Apple’s new AirPlay video streaming functionality is great… unless you want to use it in a non-Apple app. For whatever reason, Apple is restricting AirPlay video to just its first party apps right now, and not even all of those (Safari is left out, for instance). Interestingly, Apple actually built the functionality in, it’s just not enabled. Thanks to some “spelunking” work by TUAW’s Erica Sadun, it was discovered that a single line of code is all that’s necessary to spread the feature to any app that relies on Apple’s MediaPlayer framework, including VLC, AirVideo, and even Safari. Now Zone-MR has built a hack called AirVideoEnabler and put it on Cydia, allowing you to bring this functionality to your own jailbroken iPad. For the hack-averse, let’s hope Apple catches up in functionality soon. Check out a video of AirVideoEnabler and Erica’s original hack in action after the break. Continue reading …Click here to view this media I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving and that you didn’t have to spend any time arguing with your right-wing relatives about this nonsense. Right Wing Continues to Push “Socialist Pilgrims” Myth : Despite a comprehensive repudiation by historians of the belief that the original Pilgrims were socialists who only began to succeed and prosper once they turned to capitalism, on this Thanksgiving conservative leaders and writers continue to spread the urban legend that the settlers were almost doomed by their socialist-ways. Some background: according to real historians , the Pilgrims held their land in common “in the interest of realizing a profit sooner, and was only intended for the short term; historians say the Pilgrims were more like shareholders in an early corporation than subjects of socialism.” But the settlers, who came from different part of England, “spoke different dialects and had different methods of farming, and looked upon each other with great wariness.” Because of such difficulties, the colony scrapped the land arrangements in 1623, yet the colony held the first Thanksgiving in 1621 and the original “arrangement did not produce famine.” But that hasn’t stopped the Right from propagating the myth that the failures of “socialism” forced them to embrace capitalism. In order to make the myth seem true, Fox News commentator John Stossel simply moves the date of the first Thanksgiving from 1621 to 1623. And Rep. Todd Akin continued to embarrass the state of Missouri with some similar nonsense as well. Rep. Todd Akin: The Pilgrims Came To America To Flee ‘Unbiblical’ Socialism In The 1620′s : Today, millions of Americans celebrate Thanksgiving with their families. To mark this holiday, Rep. Todd Akin (R-MO) took to the floor of the House of Representatives on Tuesday to explain its history. At one point, he opined, “It might be helpful to think back and say there’s more to Thanksgiving than the Pilgrims.” He explained that they were “a group of people who were willing to change the system, to think of different ideas.” Akin continued, “They came here with the idea that after trying socialism that it wasn’t going to work. They realized that it was unbiblical, that it was a form of theft, so they pitched socialism out. They learned that in the 1620s”: AKIN: It might be helpful to think back and say, there’s more to Thanksgiving than the Pilgrims. They were a group of people who were willing to change the system, to think of different ideas. They came here and separated civil and church governments. They came here and created the model of a written constitution, the idea that the government should be the servant of the people. […] They came here with the idea that after trying socialism that it wasn’t going to work. They realized that it was unbiblical, that it was a form of theft, so they pitched socialism out. They learned that in the early 1620’s. And as TPM noted, the teabaggers and Glenn Beck have been getting in on the act as well. Happy Thanksgiving! Right Jabs Pilgrims For … Communism? (VIDEO) : It’s reasonable to assume that tea partiers, Fox News hosts and conservative bloggers look forward to today for the same reason most Americans do: the turkey (or tofurkey , depending on your preference) and the football (or cable TV marathons , depending on your preference.) But those folks also look forward to Thanksgiving for another reason that it’s equally reasonable to imagine most Americans don’t : the celebration of capitalism’s final victory over communist-leaning Pilgrims. “Sadly, few Americans know the real story of the early colonists,” FreedomWorks’ Julie Borowski wrote yesterday. “For evidence of the failures of communism, we do not need to look to disastrous experiments in foreign lands. In fact, the Plymouth Plantation is one of the most apparent examples of the failures of collectivism.” As the New York Times reported last week, the story is part of Rush Limbaugh’s yearly Thanksgiving broadcast, and it’s part of the course load at Glenn Beck’s online university . And last but not least Steve Benen did a nice write up on Akin’s hackery as well — J ust in Time for Thanksgiving .

Weighing in at just 27 pounds, the robot can apparently carry a person weighing up to 175 pounds (providing they have good balance), or it can simply amble around on its twelve legs all by itself. Practical? Maybe not. But it is quite a sight to behold — see for yourself after the break. Its screen looks to be the same 4-inch affair as on Nokia’s E7 , it’s running the latest Symbian OS (formerly known as Symbian^3), and pictures of its rear reveal an 8 megapixel camera. The last detail of import, naturally, is the reassurance that comes from knowing that this supposed X7 can crunch through Need for Speed quite nicely. Jump past the break to see it on video. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] Update: The video’s been thrown into private mode pretty quickly. Let us know if you find any copies of it floating about the interwebs. Continue reading …How’s this for post-purchase pleasantries? Super Talent has just revealed a new firmware update for the world’s first USB 3.0 thumb drive (that would be the RAIDDrive ), and it’s one that takes full advantage of second generation USB 3.0 controller technology. The end result? An extra 55MB/sec on the benchmarking front, pushing its proven maximum speed to 370MB/sec. Head on past the break and mash play if you don’t believe us, and feel free to start pressing your own storage boutique of choice for something similar for all those other SuperSpeed products. Continue reading …NTT DoCoMo recently launched the Samsung Galaxy S in the Japanese market and now we’ve come to discover that it’s chosen a very forceful personality to represent the product to its discerning audience. Darth ” roundabound ” Vader has been starring in the carrier’s latest round of “always with you” ads, wherein he serves as a (sort of) human representation of the phone, thus lending some anthropomorphic qualities to the cold slab of technology awaiting you in the shops. This whole outlandish idea really shouldn’t work, but somehow it does — we want a little Vader in our lives too now. Video after the break. Continue reading …How much fun can you really have with an 8×8 pixel array? Quite a lot, as evidenced by this here arcade project. One Bomber Punk has managed to created a full-on arcade enclosure for a Meggy Jr. game console , and he even took the time to swap in coin-op buttons and a joystick for control. The whole thing took around a month to build (part-time, of course), and considering that he has managed to load up an absurdly pixelated version of Donkey Kong, we’d say it was definitely worthwhile. Head on past the break for a visual explanation. Continue reading …It may just be an elaborate stunt to promote batteries, but it’s hard not to get a little caught up in Evolta’s 500-kilometer trek from Tokyo to Kyoto, which finally came to an end this week after two months on the road — ahead of schedule, no less. Aided by a team of “Evolta Sisters,” the pint-sized robot hauled a dozen AA Evolta batteries in a cart the whole way, and guided itself by following an infrared signal from a device pushed in front of it — a few other ground rules also allowed it to be carried up stairs, and the bot didn’t walk at night or in the rain. Even still, 500 kilometers is 500 kilometers (or 317 miles, if you prefer), and that’s a long way for any robot to walk. Head on past the break for a video recounting some of the journey.
