The Altaz 3.5-inch Internet Clock Radio tells you the weather, ‘provides endless entertainment’

“Endless entertainment from a clock radio?” you say, cynically sipping on your tea. “Yes, that’s what I said” cries the Altaz press release embedded below, pledging that its new 3.5-inch touchscreen’d Internet Clock Radio will keep you smiling until the end of time. The device will naturally tell you when exactly that is and wake you up before you get there, also showing the weather, streaming internet radio, and sucking down photos from Picasa. You know, pretty much all the stuff a Chumby One can do. But, can it walk ? Unlikely, though the built-in battery, SD card reader, and 802.11g wireless do conspire to make it reasonably independent. All yours for a $99 MSRP, though a little Googling will save you 15 bucks or so. AP Laments ‘Productive’ Congress ‘Gets No Respect From Voters’

To Associated Press writer Jim Abrams, the 111th Congress seems to be the Rodney Dangerfield of American politics. It just gets no respect. This despite the fact, Abrams laments in an October 18 story , that it's been a thoroughly “productive” Congress. Apparently to the AP writer, American voters are just ingrates who don't appreciate the “historic” nature of the Obama/Pelosi/Reid partnership the past two years: read more

NTT Japan builds a USB box for sharing with the cloud

This unassuming black box, the N-Transfer, has one purpose and one alone — to stick Japan’s USB 2.0 storage devices, scanners and printers firmly in the cloud, without the need for a intermediate computer. In that respect the device is much like a certain Pogoplug , but telephony provider NTT Japan’s doing the formula one better, as this box doesn’t just share a pair of USB ports across a web interface. You can transfer up to 500MB files point-to-point across the company’s high-speed fiber optic internet with boxes at either end — each equipped with gigabit ethernet — or upload documents from a Fujitsu ScanSnap or Epson Colorio scanner (and hopefully others) directly to Evernote. If you live in Japan, have access to a fiber optic connection and don’t mind the copious amount of hate regular ol’ DSL users are directing at you right now, you can grab one for ¥7,350 (about $90) at Amazon. Flexible, implantable LEDs look set to start a new body modification craze

LED lights are cool , you’re cool , why not combine the two, right? We doubt that’s quite the reasoning that led to this international research project, but it’s certainly an appealing way to look at it. Our old buddy John Rogers from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has headed up a research team with participants from the US, China, Korea, and Singapore, who have together produced and demonstrated a new flexible and implantable LED array. Bettering previous efforts at inserting lights under the human skin, this approach allows for stretching and twisting by as much as 75 percent, while the whole substrate is encased in thin silicon rubber making it waterproof. Basically, it’s a green light to subdermal illumination, which could aid such things as monitoring the healing of wounds, activating light-sensitive drug delivery, spectroscopy, and even robotics. By which we’re guessing they mean our robot overlords will be able to color-code us more easily. Yeah, that must be it. GOP Sooner Boomer

Boy, something must be going right in Oklahoma : OKLAHOMA CITY — The number of registered Republicans in Oklahoma continues to increase, closing the gap on the advantage Democrats have enjoyed for years. The Oklahoma Election Board reported Friday that Republicans have seen a net increase of 28,599 registered voters since Jan. 15, compared to a net increase of 313 for Democrats. The number of registered independents increased by more than 11,000. And a lot of those independents will be pulling the handle for the GOP this year.

Playing Hulu on Google TV is as easy as changing one setting

We know Google mentioned it would be a “good citizen” and allow Hulu to block its browser ID, but that doesn’t mean you have to be one too. By default, accessing the website from a Google TV device yields a prompt hoping you’ll wait for the two to work out some kind of agreement on Hulu Plus access , but with a Flash enabled browser at the ready, we’re sure all you want to do is press play. The fine folks over at GadgetWhore first discovered that by digging deep into the advanced settings of the Chrome browser app and changing the browser ID to “Generic” or any custom string one may prefer, Hulu streams immediately start playing with no problem (users may want to change back to default afterwards to make sure other pages render properly.) That’s one benefit of having a “run-of-the-mill” desktop browser integrated into your set-top box, so w while early adopters may only be moments away from discovering the dark side of Google TV, it seems like a few easy browser tweaks may take care of most issues — let us know if you’ve run into any others.
