White guys : The largest group of early voters in North Carolina is made up of white Republican men, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Democracy North Carolina, a campaign watchdog group. During the 2008 Democratic sweep, black Democratic women led all groups during the 17 days of early voting. But during the first three days of early voting this year, it is white Republican men. “Early voting doesn’t favor one party or another, but reveals who’s most organized and enthusiastic about making their voices heard,” said Bob Hall, director of Democracy North Carolina. I’m sure somehow this will be spun as racism (against Obama) or sexism (against Nancy Pelosi) or homophobia (against Bawney Fwank).

Because they cheat : Stepaniak said church vans were volunteered to drive students to vote. The suit alleges three van loads of Hughes High students arrived at the Downtown Board of Elections offices at 1 p.m. Wednesday, supervised by a school employee. School lets out at 3:15 p.m. When they got out of the vans, the students, the suit alleges, also were accompanied by adults who appeared to be campaign workers or supporters for U.S. Rep. Steve Driehaus, D-West Price Hill, the congressman being challenged this fall by Steve Chabot. When the students got out of the vans, the suit alleges they were given sample ballots containing only Democratic candidates. “We want these kids to vote,” Finney said. “I’m not sure them being bussed during the school day is a good thing, but that’s not the thrust of the suit. “If they had fair sample ballots or no sample ballots it would be different.” Driehaus will likely lose unless they can gin up enough vote fraud to overcome Chabot’s lead. Oh, and after voting like good Democrats the kids were given ice cream. I think that’s basically the same thing they give the winos when they pick them up off the street and drive them to the polls.

Dick Cheney Ushered in Era of GOP Climate Denial: NY Times

Photo: Creative Commons, Karen Ballard , Wikipedia Former Vice President Dick Cheney may have been more responsible for the near-decade of climate inaction that the Bush administration oversaw than anyone else. It was he who hewed closest to the climate denial script a decade ago, and perfected the art of insistently calling into question peer-reviewed, consensus-backed science as an ironclad excuse for inaction. In an op-ed, the New York Times links Cheney’s denial strategies to… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Barnes & Noble holding a ‘very special event’ next week

Can you believe it’s almost been a year since the Nook was announced ? The reader was first shown to the public on October 20th last year, and started shipping to the public in limited quantities in December. We don’t know if Barnes & Noble is planning a follow-up just yet, but this mysterious invite we just got in the ol’ email inbox might hint at such an occasion. Last year’s event in NY was at a much larger venue, while this year B&N is hoping to cram people into its Union Square store in the area it typically hosts authors for book readings — that could be a hint at something less impressive, or maybe they just wanted to cut costs. Maybe Chairman Leonard Riggio is going to read a book to us! Hopefully it’s a little more exciting than that, and we’ll be sure to tell you all about it either way.
