Fox Dominates (Again), Takes Top 11 Cable News Slots in February

The Fox News Channel absolutely dominated its cable news competition in February. In terms of overall viewers, the top 11 cable news shows were all on Fox. In the coveted 25-54 demographic – the group that advertisers pay particularly close attention to – Fox took 11 of the top 15 spots. The Rachel Maddow Show earned the top spot for an MSNBC program. Despite her struggles with factual accuracy of late, it seems Maddow has assumed the role of leading prime time anchor left vacant by Keith Olbermann's departure. CNN's AC360 led that channel, beating out Maddow in the demo with 304,000 viewers, but trailing MSNBC and Fox leaders in total viewership. TVNewser provided this pair of handy charts for our reference. The first is total audience and second is demo viewership. Feb '11 P2+ cable news rankers Feb '11 A25-54 cable news rankers

Maddow Continues to Misrepresent Union Campaign Contributions

It is said that if you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. Maybe this is Rachel Maddow's intention behind continually saying the following on the MSNBC show bearing her name (video follows with transcript and commentary): RACHEL MADDOW: The longer it goes on, the clearer it becomes that this whole fight is not about what they say it is about. This whole fight is not about the budget. This fight is about destroying the unions. It is about corporate titans who give lots of money to Republicans and who can get them on the phone for 20 minutes in the middle of a crisis, guys like David Koch wanting to bust the unions, and it is about dismantling a key part of the Democratic base in terms of fund raising. You want to see those numbers from the 2010 elections again? Right. Okay, unions are the only significant outside spending group that Democrats have to compete with the conservatives. Union members also tend to support Democratic causes and they provide a good chunk of the get out the vote infrastructure that Democrats rely on to win elections. The Republican Party more than almost anything else represents corporate interest. The Democratic Party more than anything else represents people who work for corporate interests or people who represent something other than corporations. As she was saying this, the following graphic was on the screen clearly reading “Outside Groups”: As NewsBusters first reported last Wednesday, Maddow made virtually the same statement on her February 18 program: MADDOW: Of the top ten outside spending groups in last year's elections, seven of them were right wing groups, groups like the Chamber of Commerce, and Karl Rove`s organizations, which are mostly funded by billionaires. Conservative groups like the American Future Fund. The only non-conservative groups that cracked the top ten in the last election were the Public Employees Union and the SEIU, and the teachers union, that's it. In terms of large scale money spent in elections, unions are the only competition that Republicans have. The following Monday she said: MADDOW: Here again are the top ten big money contributors in last year's elections, seven of the top ten are right wing. The only three that are not are — ding, ding, ding — unions. The following day she said this to Jay Leno on NBC's “Tonight Show”: MADDOW: But, if you look at like the last election cycle, of the top ten people donating money in that election, seven of them were giving to Republicans. It was all corporate interests and right-wing PACs and stuff. Seven of the ten were all right-wing. And the only three that weren't were unions. Since February 18, she has uttered this falsehood at least four times on four programs airing four different days. If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. Once again, here are the facts. Maddow is actually referring to ” outside non-party committees ” wherein seven of the top ten contributors in 2010 were indeed conservative, with the only three liberal contributors being unions. These are groups that contribute money for political causes but not specific candidates. That's why they're deemed “non-party.” If you look at all ” outside spending groups ” for 2010 – which by Maddow's wording consistently has been the implication – you'll find that four of the top ten contributors were liberal with only two of them being unions. This completely destroys her point that “unions are the only significant outside spending group that Democrats have to compete with the conservatives” thereby invalidating her assertion that this is the reason Gov. Walker is trying to blame the “supposed” deficits on public sector unions in his state. If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. What makes this even more absurd is the commercial airing on MSNBC to promote Maddow's program: MADDOW: News is about stories. It’s about finding all the disparate facts and then finding their coherence. Doing this right takes rigor and a devotion to facts that borders on obsessive. At the end of the day, though, this is about what’s true in the world. In the promo for the defacto new face of MSNBC, Maddow claims, “It’s about finding all the disparate facts and then finding their coherence. Doing this right takes rigor and a devotion to facts that borders on obsessive. At the end of the day, though, this is about what’s true in the world.” Yet at least four times in the last seven business days, Maddow has completely misrepresented the very same thing about 2010 campaign contributions. Over and over. If you tell a lie big enough and keep repeating it, people will eventually come to believe it. The folks at MSNBC and Comcast should be ashamed of themselves for allowing this to happen. Is there any integrity at this network, or did they learn from Keith Olbermann that such a virtue is unimportant when advancing a cause?

