Birds Have ‘Blind Spot’ for Power Lines, Causing Fatal Collisions

Photo: Wikipedia , CC Not Adapted to This New Threat For most of their existence as a species, birds haven’t evolved in an environment where something like a power line could be in their flight trajectory. Because of this, they mostly look down while flying to find other birds, nesting areas, and places where they can feed. If there’s a tree or a mountain in front the bird and it is looking down, it’s going to see the trunk or the lower portion of the mountain; with power lines, unless it’s right at the pylon, there’s nothing under the lines to give… Read the full story on TreeHugger

There is a fine line between tasteful political comedy and crossing-the-line crudeness, and the Huffington Post’s new song “My Girl's A Republican” just leaped over that line. With lyrics such as “Dick Nixon sucking lips” and “she made her oil money last, and now I’m tapping it,” even the most liberal among us could agree that the attack on Republican women is downright revolting. Hailed as an “ode to right-wing ladies,” the three and a half minute song and video by Rap duo “It’s The Real” (and proudly displayed on the Huffington Post Web site) does nothing but smear conservative women like Christine O’Donnell, Michele Bachmann, and of course, Sarah Palin. The HuffPo write up on the “tribute to conservative women” song claims “it does a pretty solid job of both mocking and admiring right-wing conservatives.” (Video below the fold) read more

University of Minnesota Welcome Center Mixes New Tech With Old Building

All images credit Lara Swimmer and MS&R I am fond of repeating Steve Mouzon’s dictum that the greenest brick is the one that’s already in the wall . That’s why I was attracted to MS&R’ s welcome center for the University of Minnesota at Morris. It is a mix of preservation and restoration with a bright new redo and some clever use of new green gizmos. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

International Space Station marks ten years of continuous habitation

It’s not often we get to mark a ten year anniversary… in space, but that’s just what the International Space Station is now celebrating. It was ten years ago today that the first crew arrived for a stay on the space station (which itself had been in orbit for two years prior), and it has been continuously occupied by humans ever since. It’s also, of course, expanded considerably during that time period, and seen its share of bumps along the way , but it’s not ready to de-orbit any time soon. The anniversary also marks the halfway point of the ISS’s expected lifetime and, if past history is any indication, it could well end up getting an extension beyond that — even if it’s with an all-robot crew . Hit up the source links below for NASA’s own retrospective on ten years of life on the station. Cher: Sarah Palin is a ‘Dumb Woman,’ Jan Brewer Shouldn’t Even Handle ‘A Remote Control’

In the new issue of Vanity Fair, legendary singer Cher dished about her feelings on Sarah Palin and Arizona governor Jan Brewer. And – surprise! – she’s not a fan of either. “I got so obsessed with [C-SPAN] that it was kind of interfering with my life,” Cher told the magazine. “Sarah Palin came on, and I thought, Oh, f—, this is the end. Because a dumb woman is a dumb woman.” The “I Got Your Babe” singer was even harsher on Brewer, who spearheaded the recent immigration crackdown in Arizona. “She was worse than Sarah Palin, if that is possible,” said Cher. “This woman was like a deer in headlights. She’s got a handle on the services of the state, and I would not let her handle the remote control.” read more

Samsung Continuum turns up on Verizon’s holiday site

Verizon still hasn’t officially announced that it will be carrying the Samsung Continuum Galaxy S phone, but that doesn’t seem to have stopped it from including the phone on it’s new holiday website — ’tis the season for being generous, after all. Unfortunately, any word on pricing or a release date will apparently still have to wait for that formal announcement, which we assume will be coming any day now — previous leaks have pointed to a November 11th release for the dual-display phone. Turn Your Roof Into a Neighborhood For Needy Birds

Photos via Klaas Kuiken We’ve heard of white roofs to deflect heat, solar-paneled roofs to produce energy, and even green roofs to add a touch of nature to our abodes — but one designer has created a roof that can benefit the environment in yet another way, by offering houses to birds atop our v… Read the full story on TreeHugger
