The kabuki debt ceiling jig started back up yesterday when Boehner says he never left the dance . On CNN State of the Union, Geithner said he sees two paths to raising the debt ceiling, the Obama-Boehner “grand bargain,” or the “last ditch” McConnell-Reid proposal. He added that “both sides are getting a lot closer on … the tough choices,” particularly their commitment to preventing default. They still have time to walk out of meetings and blame each other for this folly until the vote to raise the debt ceiling is finally done. Even if it’s been evident that Boehner needs Democratic votes in the HOUSE to pass, Timothy admitted it to Crowley on CNN today. rough transcript : Geithner: It’s been clear for sometime that to get legislation passed, to avert a default credit rating and to solve our fiscal problems this is going to require democrats as well as republicans. I’ll tell you I had a conversation with republican leadership after the midterm elections..They said, we’re going to need democrats with this debt ceiling thing cause it’s going to be very hard for us. They knew from the beginning they’d need democrats to pass the House….and to pass the Senate. The Tea Party caucus in the HOUSE needs a lot of cover to vote no on any plan that raises the debt ceiling, but how much crow is Pelosi’s crew going to eat over this? We can only hope a Grand Bargain that cuts into our social safety nets is not going to happen and we’ll have to wait for the info to come out as this dance plays out. Krugman writes: What Obama Was Willing to Give Away Jonathan Cohn summarizes what seems to have been in the deal that Boehner walked away from; it’s horrifying. Above all, the proposed rise in the age of Medicare eligibility was a real betrayal of both Democratic principles and good government.. read on Geithner was very tight lipped about what was being actually discussed in this new/old big deal, but the kabuki continues. Getting up a 5:30 am with coffee not ready yet is not conducive to clear thinking–especially on the topic of the debt ceiling.

Politico’s Allen: Tax-Hiking ‘Grand Bargain’ Would Be Laudable ‘Historic Achievement’

One more data point demonstrating the leftward tilt of the purportedly non-partisan Politico: In his Playbook of today, Politico's chief White House correspondent Mike Allen depicts a “grand bargain” on the credit ceiling, which inevitably would include huge tax increases, as an “historic achievement” for which President Obama and House speaker John Boehner would “rightly get credit.” In contrast, Allen suggests that Republican leaders Eric Cantor and Kevin McCarthy are refusing a grand bargain out of personal political ambition. Network Poll Coverage Ignores Public Opposition to Debt Ceiling Raise

NBC and CBS polls released earlier this week determined that a significant portion of the American public remain opposed to any increase in the nation’s debt limit, but neither network has included that fact in their on-air reporting. And a poll released by ABC on Tuesday didn’t even bother to ask for public opinion on whether the raising the debt ceiling was a good idea or not. The networks’ selective coverage of their own polls corresponds with CNN on-air hosts scandalously ignoring the fact that their polling found 66% of Americans supported the House GOP's 'Cut, Cap and Balance' plan and that 74% would support a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution. An NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll found that despite warnings of supposedly dire consequences if the debt ceiling was not raised, 31% of Americans were against the increase. After providing a brief explanation of both sides of the argument, that number went up to 43%. The CBS News poll found an even higher 49% of Americans thought Congress should not raise the debt ceiling. The closest ABC News came to actually asking the question was to simply wonder who Americans would blame for the assumed disaster that would befall the country if the debt ceiling was not raised.

John Boehner walks out of White House debt-ceiling talks. What now?

An exasperated President Obama virtually declared war on House Republicans in an angry and hastily called press conference Friday night, excoriating them for walking away from a deal to cut the deficit and raise the debt ceiling, saying the Republicans can't say “yes” to anything. Shortly after, House Speaker John Boehner called his own press conference to say that negotiating with the White House was like “dealing with Jell-O,” and suggesting he intends essentially to cut the president out of negotiations going forward. It was an extraordinary two hours in Washington, in which many of the pent-up frustrations over the failure to clinch a deal on raising the debt ceiling…
