Took ‘em long enough, huh? iHome’s iA100 was actually introduced way back in July, and at the time, it was essentially the only iPad-friendly home stereo system on the planet. Now, iHome has a bit of friendly competition out there, but at least it’s getting this guy out on store shelves long before the holiday shopping season hits full swing. For those who missed it the first go ’round, this here docking system touts Bongiovi Acoustics’ DPS technology, an inbuilt alarm clock, Bluetooth and support for the iPad, iPhone and iPod via a 30-pin Dock Connector. Too bad it’ll set you back a full $199. Continue reading …Creative spirits that know their way around an Eclipse project (and, optionally, a soldering iron) but have a deeply-rooted hatred for CDMA will be happy to know that the tinkerers at Bug Labs have announced a new partnership with AT&T, its second with a US carrier after teaming up with Verizon a few weeks back. The core of the program is the new BUG + 3G / GSM kit, featuring per-certified Bug modules ready to work on AT&T’s network; that package will in turn build on top of AT&T’s existing Connection Kit for developers that includes activated data SIMs and other tools you’ll need to build the next great connected device that Engadget will inevitably write about… and hopefully review. So, you know, make sure we’re on your list for review units, alright, everyone? It looks like the new modules will be available in January, so start working on those million-dollar ideas — in the meantime, you can find the full press release after the break. Continue reading …When Google’s Street View cars glide through your neighborhood next, you can leave the WPA2 encryption off — Canada says that the company has “discontinued” the practice of snooping on unsecured WiFi networks with its mapping vehicles, and “has no plans to resume it.” That’s one of several findings in a report by Canada’s privacy commissioner today, which also claims that the controversial data collection feature was the work of a single Google engineer, and that Google intends to use smartphones to pinpoint WiFi networks from now on. Naturally, the latter caused the commissioner concern that Android phones might capture the same data as the cars. Perhaps you’d best keep those shields up after all. Google’s wardriving days are over, says Canadian privacy commissioner originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 20 Oct 2010 00:42:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds . Permalink
Continue reading …The iOS dev community already shattered the new Apple TV, but now it’s been poisoned , too. What does this mean for you? It means that there’s still a chance your $99 set top box might be jailbroken to run apps , even though Shatter is gone . Now we’ll just have to wait and see if someone figures the hard part out, and gets some apps installed. Those Angry Birds don’t fling themselves, you know. Continue reading …Teetering no longer . According to Reuters , satellite phone maker TerreStar has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy to protect itself from liabilities in the range of $1.6 billion. As expected, a restructuring is in order, with Blackstone Group LP providing financial advice for such a move. One of TerreStars’ creditors, EchoStar, is offering $75 million in financing to help keep the company operate while it goes through the bankruptcy. Shame that it’s the icing on the cake for its Genus , having just launched on AT&T not one month ago. Them’s the breaks. Continue reading …It’s a pretty long trip down memory lane for us to return to ASUS’ ultra-thin RT-56U router; last time we saw it was behind plexiglass at CeBIT in March . At long last it’s returned to the spotlight, only this time that luminance is provided by the FCC’s notorious labs. The dual-band Gigabit Wireless-N device gets just one image — and given the unflattering angle, we’re not quite sure if it’s retained that slender figure. The filing is dated October 11 with a 45-day confidentiality agreement and enough references to US sales that we wouldn’t be surprised to see it hit stateside retail in the not-too-distant future — with or without its lean frame. Continue reading …So the Pre 2 has been announced for SFR in France and Verizon in the States, along with an unlocked model for developers… but so far, we’d only seen one of the three in the FCC. Well, here are the other two: on the left, the P102EWW, and on the right, the P102UNA. Palm’s naming convention is a little strange, so it probably bears explaining again — the “P102″ tells you that it’s a Pre 2, while “EWW” indicates CDMA and “UNA” indicates North American GSM / UMTS. From the UNA model’s filing, it would seem there isn’t any AWS capability on board, so users of T-Mobile, WIND , Mobilicity , and the like are going to have to plod along at 2G speeds if they want to play ball. You know, Murphy’s Law and all. Palm Pre 2 hits FCC in CDMA and North American GSM flavors originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 19 Oct 2010 21:34:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds . Continue reading …You seriously can’t make this stuff up — in what can only be assumed is a nod to the the one and only Beck, Activision actually is shipping two turntables and a microphone with DJ Hero 2 . And that bundle is finally on sale starting today. We’d heard earlier in the year that the company was aiming for a fall release, and sure enough, consumers can get their holiday shopping started early by heading to Best Buy (where they’ll receive a hard-shell turntable carrying case), Walmart (where the original DJ Hero will be thrown in gratis when buying the DJ Hero 2 Party Bundle on Wii or Xbox 360) or Amazon (where Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns will be oh-so-graciously tossed in for no charge). Check it right now for $59.99 (software only) to $149.99 (the full monty).
