Mercedes’ new Media Interface Plus is smartphone-friendly, Bluetooth-equipped, and Pandora-ready

Mercedes has a new $298 accessory available now that adds another level of smartphone compatibility to its existing in-vehicle controls of iPods and aux audio. The Media Interface Plus allows the car to stream audio from an iPhone, BlackBerry, or any other compatible Bluetooth music player (we’re guessing A2DP, though Mercedes doesn’t specify). The MIP can also control the Pandora app on the iPhone and BlackBerry, and other features like SMS and email reading / writing are forthcoming. There are iPod / iPhone and Mini-USB plugs for charging, and an optional cable can pull video from your iPhone as well and display it on your in-dash screen — when the car is at a standstill, of course. Sprint invites Dell Inspiron Mini 1012 and Inspiron 11z into the dual-mode 3G / WiMAX league

It’s been a good long while since a Dell Mini 10 with WiMAX crossed the FCC , but it’s finally headed to Sprint next month, and its big brother the 11.6-inch Dell Inspiron 11z is along for the ride as well. Both sport Intel Centrino Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250 chips to serve up Sprint 4G and 802.11n WiFi, plus EV-DO Rev. A for 3G speeds on an unspecified secondary card of some sort. The Mini 10′s mostly your standard 10-inch Atom N450 netbook, but we’re happy to say this one comes with a six-cell battery, and the Inspiron 11z got a modern 1.2GHz Core i3-330UM processor under the hood, which should contribute favorably to both longevity and speed. The Mini 10 is free on two-year contract, while the 11z will set you back $150; find both at Sprint stores starting November 14th. PR after the break. Lightbulb Lunacy: Is "Heatball" Art or Affront?

Image: heatball.de Banning old lightbulbs seems like low-hanging fruit, an easy way to significantly reduce energy usage with little to no loss of lifestyle comforts. But the bulb bans persistently promote protest, and bring out the curmudgeons resistant to change. European regulators jumped aboard the bulb-ban bandwagon in 2009. Since 1 September of that year, it has been illegal to sell light bulbs that do not meet “eco-design” standards

Why Hayes Valley Farm Doesn’t Care About Growing Food

Photos by Jaymi Heimbuch In many ways, a community garden is less about the “garden” and more about the “community,” and such is the case with San Francisco’s Hayes Valley Farm . Once the site of a freeway damaged in the 1989 earthquake, the unused space was going to be turned into housing. Instead, a group of activists got their hands on it and have turned it into a 2.5 acre haven for gardeners and anyone who just feels like getting dirty for a few hours. In fact, that’s really more the point of the Hayes Valley Farm project –… Read the full story on TreeHugger

The Stories New York Times Liberals Tell Themselves About the Tea Party

In his Monday column, “ Tales of the Tea Party ,” Ross Douthat, the New York Times' s idea of a conservative, exploded four common Tea Party myths spread by the left. The text box read “The stories liberals tell themselves.” What Douthat couldn’t mention was that all four kinds of “stories” have been told by Times reporters as well. Douthat began by debunking the Tea Party racism myth, one spread by the paper's Tea Party beat reporter Kate Zernike on several occasions, to the point of considering opposition to the minimum wage racially suspect . A month ago, a U.C.L.A. graduate student named Emily Elkins spent hours roaming a Tea Party rally on the Washington Mall, photographing every sign she saw. Elkins, a former CATO Institute intern, was examining the liberal conceit that Tea Party marches are rife with racism and conspiracy theorizing. Last week, The Washington Post reported on her findings: just 5 percent of the 250 signs referenced Barack Obama’s race or religion, and 1 percent brought up his birth certificate. The majority focused on bailouts, deficits and spending — exactly the issues the Tea Partiers claim inspired their movement in the first place. The easy thing would be to take them at their word. But for liberals, that would be too simple. The Democrats are weeks away from a midterm thumping that wasn’t supposed to happen, and the liberal mind is desperate for a narrative, a storyline, something to ease the pain of losing to a ragtag band of right-wing populists. Something that explains the Tea Parties — and then explains them away. The “Tea Partiers are racists” theory is the most inflammatory storyline, but there are many more. Let’s consider them, in order of increasing plausibility. Douthat then posted some paragraphs under the following four bullet headlines of stories liberal tell themselves. Under Douthat’s headlines I've inserted examples of how Times reporters have told their readers those same liberal stories. read more

Verizon to sell Galaxy Tab starting November 11 for $600, world schedules chucklefest for same day

Crazy, right? With the impossible-to-ignore iPad starting at just $499 (and just $630 in Verizon’s own stores when bundled with a MiFi), America’s largest carrier is actually planning to hawk Samsung’s Galaxy Tab for… $599.99. It’s an almost unbelievable price point, and unlike the legions of netbooks that Big Red offers, there looks to be zero subsidization available. The Android 2.2-based unit (which will be loaded down with V CAST apps) will hit retail on November 11th, and since it’s being sold at full price, a data plan (which starts at $20 per month for 1GB) is completely optional. Good luck to you both — we’re dead serious about y’all needing it. The natives are getting restless : Jim Oberstar and Chip Cravaack didn’t just face each other this morning at the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center Auditorium, they faced angry mobs of their opponent’s supporters. Just seconds into the first comments by DFLer Oberstar, Cravaack supporters began to shout the long-term incumbent down with calls of “liar” and “Obama Junior.” By the time challenger Cravaack’s turn came, Oberstar supporters responded in kind. Moderators asked for civility and respect, but the cat calls and jeering from a nearly-full auditorium continued through most of the 90-minute forum, often drowning-out candidates’ answers over a faulty sound system that lacked volume. Oberstar was cut short several times, and fell into responding to Cravaack supporters as they heckled him. “You just don’t want to hear the facts. You don’t want to hear the truth,” Oberstar tried to say. “You don’t know the truth,” a Cravaack supporter responded. The correct line is “you can’t HANDLE the truth!” Anyone who thinks that bipartisanship will be possible on any significant issue in the future is kidding themselves.

Geez, I hope so, but it’s only one poll so far : Carly Fiorina currently leads by three points against Barbara Boxer in the race for United States Senate from California. U.S. Senate Ballot Total Fiorina 46% Total Boxer 43% Total Other Candidates 5% Undecided 6% Meg Whitman leads by one point in the race for Governor of California. Governor’s Ballot Total Whitman 45% Total Brown 44% Total Other Candidates 4% Undecided 7% Conclusions Republicans currently hold narrow leads in California’s top two statewide races this fall, though both remain very competitive. I still have hope that a majority of my fellow Californians will not be dumb enough to return Boxer to the Senate and Brown to the governor’s mansion.