New MSNBC Host Martin Bashir Lashes Out at ‘Disingenuous’ Move by Tea Party Congressman

On his first day at MSNBC, new host Martin Bashir immediately adopted the network's liberal line, attacking a conservative Congressman for advocating severe spending cuts, deriding it as ” the most disingenuous play on the American people .” Previewing the interview with Representative Joe Walsh of Illinois, Bashir noted that he has refused congressional health care. The anchor solemnly wondered, “Is that his idea of health care for every American?” Bashir, who previously co-anchored ABC's Nightline, offered this loaded question to the Republican: “You're a freshman in this Congress. Are you satisfied that your first significant act in Washington will help bring the government to a standstill?” The cable host closed out this interview and then snidely segueing to his next guest: “And for more on the political ramifications of this budget battle, including, hopefully, a little truth serum, let's bring in NBC news analyst and senior political editor at the Huffington Post, Howard Fineman.” A transcript of the segment, which aired at 3:10pm EST, follows: MARTIN BASHIR: And when we come back, a congressman who refuses health care, even with a wife who has a preexisting condition. Is that his idea of health care for every American? 3:13 BASHIR: Now to the possible government shutdown looming at end of the week. Both parties say they're considering a Republican plan to keep things up and running, but the clock is ticking. Speaker of the House John Boehner says continuing to do the people's work, well, it's a moral issue. SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE JOHN BOEHNER: We have a moral responsibility to address the problems that we face and that means working together to cut spending and to rein in government, not shutting it down. BASHIR: Congressman Joe Walsh is a Republican from Illinois and he joins me live from the capitol. Mr. Walsh, good afternoon. REP. JOE WALSH: Good afternoon, Martin. Congrats on the show. BASHIR: Thank you very much. You're a freshman in this Congress. Are you satisfied that your first significant act in Washington will help bring the government to a standstill? WALSH: You know, absolutely. Republicans have been clear that we don't want a shut down government. And I think it's very impressive that we sent a two-week- a two-week budget over to the Democrats in the Senate to try to keep the dialogue going so that we can avoid shutting down government. But, Martin, make no mistake, they sent us here to cut spending, and that's what's in this two-week CR. BASHIR: Let's just sit for a moment on the cutting and spending. Isn't this the most disingenuous play on the American people? Because from Planned Parenthood to collective bargaining in Wisconsin, spending cuts is the excuse. But the real target, well, that's your political opponents. WALSH: No. You know what? Martin, spending cuts are the real truth. That's why 87 Republican freshmen were sent to Washington. The Speaker alluded to it as a moral issue. It is a moral issue. Our country's broke and that's because we're spending too much. We're on a path right now that's going to bankrupt our kids and grand kids and that's morally irresponsible. That's almost criminal to do to future generations. The Republicans are keeping their word, and we're systemically going to go at the spending problem. BASHIR: You've said President Obama ought to be ashamed of himself for not dealing with- for not dealing with entitlements in his budget. You say it's time to raise the retirement age and means test Social Security. But, do you have support from Speaker John Boehner? WALSH: Absolutely. Look at Paul Ryan. Look at Paul Ryan to the north of me in Wisconsin. He has been a leader on this. He stuck his neck out last year and proposed reforms of Medicare and Social Security. Martin, I stand by those words. The President put out a budget and he should be ashamed of himself because he punted on entitlement reform. And everybody in this town knows that you've got to have a serious dialogue about Social Security and Medicare because that's where the bulk of the spending is. The Republicans are not going to be afraid to take the lead on this. And I think the American people are ready for that discussion. BASHIR: Is it true that your own wife has decided to reject any health care insurance at this time? WALSH: I pledged a year ago that, if I were elected, I'd turn down all congressional health care and retirement benefits. I just don't believe, as a member of Congress, you should take those. I don't want to increase the federal footprint, no matter how much it costs. It means a lot to me. And my wife was with me every step of the way. She had a procedure last week, Martin. She did have a preexisting condition and like a lot of Americans

