Ireland parliament approved on Wednesday legislation which will give the government extensive powers to restructure the banking sector, including the power to impose losses on subordinated bondholders and transfer deposits. Opposition politicians have warned that the law, which fulfils Ireland's pledge to overhaul its banking system as part of an 85 billion euros EU/IMF bailout package, will turn Finance Minister Brian Lenihan into a…

After collecting over 762,000 sneeze-worthy anecdotes among the module-toting teachers and teens, Stanford researchers ran 788,000 simulations charting the path the virus might take and methods the school might try to keep it in line. Sadly, the scientists didn’t manage to come up with any easy answers, as virtual vaccination seemed to work equally well (or poorly) no matter who got the drugs, but that if only we could actually monitor individuals in real life as easily as in a study, prevention would be much easier. But who will bell the cat, when it’s so much less political to ionize ? Scientists attempt to predict flu spread, give ZigBee radios to 700 high school students originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 20 Dec 2010 08:43:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds . She didn’t say what she’d prefer for parties this time of the year to be named. “Winter solstice party”? Just plain old “holiday party”? Or a “seasonal gathering”? Totenberg’s bashfulness came as she explained how the failure of Congress to pass an annual budget has left federal workers in limbo: Well, these agencies, including the Defense Department, don't know how much money they've got and for what. And I was at – forgive the expression – a Christmas party at the Department of Justice and people actually were really worried about this. So, what did Totenberg mean by “forgive the expression”? Watch and judge for yourself. ( Audio : MP3 clip ) read more

Girls who walked or biked to school in a recent Spanish study performed better at school in verbal and math skills then their cohorts who rode the bus or rode a car, according to this story from Reuters News . And the longer the girls in the study commuted, the better they performed – regardless of how much other exercise and sports activity they reported. What is interesting is that improved test results didn’t hold… Read the full story on TreeHugger
