enlarge Note: I’m experimenting with a new (hopefully) daily feature that attempts to recap the day’s economic news in a way that’s informative and entertaining. There’s a lot of insane stuff going on in the world of economics and finance and my goal will be to explain it without making your eyes glaze over. So let’s get started! C&L Opening Bell, 11-23-10 The big news of the day was in Ireland, where the Irish government finally acknowledged that bailing out its banks has rendered it insolvent. Taoiseach Brian Cowen said that he plans to dissolve Parliament and call for new elections juuuuuust after the sure-to-have-its-ass-handed-to-it Fianna Fáil coalition passes its next budget. And what a budget it’s expected to be! In exchange for a loan of up to €90 billion from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund, Ireland will have to implement further austerity measures that involve raising taxes and cutting services. And whose services are getting cut, you’re wondering? Do you even have to ask ? Deep cuts to the minimum wage and welfare benefits loom as part of the price the country pays for its huge emergency bailout loan as Brian Cowen insisted he was “not the bogeyman” who had led Ireland to financial crisis. So the poorest people in the country are essentially paying to bail out the Irish banks’ creditors. Pretty remarkable. Zero Hedge points us to the following video from Jim Rogers that lays out an alternative plan for the Irish: Just declare bankruptcy and restructure your debt already: Here’s the key part: This is ludicrous. This will cripple the Irish economy for years to come. In the future Ireland will be crippled because everything they earn will go to pay off old debt. There is no reason why taxpayers around Europe or in Ireland should pay for other people’s mistakes. The bondholders and the stockholders of banks should lose money. And this is what we should keep in mind when we hear about “bailing out Ireland.” It’s really about bailing out the Irish banks’ creditors . It also goes without saying that this situation blows a hole in the meme that austerity is the best way to head off a recession. The Irish implemented spending cuts and tax increases long before most of the other PIIGS (Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece and Spain) ever did. The result was the country was still deeply in debt and in need of a rescue. More than anything, though, this crisis shows that there are structural flaws in the Eurozone single currency that are probably impossible to resolve. I can’t really see anyway for countries to be able to issue their own debts but not their own currencies. Over in the States, meanwhile, things aren’t exactly better. The banks’ fraudulent foreclosure activity (which our own Susie Madrak has covered extensively ) has created a buttload of anxiety in the housing market : The ongoing controversy surrounding foreclosures is taking its toll as homebuyers refused to look at distressed properties in October, and foreclosure sales suffered from delays, according to the latest Campbell/Inside Mortgage Finance Monthly Survey. News reports that major servicers were pulling REOs off the market, including some already under contract, spooked would-be homebuyers. The monthly survey found that 14% of owner-occupant homebuyers and 6% of investors refused to view foreclosed properties in October. Homebuyer fear was worse for short-sale properties where 30% of owner-occupant buyers, and 20% of investors refused to view these homes. As I told two friends who were looking to buy a home, you’d have to be N-U-T-S to think of buying a foreclosed home right now. On the somewhat-happier side of things, the FBI raided two hedge firms yesterday as part of its sweeping investigation into insider trading. The Wall Street Journal got the scoop on this probe over the weekend: Federal authorities, capping a three-year investigation, are preparing insider-trading charges that could ensnare consultants, investment bankers, hedge-fund and mutual-fund traders, and analysts across the nation, according to people familiar with the matter. The criminal and civil probes, which authorities say could eclipse the impact on the financial industry of any previous such investigation, are examining whether multiple insider-trading rings reaped illegal profits totaling tens of millions of dollars, the people say. Some charges could be brought before year-end, they say. The investigations, if they bear fruit, have the potential to expose a culture of pervasive insider trading in U.S. financial markets, including new ways non-public information is passed to traders through experts tied to specific industries or companies, federal authorities say. Reading those words gave me a tingly feeling in my pants. I do hope this investigation is legit and that the government won’t just take a wad of “We’re Sorry!” Cash from the banks and call it a day. We have a wealthy criminal class in this country that never pays for its crimes and is often rewarded for them at taxpayer expense. If we want to keep living in a democracy, this sort of thing will have to stop. News of the hedge fund raid sent key financial stocks down today, as Bank of America’s shares were down 3%, JP Morgan’s were down 2.25% and the Vampire Squid was down nearly 3.5%. And finally, let’s take a look at what I call the “WE’RE ALL GONNA DIE!!!11!!!” index of key measurements to see how much investors across the world are crapping themselves with fear. Basically, it goes like this: When U.S. Treasury yields go down and the price of gold goes up, that means investors are fleeing risky assets for things they consider to be safe investments. If the reverse is happening, then investors are likely feeling they can handle more risk on a given day. Gold futures rose 0.4% to $1,357.80 yesterday. 10-year Treasury yields fell 1.41% to close at 2.80% on the day. In other words, the chances of the world exploding just got greater. Have a happy day!