Maddow: Fox Isn’t a News Channel – It’s a ‘McCarthyite Chamber of Horrors’

The presumptive face of the most biased and propagandist television news outlet in America had some harsh words for the media organization that bests hers in ratings virtually every hour of every day. In a piece published by the Daily Beast Sunday, Rachel Maddow hypocritically told Howard Kurtz that Fox News has “become a McCarthyite chamber of horrors… You can't really call yourself a news channel if that's what you broadcast”: In the Olbermann tradition, Maddow is increasingly denouncing Fox, saying that Glenn Beck, in monologues about Muslims, has been “running baroque conspiracies that are designed to freak people out about bogeymen coming to get them, conspiracies that are unsupported by the facts.” Fox, she charges, has “become a McCarthyite chamber of horrors… You can't really call yourself a news channel if that's what you broadcast.” Maddow's repeated attacks have not provoked a response from Fox. This coming from a woman that has recently been skewered by NewsBusters, Politifact, and the Baltimore Sun's David Zurawik for her highly-partisan, often false statements on air. In the past ten days alone, Maddow has come under fire for a number of clearly erroneous comments she's made about the union battle in Wisconsin. Kurtz even addressed this on CNN's “Reliable Sources” Sunday, but failed to point it out in his rather glowing column: While the host devours information online, stuffing printouts in thick folders, there are missteps. She touted an item on the website ChristWire urging Sarah Palin to speak out on Egypt—unaware that it was a satirical blog with such headlines as ARE FACEBOOK SEX GANGS USING “WIKILEAKS” TO TARGET YOUR TEENS? (Maddow good-naturedly confessed her error on Twitter.) Indeed, but that was weeks ago and clearly a trifle compared to what she stepped in last Thursday when she claimed Wisconsin had a budget surplus. As Kurtz was going to be interviewing Politifact's editor about this episode on the same day his profile of Maddow was to be published, it is quite curious why he didn't mention it in his piece. Consider, too, that Politifact has to date reviewed eleven statements by Maddow finding four false, one barely true, three half-true, two mostly true, and only one completely true. That means she was scored 100 percent right in only nine percent of their analyses. And this woman has the nerve to say Fox isn't a news channel.

Maddow Digs Herself Deeper With More Election Spending Semantics

For Rachel Maddow, corrections never come easy. But while the MSNBC host has at least offered corrections where she has previously gotten it wrong – granted, with the immense level of sarcasm and snark that is her hallmark – a recent flap with online watchdogs has the indignant Maddow splitting hairs in near-comedic fashion in an effort to avoid admitting she was mistaken. But the numbers still belie her position. The exchange began with Maddow's appearance on Leno Tuesday night. She falsely claimed that “of the top ten people donating money in [the 2010 midterms], seven of them were giving to Republicans.” In fact, as NB's Noel Sheppard pointed out , Maddow had it exactly backwards: 7 of the top 10 individual contributors gave more to Democrats than Republicans during the past cycle (and a lot more at that). But since NB and others – including cable news blogger and former NB contributor Johnny Dollar – pointed out this factual inaccuracy, Maddow has not corrected her claim. Instead, she has lashed out at the people pointing out her mistake, and tried to shift the terms of the debate. Maddow responded to her critics during her Thursday night show. In her own defense, she said (via J$'s retort – italics are mine): Of the top ten, seven of the top ten from the last election are contributing to the right. Only three of them are contributing to the left. And the only three that are contributing to the left are unions….There are only three out of the top ten contributors of big money of outside groups in the last election who are not contributing to right-wing causes and they are the unions. So rather than admitting that she was wrong, Maddow moved the goal posts – on Tuesday, she was discussing individual donors, but on Thursday she shifted the discussion to independent groups that spend money on non-partisan (in the sense that they are not affiliated with a party or candidate) political communications. Maddow's latter claim is correct: seven of the ten top independent spenders are conservative, while only three, all labor unions, are liberal. But that does not make her initial statement regarding individual contributors true. Even the less tangible point Maddow tried to make – that conservative money dominates elections – is not exactly a slam dunk given the data. OpenSecrets.org, the source for data used by both Maddow and her critics, reports that businesses, labor unions, and “ideological” groups, their political action committees (PACs), and their individual members all gave more to Democrats than Republicans during the 2010 election cycle . Maddow's myopic focus on the top 10 independent spenders is virtually the only way she could salvage her argument. But the notion that spending by third party groups denotes more control over the electoral process than money given to political candidates is specious at best. And as OpenSecrets.org notes at the link above, Democratic candidates for office took in more money from every category, including “other,” in the 2010 election cycle. In short, not only was Maddow's initial claim wrong, her follow-up assertion was an excercise in semantics, and her underlying premise that conservative sources of political money dominate elections is not supported by the data. And yet Maddow continues spinning her web.

