Big deal : Interior Secretary Ken Salazar announced Tuesday afternoon that deepwater oil and gas drilling could resume. Salazar said in a statement that the drilling could go on with some conditions, including “compliance with all existing rules and requirements, including those that recently went into effect, and that members of industry demonstrate the availability of adequate blowout containment resources.” This decision had nothing to do with drilling safety and everything to do with the midterm elections that come up in three weeks. In fact, there probably won’t be much of any new drilling because of this change since many of the rigs that would have been drilling all along have been moved to other parts of the world. The ones that remain are under such tight regulation it may not be worthwhile for the companies to restart them. As it turns out the moratorium was completely unnecessary and the oil spill, as big as it was, did little of the damage the administration had forecast.

I don’t even know why we bother to have a congress and elected leaders anymore when a single unelected judge with a lifetime appointment can simply undo with a stroke of a pen anything the elected leadership does.: A federal judge ordered that the U.S. military stop enforcing the don’t ask, don’t tell policy on Tuesday. Judge Virginia Phillips ordered the military “immediately to suspend and discontinue any investigation, or discharge, separation, or other proceeding, that may have been commenced under the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell”.” The judge had previously ruled that the policy regarding gays serving in the military violated service members Fifth Amendment rights but delayed issuing the injunction. This is probably a big break for Obama. He kept saying he wanted to stop “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” but never did anything about it. Now he can just point to the ruling and doesn’t have to actually take a stand. Isn’t it amazing that after 17 years on the books something can suddenly be unconstitutional?

ABC News, which likes to bill itself as delivering “up-to-the-minute political coverage,” on Sunday identified nine key Senate seats and mistakenly labeled five of them as held by Democrats. In front of a map, Good Morning America's Dan Harris pronounced, “Our political unit says nine Democratic-held Senate seats are now leaning Republican. Those are the ones in pink, to the eastern part of the country .” Highlighted in pink as Democrat seats? Ohio, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Louisiana and Florida. All of those are, in fact, Republican controlled. (In order, Republicans George Voinovich, Richard Burr, Judd Gregg, David Vitter and

NES controller gains a Rumble Pak, DIYer gains a dedicated following

Ah, the Rumble Pak . It was arguably the must-have accessory for the Nintendo 64, and had it been around during the time of R.B.I. Baseball , we’re certain it would’ve went over well. One Andy Goetz decided that he’d be interested in reshaping history a bit, and spent 20-some-odd hours building a rumble device for his NES controller as a deadline loomed. He ended up submitting it in Oregon State University’s Engineering Expo, and while it seems that they can’t actually control when the rumble happens, at least your youngster will likely believe that he / she is doing something right while they’re being humiliated by CPU racers in Excitebike . Cruel? Maybe. But totally practical. NES controller gains a Rumble Pak, DIYer gains a dedicated following originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 12 Oct 2010 16:59:00 EDT.