New York’s JFK airport is now home to 200 iPad tablets, all of which are located within Delta’s terminal. They’re being installed in cooperation with OTG Management, mostly in eateries — “Croque Madame, a French restaurant at Gates 21 and 22 in Terminal 2; and Bar Brace, a casual Italian restaurant at Gate 15 in Terminal 3.” As you’d expect, customers can order food from the iPad in order to have it delivered directly to them. It lacks that certain Sonic Drive-In appeal, but the ability to also use the iPad to check your email, have a look at the latest sports scores and attempt to jailbreak it for the next patron more than compensates. OTG doesn’t plan to put a time limit on the usage here (you’ll still need to make your connecting flight, remember?), and its hoping to engage in a similar installation over at LaGuardia in due time. No word on whether these things will censor any and all Google searches on “uncomfortable TSA pat-downs,” though. Continue reading …Despite the fact that we’re being urged by the Europeans and the Russians to ratify the the START treaty, Republicans have decided that it’s a good idea to play politics rather than to allow President Obama look like he’s been successful at doing anything. This is a sad and sorry example of the type of obstruction we’re going to get to look forward to for the next two years with Republicans gaining back control of the House and making gains in the Senate. When even Dick Lugar has finally had enough of this nonsense and is speaking out about it there might be some hope to see something done during the lame duck session on this. Europeans, Russia Urge US Senate to Ratify START Treaty : Europeans urged early ratification of a new nuclear defense treaty between the United States and Russia during a NATO summit in Lisbon amid announcements that Moscow would begin working with NATO on missile defense. After receiving strong support from NATO partners for the START treaty, along with endorsement from top military figures and former administration officials, President Barack Obama told reporters in Lisbon there was no good reason why the U.S. Senate should not now ratify the treaty. “And my hope is we will do so. There’s no other reason not to do it other than the fact that Washington has become a very partisan place and this is a classic area where we have to rise above partisanship,” he said. Republican senators have been reluctant to endorse the deal, with a key Republican lawmaker saying they needed more time. But a number of European countries, along with Russia, say it is critical the treaty is ratified in a timely manner. NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen warned that European security was at stake. President Obama called out the Republicans for their obstruction to the START treaty during this week’s Weekly Address . WASHINGTON – In this week’s address, President Obama called ratifying New START this year “fundamental” to America’s national security. Failure to ratify the treaty this year not only would mean losing our nuclear inspectors in Russia, but also it would undermine the international coalition pressuring Iran, put to risk the transit routes used to equip our troops in Afghanistan, and undo decades of American leadership and bipartisanship on nuclear security. After six months, 18 hearings, and nearly one thousand questions answered and with the support of several Republicans including Colin Powell, George Schultz, Jim Baker, and Henry Kissinger, it is time for the Senate to act. Today, I’d like to speak with you about an issue that is fundamental to America’s national security: the need for the Senate to approve the New START Treaty this year. This Treaty is rooted in a practice that dates back to Ronald Reagan. The idea is simple – as the two nations with over 90 percent of the world’s nuclear weapons, the United States and Russia have a responsibility to work together to reduce our