Intel announces plans to spend up to $8 billion on U.S. factory upgrades

Apple and Google may be sitting on their piles of cash, but Intel sure is dipping into its reserves in a big way these days — the company has just announced that it’s following up its nearly $8 billion acquisition of McAfee with a multi-billion dollar investment in upgrades to is factories in Arizona and Oregon. That investment will total between $6 billion and $8 billion, and include the development of an entirely new fabrication plant in Oregon, in addition to upgrades at the two existing facilities that will allow Intel to move forward with its 22-nanometer manufacturing process . As you can no doubt guess, the investment will also be quite a boon to both areas — Intel says that the upgrades, which will take place over “several years,” will create as many as 8,000 construction jobs and between 800 and 1,000 permanent jobs at the facilities. Head on past the break for the full press release. Micron introduces V100 LCOS projector, WQVGA in an 8.5cc package

Projector-phones are still a rare commodity, despite the array of tiny projectors available to shove in the things. Micron is now beaming a picture of its hat into the ring, announcing the V100 LCOS projector. It’s a wee thing, measuring just 33 x 31 x 12mm, pumping out five lumens of light at a resolution of 320 x 240 while pulling down just 1.5 watts of power. The big deal here is integrated circuitry that takes care of any processing required to display images, meaning no additional drain on your already over-taxed mobile processor. No word on availability or what this will cost manufacturers to stuff in their devices, but we’d like to see a few more pixels out of it before it goes mainstream. Netflix’s new PS3 app includes new features, new headaches (video)

Take Netflix’s widely adored streaming service, subtract the disc, add 1080p video and 5.1 audio and you should have something everyone’s happy with right? Not exactly, as we’ve discovered a day after the updated Netflix app launched for the PlayStation 3 with a bunch of new features and unfortunately, a few new issues to go along with them including the app not working at all on imported systems, needing a new PSN user ID and the confusion of certain users seeing very different interfaces than what was promised. You’ve been lighting up our comments with things you’ve noticed so we tried it out ourselves and with Netflix’s help, have a few answers. Check after the break for a video walkthrough of the new interface including the new video browsing feature, plus information about some of the initial problems users have experienced and how to solve them. Barnes & Noble holding a ‘very special event’ next week

Can you believe it’s almost been a year since the Nook was announced ? The reader was first shown to the public on October 20th last year, and started shipping to the public in limited quantities in December. We don’t know if Barnes & Noble is planning a follow-up just yet, but this mysterious invite we just got in the ol’ email inbox might hint at such an occasion. Last year’s event in NY was at a much larger venue, while this year B&N is hoping to cram people into its Union Square store in the area it typically hosts authors for book readings — that could be a hint at something less impressive, or maybe they just wanted to cut costs. Maybe Chairman Leonard Riggio is going to read a book to us! Hopefully it’s a little more exciting than that, and we’ll be sure to tell you all about it either way. webOS 2.0 review

webOS 2.0 review

When it comes to webOS 2.0 (now actually called HP webOS), it almost felt like we’d never see the version number, let alone get to review it. It’s been an intense few months for Palm: after floundering in the early part of the smartphone wars, it was scooped up by HP for a tidy sum of $1.2b. Though it seemed like the dream of webOS could fade away, the company made it clear that it had plans to not only continue the work Palm had done in the mobile world, but extend what the tiny company had created to other platforms as well (tablets, and yes, printers). We’ve heard a lot of talk from both parties since the acquisition, but have seen little in the way of proof that progress was indeed being made — but that’s all changed today. Palm has officially released its second generation OS into the wild, along with a new, beefed up version of the Pre (at least in France — North American handsets are coming soon). The company offered us an early developer phone to test out the new OS and see if the combination of tightened code and a significantly faster device (the Pre 2 clocks in with a 1GHz CPU) could make a difference between last place and a fighting chance. We’ve taken an extensive look at the new OS, so read on for our full take! RIM’s Jim Balsillie hits back at the Steve Jobs rant, Apple’s ‘distortion field’

