For Second Day in a Row, Mitchell Pitches for Gun Control: ‘Somebody’s Got to Listen in Washington’

Andrea Mitchell, for a second day in a row , pushed for more gun control on her MSNBC show as she encouraged Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter, “You and Mike Bloomberg…have all been yelling and screaming,” about more restrictive anti-gun measures, “Somebody's got to listen in Washington.” Initially invited on Thursday's Andrea Mitchell Reports to discuss the Obama administration's push for more green jobs, Nutter wasn't allowed to finish the segment without Mitchell pressing him: “As a big city mayor, what are you saying to the White House about waiting for this gun control speech we keep hearing about?” On yesterday's show Mitchell expressed disappointment, to

Chris Matthews Announces Fawning Special on Bill Clinton Titled ‘President of the World’

The folks at MSNBC's “Hardball” announced a new hour-long special on Monday, slated to air in late February. Titled “President of the World”, the special will focus on “former U.S. President turned humanitarian and diplomat extraordinaire” Bill Clinton. But don't worry, like all “Hardball” episodes , this one will be “absolutely nonpartisan.” MSNBC released the following press release on Monday (via Inside Cable News ): NEW YORK—January 31, 2011—There’s not a single political figure today with the global reach and influence of Bill Clinton—a former U.S. President turned humanitarian and diplomat extraordinaire. No one else in today’s political arena has the ability to command the attention of world leaders and organizations everywhere quite like he does. This Presidents’ Day, MSNBC’s Chris Matthews will take viewers behind the scenes of Clinton’s life in the one-hour documentary “President of the World: The Bill Clinton Phenomenon.” The special will air Monday, February 21, at 10 pm ET/PT. Since President Clinton left office in January 2001, he’s taken on a new and very successful role as an international humanitarian—his Clinton Global Initiative, Clinton Health Access Initiative, the William J. Clinton Foundation and countless other worthy efforts have made him a hero to peoples across the globe. Clinton’s innate talent for diplomacy gained him international recognition in 2009 when he aided in the release of two imprisoned American journalists from North Korea. In the last year alone, he’s provided invaluable political support to President Obama, hitting the campaign trail for countless Democratic candidates leading up to the November 2010 midterm elections. In “President of the World: The Bill Clinton Phenomenon,” “Hardball” host Chris Matthews managed to spend a whirlwind week with Bill Clinton—hopping from the Clinton Global Initiative in New York City to Ireland, where Matthews sat down for a one-on-one interview with the former president. In addition, the hour includes intimate interviews with many of Clinton’s close friends and colleagues, including Tony Blair, Terry McAuliffe, John Podesta, Mary Steenburgen and Kevin Spacey. “President of the World: The Bill Clinton Phenomenon” is an MSNBC original production and was produced for MSNBC by Peacock Productions. For Peacock Productions, Keith McKay is Executive Producer and Kate Hampson is Producer. Benjamin Ringe and Knute Walker are Co-Executive Producers of Peacock Productions. Sharon Scott is Executive-in-Charge of Peacock Productions. For MSNBC, Mike Rubin is Vice President, Long Form Programming. Scott Hooker is Senior Executive Producer, MSNBC. Timothy Smith is Senior Producer, MSNBC.

Olbermann Bashes Vietnam Vet’s Letter to the Editor About Him

Keith Olbermann must be starving for attention since his surprise exit from MSNBC. On Sunday, he actually bashed a letter to the editor of the Boston Globe written about him by a Vietnam vet: The object of Olbermann's disaffection was one Ed Driscoll who was quite pleased by the former “Countdown” host's departure from MSNBC: I participated in more than 10 combat missions in Vietnam, so I know a mission is not a war. Someone should have told that to Olbermann, as he demonstrated his ignorance by equating the two for years on his show. He would end by saying it has been so many days since President Bush declared “Mission Accomplished’’ in Iraq. Bush never said that. Olbermann was referring to a sign on an aircraft carrier that said “Mission Accomplished.’’ The president declared an end to major combat operations, and therefore the aircraft carrier was headed home. In Bush’s speech, he said that much work has yet to be done. The sign was for the brave people who had completed their mission. Is this really the dumbest letter to the editor of the century, or is Olbermann's kingsize ego so starved for attention that he doesn't feel the slightest inclination to show respect for a veteran voicing his opinion in a forum specifically designed for such a thing? Honestly, if you had just been paid millions of dollars to stay off television for a few months allowing you to regroup before your next move, would you be commenting on letters to the editor from total strangers, or would you try to find something more worthwhile to do with your time? On the other hand, since this nonsense was retweeted by 100 of Olbermann's followers, this is probably the exact kind of attention he craves at this stage of his career. Pretty sad, isn't it?