arsenals. And to ensure that our national security is protected, the United States has an interest in tracking Russia’s nuclear arsenal through a verification effort that puts U.S. inspectors on the ground. As President Reagan said when he signed a nuclear arms treaty with the Soviet Union in 1987, “Trust, but verify.” That is precisely what the New START Treaty does. After nearly a full year of negotiations, we completed an agreement earlier this year that cuts by a third the number of long-range nuclear weapons and delivery vehicles that the United States and Russia can deploy, while ensuring that America retains a strong nuclear deterrent, and can put inspectors back on the ground in Russia. The Treaty also helped us reset our relations with Russia, which led to concrete benefits. For instance, Russia has been indispensable to our efforts to enforce strong sanctions on Iran, to secure loose nuclear material from terrorists, and to equip our troops in Afghanistan. All of this will be put to risk if the Senate does not pass the New START Treaty. Without ratification this year, the United States will have no inspectors on the ground, and no ability to verify Russian nuclear activities. So those who would block this treaty are breaking President Reagan’s rule – they want to trust, but not verify. Without ratification, we put at risk the coalition that we have built to put pressure on Iran, and the transit route through Russia that we use to equip our troops in Afghanistan. And without ratification, we risk undoing decades of American leadership on nuclear security, and decades of bipartisanship on this issue. Our security and our position in the world are at stake. Indeed, since the Reagan years, every President has pursued a negotiated, verified, arms reduction treaty. And every time that these treaties have been reviewed by the Senate, they have passed with over 85 votes. Bipartisan support for New START could not be stronger. It has been endorsed by Republicans from the Reagan Administration and both Bush Administrations – including Colin Powell, George Shultz, Jim Baker, and Henry Kissinger. And it was approved by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee by a strong bipartisan vote of 14-4. Over the last several months, several questions have been asked about New START, and we have answered every single one. Some have asked whether it will limit our missile defense – it will not. Some, including Senator Jon Kyl, have asked that we modernize our nuclear infrastructure for the 21st century – we are doing so, and plan to invest at least $85 billion in that effort over the next ten years – a significant increase from the Bush Administration. Finally, some make no argument against the Treaty – they just ask for more time. But remember this: it has already been 11 months since we’ve had inspectors in Russia, and every day that goes by without ratification is a day that we lose confidence in our understanding of Russia’s nuclear weapons. If the Senate doesn’t act this year – after six months, 18 hearings, and nearly a thousand questions answered – it would have to start over from scratch in January. The choice is clear: a failure to ratify New START would be a dangerous gamble with America’s national security, setting back our understanding of Russia’s nuclear weapons, as well as our leadership in the world. That is not what the American people sent us to Washington to do. There is enough gridlock, enough bickering. If there is one issue that should unite us – as Republicans and Democrats – it should be our national security. Some things are bigger than politics. As Republican Dick Lugar said the other day, “Every Senator has an obligation in the national security interest to take a stand, to do his or her duty.” Senator Lugar is right. And if the Senate passes this treaty, it will not be an achievement for Democrats or Republicans – it will be a win for America. Thanks.