You had to know that Steve wouldn’t get away with putting his five minute, competition-slamming manifesto out into the ether without some snap back from the competition. We’ve already heard responses from TweetDeck and Andy Rubin , and now RIM’s co-CEO Jim Balsillie has issued a statement in response to Jobs. Here it is: “For those of us who live outside of Apple’s distortion field, we know that 7-inch tablets will actually be a big portion of the market and we know that Adobe Flash support actually matters to customers who want a real web experience. We also know that while Apple’s attempt to control the ecosystem and maintain a closed platform may be good for Apple, developers want more options and customers want to fully access the overwhelming majority of web sites that use Flash. We think many customers are getting tired of being told what to think by Apple. And by the way, RIM has achieved record shipments for five consecutive quarters and recently shared guidance of 13.8 – 14.4 million BlackBerry smartphones for the current quarter. Apple’s preference to compare its September-ending quarter with RIM’s August-ending quarter doesn’t tell the whole story because it doesn’t take into account that industry demand in September is typically stronger than summer months, nor does it explain why Apple only shipped 8.4 million devices in its prior quarter and whether Apple’s Q4 results were padded by unfulfilled Q3 customer demand and channel orders. As usual, whether the subject is antennas, Flash or shipments, there is more to the story and sooner or later, even people inside the distortion field will begin to resent being told half a story.” Sort of a big one, but we figure RIM at least deserves some equal time. Interesting that RIM is fighting Apple’s assertion of surpassing their handset shipments, we’ll have to see how that one settles once we get some “official” numbers from an unbiased third party. Meanwhile, let the mudslinging continue! RIM’s Jim Balsillie hits back at the Steve Jobs rant, Apple’s ‘distortion field’ originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 19 Oct 2010 16:50:00 EDT. Mophie Juice Packs for iPhone 4, iPad en route to Apple Store

We have some details for you on Mophie’s upcoming Juice Pack Universal line . Ready? Okay: available at the Apple Store sometime this month (and at Mophie’s website now), all the new models, including Air ($80), Boost ($60), Reserve ($40) and Powerstation ($100), are compatible with all iPhone and iPod touch form factors, while the latter also throws iPad compatibility into the mix. Additionally, Reserve and Boost feature one amp of power, (which, as the company points out, means they’ll charge your device twice as fast as your standard 500 mAh charger), while Power Station boasts 2.1 amps. Not bad, eh? PR after the break. Power mad modder rips the keys out of his Epic 4G, calls it a gamepad (video)

Sometimes a mod is more than just a mod: it’s a manifesto. When Phawx over at BrainLazy decided to take an X-Acto knife to his Epic 4G’s keypad, he knew what he was doing: both challenging Apple’s place in the world of cellphone-based gaming and encouraging other manufacturers to step up to the plate. Although early on in the design process he mocked up some plastic controller pieces to replace the factory keypad altogether, by the time it came to try the thing out he realized that by simply pulling out the unused keys and making a few minor (very minor) cosmetic adjustments he could give his touchscreen handset a gamepad slider more eminently more playable than your Droid’s Game Gripper — and eminently less mythical than your PSP Phone . Video after the break. Verizon rolls out 3G Network Extender for $250

Samsung had signaled Big Red’s intention to replace its old, non-3G Network Extender as early as CES in January this year — something Sprint did a couple months back — but only now are they getting official with the updated model. The aptly-named 3G Network Extender is a warmed-over version of the original, boosting simultaneous connection capability from four to six (Sammy’s specs at CES had it listed for eight, interestingly) and offering EV-DO coverage in the event that your home, office, or other location of interest isn’t blanketed with Verizon spectrum. The company claims it’ll work for up to 40 feet surrounding the device, which seems reasonable considering your average home is rife with RF-hating barriers. There are no monthly fees for the device, but you’ll be shelling out $249.99 upfront; it’s available now. Follow the break for Verizon’s press release.
