The RaceAbout Electric Car in Action (Made in Finland by Students!)

Image: Youtube capture from Automotive X-Prize video A few months ago, I wrote about the RaceAbout electric car and the team of students that made it to compete in the Automotive X-Prize (follow the link for more details about the competition and the winners). But while there were many photos and tech specs, what was missing was a good video. That problem has been solved by the X-Prize foundation which released a short video about the RaceAbout. It has interviews an… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Palin’s ‘Can’t Party Like It’s 1773′ Line Mocked By History Challenged Ifill and Kos

Sarah Palin at Monday's Tea Party rally in Reno, Nevada, told attendees, “Don't be thinking that we've got victory for America in the bag yet…We can't party like it's 1773.” Clearly not understanding that was the year of the famed Boston Tea Party, history challenged media members, including PBS's Gwen Ifill and Daily Kos's Markos Moulitsas , mocked Palin via their twitter accounts (screencaps follow with video of Palin's remarks courtesy Right Scoop , h/t Perfunction ): read more

New Study Says Young People Want Apartments, Not Houses; iPhones, Not Cars

It is a theme on TreeHugger that living walkable communities and dense cities use less energy per capita, and that the auto-centric suburb is perhaps the worst of all planning models if we want to reduce our energy and particularly our oil consumption. But do people really want to live in high density apartments if they have the choice? A new Canadian study indicates that for a number of reasons, more and more people do. The study by GWL Realty Advisors comes to some interesting conclusions about how trends are changing regarding home ownership vs r… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Mophie Juice Packs for iPhone 4, iPad en route to Apple Store

We have some details for you on Mophie’s upcoming Juice Pack Universal line . Ready? Okay: available at the Apple Store sometime this month (and at Mophie’s website now), all the new models, including Air ($80), Boost ($60), Reserve ($40) and Powerstation ($100), are compatible with all iPhone and iPod touch form factors, while the latter also throws iPad compatibility into the mix. Additionally, Reserve and Boost feature one amp of power, (which, as the company points out, means they’ll charge your device twice as fast as your standard 500 mAh charger), while Power Station boasts 2.1 amps. Not bad, eh? PR after the break. Poll Shows 2/3 of US and UK Citizens Won’t Pay More for Electric Cars

Photo: Michael Graham Richard But People Always Say That… Ask people if they want to pay more for something – especially something they are not entirely familiar with – and chances are that the default answer will be “no”. That’s quite expected. So when Nielsen asked citizens of the U.S. and of the U.K. if they would consider buying an electric car (yes!) and how much extra they were ready to pay (nothing!), the results weren’t very surprising…. Power mad modder rips the keys out of his Epic 4G, calls it a gamepad (video)

Sometimes a mod is more than just a mod: it’s a manifesto. When Phawx over at BrainLazy decided to take an X-Acto knife to his Epic 4G’s keypad, he knew what he was doing: both challenging Apple’s place in the world of cellphone-based gaming and encouraging other manufacturers to step up to the plate. Although early on in the design process he mocked up some plastic controller pieces to replace the factory keypad altogether, by the time it came to try the thing out he realized that by simply pulling out the unused keys and making a few minor (very minor) cosmetic adjustments he could give his touchscreen handset a gamepad slider more eminently more playable than your Droid’s Game Gripper — and eminently less mythical than your PSP Phone . Video after the break. Raw Video: Comedy, Jabs at NY Race Debate

Tuesday night’s debate between the seven candidates running to be New York’s next governor is being widely panned as political theater with little substance. The debate was loaded with comic relief and audacious zingers. (Oct. 19)

Windows Embedded Automotive hits version 7, powers Nissan Leaf, takes MyFord global

We know how patiently you’ve been waiting for this day, but it’s here. It’s really here. Microsoft Windows Embedded Automotive 7 is out, appearing in the download queues of “select car makers and suppliers in the automotive industry.” What does it offer? Why, Silverlight support for fancier UIs, real-time text-to-speech technology, and better expandability for third-party plugins. In bigger news, Microsoft is confirming that it is the brains behind the Nissan Leaf ‘s Information Hub, which not only handles infotainment duties but also gives charging status and power consumption figures. Finally, the MyFord system is going global, shipping to Blue Oval vehicles in Europe and Asia in 2011. That’s after 2.5 million Sync -equipped cars have hit the road. Highway domination? Nearly complete.