Continue reading …Isn’t it funny how Republicans respond to perceived threats to free-speech rights … by engaging in government interference in a broadcast network’s free-speech rights? Let me just say that this actually has nothing to do with the First Amendment, but don’t you always hear some Breitbart-like hack bring up the First Amendment whenever they get into hot water over something vile they said or did? The GOP knows one thing and one thing all too well. They will go to any length to silence anything they consider to the “left” of Jerry Falwell. Their latest escapade was their attempt to defund monies that would go to NPR. Their latest excuse is because Juan Williams was fired. It wasn’t that they called conservatives traitors or terrorists or, Heavens to Betsy, the American Taliban. Nope, it’s that poor, poor Juan Williams finally got the well deserved ‘sack.” House Democrats on Thursday shot down a G.O.P. attempt to roll back federal funding to NPR, a move that many Republicans have called for since the public radio network fired the analyst Juan Williams last month. Republicans in the House tried to advance the defunding measure as part of their “YouCut” initiative, which allows the public to vote on which spending cuts the G.O.P. should pursue. But their push was blocked, 239 to 171 , with only three Democrats voting with a united bloc of Republicans. Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, the No. 2 House Republican who is set to become majority leader in the next Congress, said the vote showed Democrats had failed to learn the lessons of this month’s midterm elections. “Today’s vote was just the latest common sense YouCut to cut spending and save taxpayer dollars, and again Democrats showed that they just don’t get it,” Mr. Cantor said in a statement. For his part, Representative Earl Blumenauer , Democrat of Oregon, who formed the Congressional Public Broadcasting Caucus , called the Republican effort cynical and politically motivated. “I urge members of both parties to focus our efforts on the urgent priorities facing this Congress and stop playing political games with public radio stations,” Mr. Blumenauer said in a statement. NPR released its own statement following the action in the House on Thursday, calling the defunding push unwarranted and saying good judgment had won the day. “In an increasingly fractious media environment, public radio’s value in fostering an informed society has never been more critical. Our growing audience shows that we are meeting that need,” the statement said. “It is imperative for federal funding to continue to ensure that this essential tool of democracy remains available to all Americans and thrives well into the future.” House Republicans made no secret that the ouster of Mr. Williams was a major reason for their efforts. Representative Doug Lamborn of Colorado said Wednesday in a statement that the firing “was a wake-up call for many Americans to political correctness and liberal bias at NPR.” “However,” he added, “it is not so much the liberal bias that offends me, but the fact that our tax dollars are funding it.” When Obama took the White House, movement conservatives quickly cried incessantly that Nancy Pelosi would bring back the “Fairness Doctrine” to whip up their base. Here’s a topic from the Freepers that made the rounds. If Obama Wins A ‘Fairness Doctrine’ Will Pass – Are Conservatives Ready To Lose Their Media Access? Once the Republicans take over the House they will not stop trying to destroy NPR as the move forward. be sure of it. Salon has more on another “Nazi” in our midst: Rupert Murdoch, Fox’s owner, has waged war against public broadcasting in every nation where he has a media presence. (His father, Sir Keith Murdoch, began the campaign by complaining that Australian Broadcasting Corp. — their BBC — would be “improper competition” to his newspapers.) His newspapers and his son are currently battling the BBC. But public broadcasting tends to be popular, so whipping up popular hysteria takes some work — especially in the U.S., where it’s barely public, and it’s so … completely harmless. Meanwhile, the head of Fox News revealed this week that he’s lost his mind and believes all his network’s bullshit, in a series of interviews with Howard Kurtz. Roger Ailes said a lot of wonderful things, but this line really hammers home how much this incredibly rich and powerful and successful man hates the very existence of a very popular media outlet not built on rage and resentment: Then he turned his sights on NPR executives. “They are, of course, Nazis. They have a kind of Nazi attitude. They are the left wing of Nazism. These guys don’t want any other point of view. They don’t even feel guilty using tax dollars to spout their propaganda. They are basically Air America with government funding to keep them alive.” Yeah, when I hear Robert Siegel, all I can think is “this guy has a Nazi attitude.” Many people can’t stand to listen to anything else but NPR because they feel it has the most reliable coverage of the news. The right wing cannot have that. They need to flood the market with only their opinions.