Kurtz: MSNBC Complains About CNN Airing Bachmann’s SOTU Response Then Spends Days Talking About Her

Howard Kurtz on Sunday pointed out a delicious irony involving MSNBC and Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.). After complaining about CNN's decision to air the Congresswoman's response to President Obama's State of the Union address Tuesday, MSNBC spent the next several days giving far more attention to her than to the official GOP respondent (video follows with transcript and commentary): HOWARD KURTZ, CNN: When it comes to cable news, all members of Congress aren't created equal. On the left, Democratic Congressman Alan Grayson, who just lost his seat, got plenty of exposure on MSNBC for saying such things as the Republican health plan for sick people is “die quickly.” On the right, Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann became a Fox News star — she occasionally pops up on other channels as well — for saying such things as Barack Obama may have anti-American views. But more incendiary is why the bookers go after them. So when a brainy, budget-cutting hawk, Paul Ryan, delivered the official GOP response to the president's State of the Union, it was Bachmann who made news by making a video appearance for the Tea Party Express thanks, in part, to this network. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) WOLF BLITZER, CNN ANCHOR: I just want to remind our viewers, the only place they'll see on television that speech live, Michele Bachmann's Tea Party speech, will be right here on CNN. (END VIDEO CLIP) (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) REP. MICHELE BACHMANN (R), MINNESOTA: After the $700 billion bailout, the trillion-dollar stimulus, and the massive budget bill with over 9,000 earmarks, many of you implored Washington to please stop spending money that we don't have. (END VIDEO CLIP) (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) RACHEL MADDOW, MSNBC: But tonight, inexplicably, a national news network decided that they would give Michele Bachmann a job that her own party never did. CNN ran it live on their network. They aired it on national TV. A remarkable act of journalistic intervention to elevate, in effect, at group with which they are cosponsoring a presidential debate, to elevate that group to the level of the major parties in this country. (END VIDEO CLIP) KURTZ: So what did the good folks at MSNBC spend the next day talking about? I'll give you a hint. It wasn't Paul Ryan. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Everybody in this room has probably looked at the wrong camera. LAWRENCE O'DONNELL, MSNBC: You know, I've got a room full of cameras here, and I feel like this could happen to me at any moment. UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Michele Bachmann is out there, she's a wildcard. CHRIS MATTHEWS, MSNBC: Did she skip the entire financial crisis of 2008 and 2009? (END VIDEO CLIP) KURTZ: So did CNN make a mistake in airing Bachmann's speech? Joining us now to talk about that, and the way most pundits handled the president's State of the Union, Margaret Carlson, columnist for Bloomberg News and Washington editor of “The Week” magazine; Michael Shear of “The New York Times,” the lead writer for “The Caucus” blog; and Jim Geraghty, contributing editor at “National Review.” So, Margaret, did CNN elevate Bachmann unfairly, as Rachel Maddow says? MARGARET CARLSON, BLOOMBERG NEWS: Well, Bachmann makes herself news. I mean, she's — the Republicans create people like Michael Steele and Sarah Palin and Bachmann. She belongs to the Bachmann party. She is on her own. She goes out. She always makes news. She's always colorful. She's always incendiary. And we cover news, and she's always willing to make it. KURTZ: Jim Geraghty, if journalists are going to talk about Bachmann all the time, then what's the big deal for CNN to give her five minutes for that video so that people could see what it is they would then be debating? Kurtz was spot on with this observation, for from Tuesday on, MSNBC gave far more attention to Bachmann than Ryan mentioning her name 191 times and his 134.