TV Networks Give Scant Coverage to Democrat David Wu’s Strange Antics

A sitting congressman admitted earlier this week to seeking psychiatric treatment after news broke that he had sent bizarre photos of himself in a tiger costume to staff members and taken prescription pain killers given to him by an unnamed campaign donor. Seven of Oregon Democrat David Wu's staff members reportedly quit after the 2010 campaign due to his bizarre behavior. The second largest newspaper in Wu's state has called for him to resign . But apparently some of the largest news outlets in the country, including two of the three news networks and two of the three cable news channels, don't think a mentally unstable congressman and all of his bizarre activities merit even an on-air mention. Nearly a week after the story broke, ABC is the only network to give the story on-air coverage, and Fox is the only cable channel to mention it on-air. The Oregonian newspaper reported on Friday, February 18: Three days before the Nov. 2 election, U.S. Rep. David Wu’s most loyal and senior staffers were so alarmed by his erratic behavior that they demanded he enter a hospital for psychiatric treatment. Their concern had been spiking for weeks in tandem with the Oregon Democrat's increasingly unpredictable performance on the campaign trail and in private. He was loud and sometimes angry, some of them told The Oregonian. He said kooky things to staff and — more worrisome with a tough election fast approaching — around potential voters and donors… For some staffers, the beginning of the end was Wednesday, Oct. 27, when Wu delivered a belligerent and rambling 19-minute monologue to Washington County Democrats that some in the audience said was inappropriate for the friendly crowd. His behavior left staff members aghast… Wu also forwarded a cheery photo of himself dressed as a tiger for Halloween. He had both hands — paws — held up to either side of his face. He was grinning broadly. At that point, staff knew something was terribly wrong with their candidate. That Saturday, Oct. 30, they checked for available hospital beds and consulted with his psychiatrist. Veteran pollster Grove sent staffers the e-mail that signaled the end. She declined to comment for this story but earlier told The Oregonian that she would not work for Wu again. In an interview with George Stephanopoulos on ABC's “Good Morning America” Tuesday, Wu admitted that he had sought psychiatric help after the election. “I did some things, I said some things which I sincerely regret now,” Wu said, “And as a result of those things I saw fit to consult professional help.” Wu insisted that he is fit to serve. But given this bizarre behavior and revelations that a sitting U.S. congressman needed psychiatric treatment, why hasn't the story been picked up by numerous major national news outlets? As mentioned, CBS and NBC have yet to even mention the story, according to a Nexis search. And though Wu's behavior earned stories from USA Today and the Washington Post, neither the New York Times nor the Los Angeles Times has written a word on the scandal. On cable news, where more seedy and sensational stories usually earn significant coverage, the Wu scandal has been almost entirely ignored. Fox News briefly mentioned the story on Monday, according to Nexis, but neither MSNBC nor CNN has even acknowledged the scandal on air. Depending on the fallout – whether or not Wu resigns – it may get more coverage, but so far one can't help but think that if Wu were a Republican, news outlets that have remained silent would be on the story like, er, stripes on a tiger.

Indignant Norah O’Donnell Defends Obama’s Lack Of Leadership On Libya

If Time-magaziner-turned-WH-press-sec Jay Carney ever tires of defending Pres. Obama, Norah O'Donnell clearly seems ready to step in . . . When on today's Morning Joe Donny Deutsch described PBO as having a passive leadership style as evidenced by his approach to Libya, health care and other issues, an indignant O'Donnell piped up, defending the president's passivity. View video after the jump. Norah's point was that PBO couldn't risk a more aggressive approach, given that Americans remain at risk in Libya. Maybe so.
