You know, traditionally we try to be thankful for stuff like slim device profiles and innovative touch UIs, particularly with Thanksgiving coming up soon, but every once in a while we shake a fist against the aesthetics of our time and wish for an alternate history that had rerouted us to a 2010 full of IBM-built keyboards and buttons galore. AlphaUi’s Back-Type, which has been making the rounds for a couple weeks, is just such a technology, with 24 anachronistically tactile keys on the back designed for a bit of blind typing that engages eight fingers instead of the typical two thumbs. It’s not an entirely new idea, Grippity’s been talking about rear mounted keys for a while , and Microsoft Research just put out a clunker of a prototype , but AlphaUi’s version seems the most mature and usable. Right now the keyboard is being demoed on the rear of 7-inch Archos tablets, but AlphaUi will be showing off the tech at CES and probably courting a hardware partner if they haven’t found one already. Continue reading …A sad addition to the Teen Driver library: An 18-year-old driver has been arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run after a 16-year-old Notre Dame High School student was struck and killed while running with his Cross Country team in Sherman Oaks. Conor Lynch was running on city streets around 3:30 p.m. Tuesday with teammates near Woodman Avenue and Addison Street. Most of the runners crossed the street on a green light. However, witnesses say Lynch, who was trailing behind the runners, may have attempted to cross the street in a crosswalk after the light turned red. He was struck by a Hyundai Santa Fe sport utility vehicle driven by 18-year-old Moran Biton, police said. Had the 18-year old driver not panicked and left the scene she probably woudn’t be in any trouble at all since it appears the runner tried to cross against the light. But leaving the scene of an injury accident, even if it’s not the driver’s fault, is a felony. Stupid mistake. Around here I see kids running all the time, often on busy streets. During cross country season there will sometimes be large groups of kids running along the major roads. Some PE classes also send kids out along the local roads. It’s an accident waiting to happen.

A month ago, CBS News hired ex-Bill Clinton and Al Gore campaign operative Jamal Simmons, a self-described “strong supporter of Barack Obama's campaign,” as political analyst, and Tuesday night the CBS Evening News paired him with the more sober in-house analyst John Dickerson. As a result, viewers heard a rational look at the political landscape from Dickerson paired with Democratic talking points, in the guise of political analysis, from Simmons, but not balanced by any GOP veteran tearing down Democrats. Simmons turned polls showing impending big Democratic losses into a way to deliver anti-Republican demagoguery, as he charged “voters are starting to figure out that if Republicans win, they're going to cut, you know, 21 percent out of education and borrow $700 billion from the Chinese to give tax cuts to rich people, and most voters don't want to do that.” After Katie Couric raised, as controversial, Christine O’Donnell’s accurate contention “separation of church and state” is not in the Constitution, Simmons took the opportunity to deride Republican candidates: “If you look around the country, not just Christine O'Donnell but Sharron Angle out in
