Mac OS X 10.7 Lion announced, coming summer 2011

As promised, Apple today offered a preview of Mac OS X 10.7, a.k.a “Lion,” which Steve Jobs says has been inspired by the company’s efforts with iOS. That inspiration has resulted in an expanded use of multitouch gestures (but not on a vertical screen), an emphasis on iPad-like full screen applications, and — here’s the big one — an App Store for OS X (which will also be coming to Snow Leopard). Also new is the Launchpad application launcher, which will give you an iPad-like grid of icons and let you create iOS-style folders for applications, and the all-new Mission Control, which offers an Expose view of your windows, your open apps, and your dock. No exact launch date just yet, but Apple says Lion will roll out sometime in the summer of 2011 — head on past the break for the full press release. FaceTime coming to OS X, beta available today

We just spotted the FaceTime logo, or a version of it, lurking in the OS X dock during Apple’s iMovie 11 demo. New version of iChat with FaceTime compatibility? We’d put money on it. Update: It’s real! It appears to be an all-new app, instead of a version of iChat AV. You use your Mac’s Address Book and make calls right from the app. If your chat counterpart is in portrait or landscape the display automatically adjusts, and you can also go to full screen. Better yet? It’s out today, in a beta form. Be sure to check out our complete live coverage right here ! Apple announces iLife ’11, $49 upgrade or free with every new Mac, available today

There you have it. Shockingly enough , iMovie, iPhoto, and GarageBand have all been modernized sufficiently to merit having their names appended with ’11. iPhoto ’11 is taking the early demo lead in the live event, with hot new slideshow themes . Gee, Steve, you’re building it up nice and slow, huh? There are added Facebook and email sharing enhancements and new full screen modes that make it look a lot like … an iPad app. Gallery: iPhoto ’11 iMovie ’11 will freshen up the audio editing options (finally!) and add “one step effects,” a People Finder that identifies individuals in movie clips, and an apparently effortless movie trailer maker. Intriguing. The audio tweaks include per-segment sound levels adjustments as well as easy fade sliders, there are also additional new audio effects for people to play around with. 24fps video editing and output is now supported, allowing you to export more film-like trailers using the templates thrown into this new software. Good news on the upload front too, as direct sharing to Facebook and Vimeo have also been added. Gallery: iMovie ’11 Apple is adding FlexTime, Groove Matching, more guitar and amp effects, new piano and guitar lessons, and finally a “How Did I Play” feature to GarageBand ’11 . Groove Matching can be summarized with a quote from the Cupertino crew’s Xander Soren: “it’s like an automatic spellchecker for bad rhythm.” As to “How Did I Play,” that’s a mixture of post-play analysis and a Rock Band -like live note monitor, which highlights in green the notes you strike correctly or in red the ones you miss. It works with both the guitar and piano. Gallery: GarageBand ’11 iLife ’11 is available today , as a free extra on new Macs or as a $49 upgrade on differently new Apple machines. Boxee Box shipping November 10th in US and Canada

And with that, the long (long!) wait is (just) about over. Boxee just announced this morning that its long awaited Boxee Box (you know, the one built by D-Link ) will be shipping out on November 10th for customers who have pre-ordered from Amazon in the United States and Best Buy or Future Shop in Canada. Furthermore, pre-orders taken in Australia / New Zealand and other nations across Europe will start heading out “shortly thereafter.” For those looking to pick one up after the initial rush, it’s expected to start splashing down in retail on November 17th. So, you in? Continue reading Boxee Box shipping November 10th in US and Canada Boxee Box shipping November 10th in US and Canada originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 20 Oct 2010 12:40:00 EDT. Android 3.0 due to start hitting tablets in December ahead of January launch

A holiday tradition? Making things out of gingerbread, and Google is doing its part to keep that practice alive according to a report stating Android 3.0 Gingerbread is set to hit some tablets this December. Those will just be early samples destined only to light up the eyes of engineers who’ve been very, very good this year, but the rest of us naughty boys and girls will get to see those slates when they launch to the public in January. We hear there’s a little electronics show happening that time of year, and supposedly HTC , Samsung , and Motorola will be showing their Gingerbread tablets there, amongst others (but not Lenovo , apparently). We can’t wait to get a taste. Android 3.0 due to start hitting tablets in December ahead of January launch originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 20 Oct 2010 12:21:00 EDT. The Apple Store is down

Oh man, the Apple Store is down, guys. Do you think that means Apple might be about to announce or release new products that we can buy with human money? We’re going to camp outside of the Apple HQ and liveblog our experience , just in case something goes down. Our guess is 1PM, were anything to happen. [Thanks to everyone who sent this in] The Apple Store is down originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 20 Oct 2010 11:47:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds . Permalink

Tegatech Tega v2 review

We haven’t seen many — okay, any — Windows 7 slates from major manufactures (i.e. HP , Lenovo, ASUS) like Steve Ballmer promised back in July , but one thing is for certain, smaller companies aren’t just sitting around waiting for the other shoe, er slates to drop. We’ve already gotten our hands on products from the likes of CTL and Netbook Navigator , but Australian-based Tegatech also wants a piece of the large touchscreen pie with its 10.1-inch Tega v2 . Like the others, the $799 Tega v2 is pretty much a netbook that’s lost its keyboard — it’s got an Intel Atom N455 processor, 2GB of RAM, and a 32GB SSD that boots Windows 7 Home Premium — but the 0.5-inch / 1.9-pound slate sets itself apart by being one of the thinnest and lightest out there. Oh, and did we mention that it dual boots Android? So, is the Tega v2 the Win 7 tablet you’ve been waiting for — assuming you have in fact been waiting for one? Hit that read more button to find out in our full review! Microsoft’s Phil Spencer rains on Sony’s 3D parade, thinks 3DS has potential

Is 3D gaming on the verge of completely revolutionizing your world? If you’re a hardcore PlayStation fan, you might believe the answer to that question is “yes.” However, given the recent DisplaySearch findings on 3DTV adoption , we’re thinking more of you fall in with the leanings of Microsoft’s Phil Spencer, who is making it clear that he isn’t pushing the technology at this point: For better or for worse, people just don’t really have TVs in their house right now that are going to do 3D in a way that’s going to work… As a corporate mandate, I don’t need to sell you a new TV, that’s not part of my business model. Other companies maybe have that part of their business model. I don’t. “Other companies,” eh? Yeah, we think you can figure out who he’s talking about there. Phil isn’t just dishing up the Haterade, though, throwing props to Nintendo: “I like the 3DS , you don’t have to wear the glasses.” Microsoft’s Phil Spencer rains on Sony’s 3D parade, thinks 3DS has potential originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 20 Oct 2010 10:42:00 EDT. AlphaUi Back-Type keyboard for tablets will never catch on, but we wish it would

You know, traditionally we try to be thankful for stuff like slim device profiles and innovative touch UIs, particularly with Thanksgiving coming up soon, but every once in a while we shake a fist against the aesthetics of our time and wish for an alternate history that had rerouted us to a 2010 full of IBM-built keyboards and buttons galore. AlphaUi’s Back-Type, which has been making the rounds for a couple weeks, is just such a technology, with 24 anachronistically tactile keys on the back designed for a bit of blind typing that engages eight fingers instead of the typical two thumbs. It’s not an entirely new idea, Grippity’s been talking about rear mounted keys for a while , and Microsoft Research just put out a clunker of a prototype , but AlphaUi’s version seems the most mature and usable. Right now the keyboard is being demoed on the rear of 7-inch Archos tablets, but AlphaUi will be showing off the tech at CES and probably courting a hardware partner if they haven’t found one already. Check out a video of the tech after the break.
