Bill Maher Tuesday made a statement on MSNBC that would be truly embarrassing for the so-called news network if any of its executives cared at all about being an impartial disseminator of information. At the end of an almost thirteen minute interview with Rachel Maddow, the comedian said of Republicans, “I hate them as much as you do” (video follows with commentary): As readers would expect, what preceded Maher's final assertion was his typical Republican bashing of his usual targets such as Ronald Reagan as well as the newest object of his disaffection, Congressman Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.). This was all the predictable, GOP-hating fare that one is bludgeoned with when HBO's “Real Time” is in session. The only things out of the ordinary were the venue and the response from the host. If Maddow wanted to preserve even the slightest appearance of impartiality and journalistic integrity, instead of laughing like a hyena when Maher said he hates Republicans as much as she does, she would have countered by stating that she just disagrees with conservative viewpoints, but doesn't hold any animosity towards those on the opposite side of the aisle. If she had even a shred of journalistic sense in her body, Maddow would have made it clear to her audience that she doesn't hate Republicans at all. Since she didn't, one has to conclude that Maher's right, and not only does Maddow despise a large percentage of the nation, she's also comfortable allowing it to be aired on the very “news network” she's employed by. Quite a statement, don't you think? Makes you wonder what kind of a business model exists at this network where it is acceptable for its employees to disparage such a large percentage of the possible audience. As it is the goal of any company to expand its market share, it's considered bad for business to insult and demean potential customers, especially such a large swath of them. Does MSNBC not care about this? Ditto NBC, GE and Comcast? What kind of an environment exists in this organization where its employees are given license to antagonize such a large portion of possible patrons? Of possibly utmost importance, how can she be allowed to participate in any primary or election coverage in the future if she's not willing to counter an on-air claim that she hates Repubicans? It would be from this point forward categorically absurd for MSNBC to allow her to be involved in any events where her antipathy toward the GOP could cloud her commentary. This of course assumes the network she represents actually cares about such a thing, which at this point seems highly doubtful. As much as it pains me to say, congratulations are in order to Maher as he unknowingly and quite likely unintentionally exposed just how biased Maddow and the station she represents are.

The media weren’t wrong to cover it as a dramatic debate, but all of the hype and horror looked a little bizarre by the weekend – like wide-eyed, screaming hurricane warnings on the Weather Channel followed by a sunny calm. When the deal was struck, the TV pundits quickly moved on to how there were sharper, harsher battles ahead over much larger chunks of federal spending. That’s true. But in hindsight, the entire shutdown fight looks by comparison like a war over who was splitting the pizza delivery bill….tip. The $38 billion in spending cuts is a bit of an achievement when Obama didn’t want to cut anything – but it’s still the drop in the proverbial $3.7 trillion bucket. Instead of fighting over who’s the “winner” in this small skirmish, let’s just focus on a few obnoxious shutdown spins. 1. Obama the adult vs. Tea Party brats. CBS reporter Chip Reid summed this up helpfully: “One thing the White House is hoping to do is have the President appear like an adult breaking up a childish battle.” CNN analyst Gloria Borger “Politically, what he’s trying to do is be the grown-up.” This is the media trying to help the president triangulate out of owning any of this deficit mess. This is about spending for the fiscal year that began last October , more than six months ago when the Democrats controlled everything. Back then, the supposed “grown-up” Obama didn’t lift a finger to stop kicking the can with continuing resolutions. He was too busy blaming Republicans for driving the country into a “ditch.” Then after the GOP took over the House in January, Obama refused to participate in negotiations. In the closing days, the Reids and Borgers pretended Obama was not a partisan leader who would stand with the Democrats. The media didn’t want him to be an architect of

Without skipping a beat, Elisabeth Hasselbeck marvelously asked, ” Then doesn't that make President Bush very smart as well then?

Boone Pickens) will be out in force to refute this, and we’ll all just pretend it never happened: Cornell University professors will soon publish research that concludes natural gas produced with a drilling method called “hydraulic fracturing” contributes to global warming as much as coal, or even more. The conclusion is explosive because natural gas enjoys broad political support – including White House backing – due to its domestic abundance and lower carbon dioxide emissions when burned than other fossil fuels. Cornell Prof. Robert Howarth, however, argues that development of gas from shale rock formations produced through hydraulic fracturing – dubbed “fracking” – brings far more methane emissions than conventional gas production. Enough, he argues, to negate the carbon advantage that gas has over coal and oil when they’re burned for energy, because methane is such a potent greenhouse gas. “The [greenhouse gas] footprint for shale gas is greater than that for conventional gas or oil when viewed on any time horizon, but particularly so over 20 years. Compared to coal, the footprint of shale gas is at least 20% greater and perhaps more than twice as great on the 20-year horizon and is comparable when compared over 100 years,” states the upcoming study from Howarth, who is a professor of ecology and environmental biology, and other Cornell researchers.

