Fifa to investigate World Cup 2018 ‘votes for sale’ allegations

Fifa confirmed last night it will investigate allegations that two members of its committee have offered to sell their votes in the bid to stage the 2018 World Cup. The race to host the tournament became clouded in controversy after the Sunday Times reported that Amos Adamu, a Fifa executive committee member from Nigeria, was filmed negotiating a deal with an undercover reporter where he would be paid £500,000 for his vote. Adamu requested the money, which would be used to build four artificial football pitches in Nigeria, would be paid to him personally. The deal was allegedly finalised last month in Cairo when Adamu confirmed he would vote for the USA to host the 2018 World Cup. The USA…

Peek experiences permanent outage for older devices, vows to replace with free Peek 9

Thinking of upgrading your Peek or Peek Pronto to a shiny new Peek 9 ? You may no longer have a choice — following an epic fail when migrating to a new network provider, loads of older devices were reportedly fried. Normally consumer outrage would run rampant at this news, but Peek CEO Amol Sarva has a plan — he’s offering brand-new Peek 9s to existing customers, free of charge. It’s not clear what will happen to the older units at this point, but a Peek customer service rep says that while fried QWERTY candybars are no more, the unscathed Peeks might possibly be turned back on. “We are currently waiting on T-Mobile to decide our fate,” the rep wrote, “There is still a CHANCE that the sky is not falling and older devices will continue to work.” In the meantime, Sarva has a rather difficult instruction for affected customers looking to get in on the deal: “Just check your email.” [Thanks, standingup] Peek experiences permanent outage for older devices, vows to replace with free Peek 9 originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 16 Oct 2010 21:54:00 EDT. Only the New York Times could burn through 2,500 words about Japan's economy and not use the word “stimulus.” The Old Gray Lady's Martin Fackler did refer to Fed Chair Ben Bernanke's just-announced second attempt to “stimulate” economy, but dodged the central lession: The government created the Japanese people's malaise, and our government, despite Japan's experience, seems determined to do the same to us. The Times item is the first in a series, so I suppose Fackler may get around to it in subsequent reports, but it doesn't seem likely. Here are some paragraphs from Fackler's report that show how intent he and the Times were on not getting to the real root causes of Japan's nearly two-decade malaise (bolds are mine): read more