Palin and Bachmann Nitpicker Chris Matthews Says Panama Canal Is In Egypt

As NewsBusters has been reporting almost ad nauseam, Chris Matthews spent much of last week mercilessly lambasting Sarah Palin and Michele Bachmann with cherry-picked and distorted quotes far afield of their intended meaning. On Friday, the “Hardball” host got a touch of instant karma when he said the Panama Canal is in Egypt (video follows with transcript and commentary): CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: You know, the great thing about Egypt is it’s its own country. It was always there before there was an America or Britain or anything, there has been an Egypt. It’s like China. It’s a real country. It wasn’t just carved off the map or out of the map by the Europeans, like so many African and third world countries have. It’s got a real rooted history. It’s not just an Arab country. It was a country long before it was an Arab country — long before Islam, there was an Egypt. Will it see itself in this moment of chaos as joining a greater Islamic world or is holding to its national identity? AMB. MARC GINSBERG, FMR. U.S. AMBASSADOR TO MOROCCO (via telephone)GINSBERG: There’s no doubt that the Egyptians view themselves as the center of culture in the Arab and the Muslim world and the center of Islamic learning. I studied there. I used to take classes at the al-Azhar University, which is considered to be the pre-eminent Islamic institution in the Muslim world, Chris. MATTHEWS: Right. GINSBERG: And the fact is that there’s enormous pride going back to the history of the pharaohs. The Egyptians embrace their ancient culture. But they’re very dissatisfied with their current regime. MATTHEWS: Well, let me ask you about the prospects we’re looking at as an American. We’re looking at the map of the world right now and where Egypt sits in the world. It’s so strategically located. It has, of course, the Nile River. It has, of course, the Panama Canal. Someone must have spoken in Matthews’ earplug, for he corrected himself moments later: MATTHEWS: It is the largest and only true partner even if it’s a cold peace with Israel. It is, in fact, the key to whatever Middle East peace we’re able to arrange in our lifetime. It always tends to support the moderate forces in – the Suez Canal. It has always supported the moderate forces in that region. In fairness, I know full well that Matthews is aware of what countries these respective canals reside in. This was a mistake. People make them. The problem is that folks like Matthews, who so desperately hate Palin and Bachmann, are hanging on their every utterance looking to pounce on anything that can be twisted and misconstrued to embarrass and defame these conservative women. As we demonstrated last week, this is even when the comments aren’t nearly as out of line as people like Matthews claim. Contrary to the prevailing liberal meme, Bachmann did not state last Saturday that the Founding Fathers ended slavery before the Emancipation Proclamation and the Civil War. Unlike what Matthews reported Thursday, Palin did not say the Russians beat us in the Space Race. Even the perilously liberal Tommy Christopher admitted as much Saturday. Compounding matters further is folks like Matthews give Democrats a pass when they commit faux pas. Consider all the gaffes and blunders made by candidates Barack Obama and Joe Biden that went completely uncovered during the 2008 campaign. What Americans have painfully learned in recent years is that when people on the Left err, so-called journalists consider them only human. But when conservatives are caught even coming close to making a slip of the tongue, they’re unfit for office. With this in mind, Matthews better be darned careful, for if he’s going to demand perfection from conservatives, we’re going to demand it of him. What's good for conservative geese should be good for liberal gander. (H/T NB reader Miles Taylor)

Not to worry, Ed Schultz told his radio listeners on Jan. 11 — the bellicose “Psycho Talk” segment of his MSNBC program would remain on the show. Here's a clip of Schultz claiming that in the wake of the Tucson shooting, with liberals blaming an amorphous “climate of hate” for triggering the bloodshed, “Psycho Talk” would endure ( audio ) — Let me just start it right out today, I am not toning it down. Because according to the conservatives, what Sarah Palin did and what Michele Bachmann says, that didn't have anything to do with what happened on Saturday, right? You know, this may be the biggest lie that Fox News has ever told. Roger Ailes says the network will tone down fiery rhetoric. And they defend Sarah Palin. Sarah Palin's now the victim, did you know that? Well, isn't her silence deafening? Why is Sarah Palin so silent? Is she feeling guilty these days? Why is it that she kept those crosshairs up there for months on end until the shooting? No guilt there at all, is there? Folks, let me tell you something, I'm making this announcement right away. We are not changing “The Ed Show” on MSNBC. As long as they open their mouths over there on the right, we will continue to have the segment called “Psycho Talk,” because that's exactly what it is. And as soon as they say that they're not going to vote to repeal health care, then I'll make some changes.

Maddow Fill-In Host Says Cap & Trade is Dead, Then Asks Guest About its Prospects

Chris Hayes, Washington editor of The Nation, appeared a bit befuddled Friday night when he sat in for Rachel Maddow on her MSNBC show. First, here's Hayes talking about former West Virginia governor Joe Manchin, who was elected last fall to represent the state in the Senate ( audio ) — HAYES: If you've heard of Joe Manchin, it's probably for one of three reasons. Perhaps you live in West Virginia. Mr. Manchin was the very popular governor of the great state of West Virginia and is now the state's junior senator after replacing the late senator Robert Byrd last year. Or if you followed this show closely last year, you might remember Mr. Manchin for his no vote heard 'round the world. The senator voted against repealing don't ask, don't tell. If neither of those biographical facts about Joe Manchin ring a bell, this one might. He approved and paid for what just might be the single greatest political ad of the 2010 election cycle — The ad is then played (and can be seen here ), with Manchin carrying a hunting rifle and saying this —