Elton Gallegly (R-CA) is one of those low-profile do-nothing Representatives in the House that manages to get re-elected over and over again because he represents a district which is changing, but still has its fair share of bigots and tea party types. I know. I live there, and he represents me. An adopted son of Simi Valley, Gallegly panders to the Tea Party while pulling in major money from builders, insurers, and defense contractors in California. He is also extreme — highly extreme — on the topic of immigration, despite the fact that his district has a growing Latino population and relies on that population to keep the economy moving. He is also now the gatekeeper for any immigration legislation we might see coming from the House of Representatives. As chair of the House Judiciary Committee’s Subcommittee on Immigration, he is taking a hard-line approach to immigration reform. Via America’s Voice : Yes, Gallegly wants to force a mass exodus of undocumented immigrants from the United States — said as much at his first hearing : “Good morning,” Gallegly begins. “I have long said that the way to solve the problem of illegal immigration is fairly simple. “First, we must enforce our laws and secure the border. Second, we must remove the magnets that encourage illegal immigration. And finally, we must remove the benefits that make it easier for them to stay.” In other words, if it’s not easy for “them” to stay, they leave. And this : In a July 2009 op-ed for The Hill, Gallegly argued for the passage of his animal-crush bill, noting that such snuff films are somehow connected to illegal immigration and crime: “[G]ang activity, illegal gambling, drug trafficking, illegal immigration and acts of human violence all go hand in hand with animal cruelty.” (The piece had been posted on Gallegly’s official congressional website, but it has since been taken down.) In the op-ed, Gallegly echoed the conservative criticism that illegal immigrants bring with them a bigger world of crime, and he points out that an Arizona crime syndicate that “preyed on illegal immigrants, subjecting them to kidnappings, home invasions, and armed robberies” is also being accused of “raising roosters for illegal cockfighting matches.” While linking illegal immigration and animal-crush videos, Gallegly also maintained that animal abusers tend to become serial killers. The Son of Sam, the Boston Strangler, and the Unabomber all had a history of torturing animals, he writes, and Jeffrey Dahmer “progressed from cutting up animals to cutting up humans and eating them.” Gallegly was lumping together illegal immigration, animal murders, and the worst serial killers of modern times. Gallegly has long been a leader of the movement to end birthright citizenship, and his idea of immigration reform is mass deportation . Despite the fact that 40% of his district is Latino , Gallegly really only represents Simi Valley, a bedroom community comprised of mostly white people fleeing the San Fernando Valley in search of a place with more people “like them”. If you’re reading this and think that Republicans care about the economy, think again. When it comes to immigration, they’re quite willing to blast open the economy and drive states into bankruptcy — California in particular — by deporting people who contribute billions to the economy on a state and national level. Here’s what he wants to do after shipping people out of the state, whether they’re here legally or not (he’s also targeting H1B visas, by the way). First ship them out, then make E-Verify mandatory . Gallegly is fearmongering and playing to the xenophobes who fear anyone who looks, speaks, acts or thinks differently from them. Make no mistake — he’s as bad as the Steve Kings and LaMar Smiths out there…but he flies under the radar on purpose, while intentionally trying to stir division between Latinos and blacks, native Americans, and others. Watch out for him…I’ll be keeping an eye out, too.

As The Hill reported this week, Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton was furious at the decision and didn’t hold back expressing her anger over the deal. Delegate: DC residents should tell Congress to ‘go straight to hell’ : Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D) unleashed on Congress Thursday for veering toward a government shutdown, saying her constituents in Washington, D.C., are “being treated as colonists of the Congress.” Norton appeared visibly angry during an television interview, during which she lobbed attacks at the legislature and Republicans for their behavior in the budget talks. “District residents are being treated as colonists of the Congress of the United States. We are absolutely outraged. This is the functional equivalent of bombing innocent civilians,” she said on WTTG-TV. Norton chastised Republicans for pushing for a policy rider to be included in a proposed stopgap spending measure that would prevent taxpayer funds from paying for abortions in D.C. “It’s time that the District of Columbia told the Congress to go straight to hell,” she said. Read on… And Mayor Vincent Gray among others were arrested protesting the budget deal today — Capitol Police arrest DC mayor at rally against budget deal : Capitol Police arrested dozens of protesters conducting a rally on Capitol Hill against Washington, D.C.-related riders in the new 2011 budget deal. Washington Mayor Vincent Gray, Council Chairman Kwame Brown, Ward 4 Councilwoman Muriel Bowser and Ward 6 Councilman Tommy Wells were among the 41 people who were arrested after protesters blocked Constitution Avenue. Organized by the voting-rights group DC Vote, the rally aimed to send a message to House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio), Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) and President Obama: Don’t “sacrifice” the rights of D.C. residents to get a deal on the budget. “Clearly, both our opponents and friends think D.C. is weak,” the group said in a statement Monday. “Neither thinks we are strong enough to fight back against oppression.” “We may not have legislative power, but we have the power of the people, and D.C. residents refuse to be treated like second-class citizens,” it added. “D.C. is not weak. Tonight, we are going to fight back.”
