as Medicaid services for the needy ($174 million alone), the public defender’s office and corrections. Additionally, the state owes Minnesota $58.7 million under a discontinued tax reciprocity deal. The result, by our math and Lang’s, is the $137 million shortfall. It would be closer to the $340 million figure if the figure included the $200 million owed to the state’s patient compensation fund, a debt courts have declared resulted from an illegal raid on the fund under former Gov. Jim Doyle. A court ruling is pending in that matter, so the money might not have to be transferred until next budget year. So, contrary to what Maddow and many in the media including on MSNBC have been claiming, Wisconsin does indeed have a budget deficit. And what about that tax cut Maddow and others in the press have been focusing so much attention on? Well, they've been misrepresenting that as well: The tax cuts will cost the state a projected $140 million in tax revenue — but not until the next two-year budget, from July 2011 to June 2013. The cuts are not even in effect yet, so they cannot be part of the current problem. Amazing. Politifact concluded: There is fierce debate over the approach Walker took to address the short-term budget deficit. But there should be no debate on whether or not there is a shortfall. While not historically large, the shortfall in the current budget needed to be addressed in some fashion. Walker’s tax cuts will boost the size of the projected deficit in the next budget, but they’re not part of this problem and did not create it. We rate Maddow’s take False. Nice job, Rach. Your employers must be so proud of you. But Maddow wasn't alone in presenting this lie. Her colleague Ed Schultz did it Friday evening: Governor Scott Walker wants you to believe that the only way he can solve his made-up budget crisis is by taking away union rights. He says if he raises taxes on the wealthy, jobs will die and businesses will leave Wisconsin. That, my friends, is an old, outright lie. And here's the proof. The previous governor, Democrat Jim Doyle, was handed a $3.2 billion deficit when he took office. But he passed a budget that left the state poised for a surplus this year. Maybe Politifact should bust him as well. (H/T NB reader Carl Gullang)

Continue reading …MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell on Monday expressed concern that someone like conservative author Ann Coulter has the “freedom” to make a joke about jailing journalists. This was amazing expressed moments before “The Last Word” host applauded the free flow of information that enticed and united protesters to rebel in Egypt (video follows with transcript and commentary): LAWRENCE O’DONNELL, HOST: Meanwhile, at the Conservative Political Action Conference, CPAC, Ann Coulter felt perfectly comfortable taking a contrarian stand against freedom, and the freedom-hating crowd loved it. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) ANN COULTER: What do you mean knowing that there are jailed journalists? I think there should be more jailed journalists. (END VIDEOTAPE) Nice cherry-pick. Here's a more complete video of that question and answer (forward to 1:57): According to CBSNews.com: The comments were sparked by a question about why Coulter and other Republicans advocate for free elections in Iraq but warn against them in Egypt. Coulter, echoing John Bolton, said that pre-revolution Egypt was an ally of the United States and “you don't go around disturbing countries where you have a loyal ally.” As O'Donnell moved forward bringing on OWN's Lisa Ling, he admitted not knowing the context of Coulter's remarks despite being offended by what was obviously a joke and a darned good one: O’DONNELL: I want to go quickly to what Ann Coulter said about jailed journalists. You’ve had some experience with this with your sister being held in North Korea and Bill Clinton coming to the rescue to get her out of there in a very dramatic situation. I am sure you and your family were terribly afraid of what was going to happen and how long she was going to be held. What is your reaction when you hear Ann Coulter just so flippantly make a reference like that? LISA LING, OWN NETWORK: It makes me incensed, and certainly there were those people who said my sister and her team should not have been there and they deserved the punishment they received, and that just angers me so much because I’m such a fierce advocate of free press. And I suppose if, if, if there weren't, we should just kind of sit and remain ignorant, and not have the desire and just allow people who sort of pontificate and profess to know things about which they may not know to be our sources of news. And I think that's actually a very dangerous attitude, and I think that these days with so much media, the need for journalism and people being out in the field is more important than ever. O’DONNELL: And it seems that what we're seeing there with Ann Coulter and with the thinking even in the focus group is this huge abundance of American freedom. We are so free that Ann can just make a joke about jailing journalists. I, I think it was a joke. I’m not sure what the full context was. And that those people in the focus group can very freely just think whatever they feel like thinking without necessarily having facts to back it up. Is there, is there a kind of laziness that you find that comes with our freedom? We are so free that Ann can just make a joke about jailing journalists? Does O'Donnell wish there were laws governing such speech? Does he feel the same way about jokes made by liberal comedians like Bill Maher, or should only conservatives be so constrained? LING: I actually don't think there's a lot of thinking at all. I think that we're so sort of desperate to be told what to think that we take so much of what we hear as, as, as fact or reality or as news, and I actually think that that's dangerous. O’DONNELL: Now, you've been everywhere. You've just been everywhere on the planet. Surely you have been to Egypt. LING: I have been to Egypt, yes. O’DONNELL: Of course. Like, how many times? LING: Yeah, I've been to Egypt twice. O’DONNELL: What you saw happen in the previous 20 days in Egypt, how much did that surprise you? What of it made sense to you as you were watching it unfold? Now, watch as these two liberal media members, who both were appalled by Coulter's freedom to make a joke, are suddenly enthralled by the freedom of information that led Egyptians to protest their government's oppression: LING: Well, it was surprising, but having just sort of seen what happened in Iran last year was, I think that there's a movement happening throughout the world. It is increasingly more difficult for any dictator to maintain this kind of stranglehold over the people. And I just think it is so incredible that these social networks that were created by American young people are now destabilizing governments and allowing millions of people to organize. I think the consequences however for the U.S. government will be kind of interesting. I think from here on out, we really need to to really rethink U.S. policy toward authoritarian regimes, because they, they can no longer continue to, to, to maintain the stranglehold. O’DONNELL: Yeah, the social media and the internet and all of this free flow of information is something that the regimes don't know how to deal with. They used to be able to just clamp down on newspapers, control the newspapers and you're done. That's it. That controls information in these countries. But it is different now. Some classic liberal hypocrisy there, don't you agree? There's way too much freedom in America allowing folks like Coulter to make jokes and Iowa Republicans to think the President isn't a Christian or a citizen, but such freedom is a wonderful thing when people thousands of miles away rebel against their leaders. And it's just awful when foreign regimes prevent information from being disseminated that might be dangerous to their existence, but when people in America express views counter to the regime in power here, it's a disgrace. So, in this pair's view, conservatives in America should have less freedom of speech than folks in countries thousands of miles away. It must take a heapin' helpin' of rationalizations to advocate the tenets of the First Amendment in distant lands while you rue its existence in the nation where it was created.