It’s too bad that the panel and Bash didn’t bother to point out the fact that this edit by PBS of Fey’s remarks shouldn’t be all that surprising to anyone paying attention since the network took a turn to the right some years ago. That said, I don’t expect anything better from anyone on CNN. Introspection as to how our media is not serving their basic purpose as the fourth estate in America isn’t exactly their strong point to put it lightly. Since sadly Bill Moyers left the air at PBS… again… I’m not sure why anyone would perceive that network to be “too liberal” other than from listening to the Villager’s on their television sets telling them that it is day in and day out. If anyone thinks that The McLaughlin Group or the PBS Newshour or Charlie Rose are liberal, they’re not watching those shows. I consider Frontline to be fairly neutral in their reporting and that’s about the extent of what I might watch on that network on any kind of a regular basis. They’ve got Tavis Smiley on there on a nightly basis but his show sure as hell doesn’t make up for the shows that lean to the right or the loss of Bill Moyers. He just gave right wing hack Dennis Miller a sad and sorry softball interview on the same night this panel segment aired. Here’s what got ignored during this segment where they made light of the editing of Tina Fey’s remarks. PBS Panders to Right With New Programming : A new public television program called the Journal Editorial Report, featuring writers and editors from the arch-conservative Wall Street Journal editorial page, will debut tonight on public television stations around the country. The show joins Tucker Carlson: Unfiltered, hosted by conservative CNN pundit Tucker Carlson, and a planned program featuring conservative commentator Michael Medved as part of what many see as politically motivated decisions to bring more right-wing voices to public television. According to reports in the public broadcasting newspaper Current (1/19/04, 6/7/04) and in the New Yorker (6/7/04), conservative complaints about the alleged liberal bias of the program Now With Bill Moyers contributed to the momentum to “balance” the PBS lineup. The new programs seem to be the result of that pressure. In fact, Now will soon see its role on public television diminish, as the program is cut from one hour to 30 minutes when Moyers voluntarily leaves the program later this year. He will be replaced by co-anchor David Brancaccio, formerly of the public radio business show Marketplace, who expresses no obvious ideology. If Carlson, Medved and the staff of the Wall Street Journal editorial page are all necessary to balance the liberal Moyers, by 2005 there will be no one on PBS to balance them. Read on… And there’s this. PBS Stolen by Right Wing in Cunning Bait and Switch : What can we do about the hostile takeover of the Public Broadcasting System and National Public Radio by the right wing? That they have taken over is beyond dispute. Ken Tomlinson is chairman of the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and he has succeeded in placing former Republican National Committee co-chairwoman and fellow neocon Patricia Harrison into the position of president and CEO of CPB. While we were focused on draconian budget cuts proposed by a House committee, Tomlinson and Harrison were doing their inside magic. Literally millions of Americans sent e-mails to Congress demanding that the 25 percent cut in funding be restored. And, voila! The money was restored almost without debate. Self-congratulatory e-mails flooded our computer screens. Eager to prove the political power of the Internet, many groups took credit for restoring the funding. In retrospect, the back-pats were premature. The battle was too easy, the results unsatisfactory. It was a set-up. As Frank Rich of the New York Times put it, Tomlinson, Bush and Harrison “castrated” public television and NPR. We are now faced with a CPB that will mimic Fox news with its “fair and balanced” theme. What does that mean? We got our first hint last week. The leading advocate of the Iraqi invasion, Richard Perle, will be featured on the “new” and “balanced” PBS in a made-for-television movie produced by a good friend of Perle, Brian Lapping. Lapping said that Perle is correct that “quite a lot of the preconceptions about neocons are just wrong.” And, as he explained in the New York Times, the Perle film will be “mostly a journey, through his life and experiences.” It will show Perle, who called journalist Sy Hersh a “terrorist,” interacting with his critics who, get this, “say he was overly optimistic about American prospects in Iraq.” Full transcript via CNN . KING: Let’s pivot here to show that everybody in life needs an editor and sometimes everybody in life gets an editor. We played this for you the other night. This is Tina Fey accepting a Mark Twain award. Listen. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) TINA FEY, COMEDIAN: I would be a liar and an idiot if I didn’t thank Sarah Palin for helping get me here tonight. My partial resemblance and her crazy voice are the two luckiest things that have ever happened to me. (LAUGHTER) FEY: All kidding aside, I’m so proud to represent American’s humor — (END VIDEO CLIP) KING: That’s Tina Fey. She’s always funny. Now what we learned since then though is that PBS decided they say for time reasons to edit this part out. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) FEY: For everybody else, it’s a win-win unless you’re a gay woman who wants to marry your partner of 20 years. But for most women, the success of conservative women is good for all of us unless, you believe in evolution. You know what, I take it back. The whole thing’s a disaster. (END VIDEO CLIP) KING: Now Ed Rollins, she’s funny, she’s also political. Do you take it that this was edited out because they needed to get to a certain time for the program? We face those demands every day or when they had to get to a certain time, were they political in the editing? ROLLINS: They politically edit it. There’s no question about it. PBS does that from time to time and you know whatever. At the end of the day I think Tina Fey will be very happy to have Sarah Palin’s Alaska ratings, which will be her own show and I think to a certain extent they sort of made each other, and I think to a certain extent I’m happy to see her get the Mark Twain award. I’m a big fan of Tina Fey. BASH: Is this the first time that PBS has been accused of editing — (CROSSTALK) BASH: — to favor Republicans? I mean that’s my question right. I mean are — they’re accused — PBS is the network that’s accused of being too liberal — BORGER: They edited out something Paul McCartney said that was offensive at one point to Republicans, so probably not. (CROSSTALK) KING: Go ahead, Roland. MARTIN: Hey John — John, this is a perfect example of what Tina Fey said and they edited out was the funniest stuff that she said. So when people ask all the time why PBS is boring, hello. Exhibit A. ROLLINS: I thought it was a master plan. They wanted to be boring so they could talk to all the liberal Democrats. (CROSSTALK) UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: They want you as a viewer. KING: Here’s — here’s a question I have — MARTIN: Even my liberal conservative friends don’t like boring, Ed.

Continue reading …I didn’t mention this story the other day, but since it’s gotten so much attention let’s take a look at how a parade of flags in Denair, CA this morning got its start : 13-year-old Cody Alicea rides with an American flag on the back of his bike. He says he does this to be patriotic and to honor veterans, like his own grandfather, Robert. He’s had the flag on his bike for two months but Monday, was told to take it down. A school official at Denair Middle School told Cody some students had been complaining about the flag and it was no longer allowed on school property. “In this country we’re supposed to be free,” said Cody. “And I should be able to wave my flag wherever I want to. And they’re telling me I can’t.” Cody had to take the flag off his bike and put it in his backpack, where he kept it all week. Cody’s grandfather says the school was concerned about racial tensions or uprisings because of the flag. He feels if there was really a problem it should have been brought up two months ago, not during Veterans week. And if it was an issue of safety, parents should have been contacted. So basically, once again somebody gets “offended” and school district officials fall all over themselves to placate the complainers at the expense of common sense. Well, once the story hit the blogosphere it exploded in the faces of the school officials and they had to quickly back down. Here’s today’s follow-up : He didn’t set out trying to get every patriotic person in America fired up. He just wanted to fly the flag on his bike, but 13-year-old Cody Alicea, aka “Flag Boy” has become a nationwide cause. This morning, about a hundred people, including some coming in from the East Coast escorted Cody to school. After arriving at Denair Middle School the group recited the Pledge of Allegiance and the National Anthem. The teen who was told to remove the American flag from his bike the week of Veterans Day is now back proudly carrying Old Glory, with the blessing of his apologetic school district, but that hasn’t stopped an online army from rallying around the flag. Practically every conservative Blogger in America, every Veterans group, every patriotic group, and pretty much the entire state of Texas has been Tweeting, Facebooking, and emailing about the flag flap. FOX40′s website has seen exponential traffic on the story, breaking all previous records for the most clicked on single story in station history. Cody rode his bike to school with his flag flying again this morning, and had a few friends along for the ride:
