Anger rises as travel havoc snarls Britain, Europe

GREGORY KATZ Associated Press= LONDON (AP) — Frustrated travelers in Europe expressed fury Monday at transportation officials’ inability to clear snow and ice from planes, runways and high-speed train tracks, failings that have caused holiday travel chaos and fears that many will not get home in time for Christmas. The continent’s worst bottleneck was London’s Heathrow Airport, where thousands of travelers were stranded overnight as flight cancellations increased even as other major European airports resumed normal operations after several days of four weather delays. London Mayor Boris Johnson summed up the exasperation as Britain suffered another day of travel setbacks. “It can’t be beyond…

It took ten years , but they finally passed the act that will allow community radio to get a foothold in the community. This is really exciting, and just about anyone who can scrape together a few thousand bucks can pull it off: Little noticed but extremely important to progressives, on Saturday afternoon Congress also passed the Local Community Radio Act.This legislation opens up radio spectrum to hundreds, if not thousands, of local independent radio stations (also known as LPFM). Its passing will bring new choices and voices on the radio dial nationwide, but is especially relevant to a broadcast area reaching 160 million people who lived in areas where these stations had previously been barred from local airwaves. Anyone tracking the rise of radio personalities like Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Michael Savage understands the primary political significance of gaining access to spectrum. With the opening of the airwaves to LPFM stations, progressives can gain a small but consequential spot on the radio dial. The challenge now is to organize local groups to gain access to licenses. Designer Lee Leong Chye of the Little Thoughts Group has designed this homage to the humble kerosene lantern, beautifully made of wood and powered by cranking the pump in and out. Hopefully the light from the LED is kinder than what comes out of the real thing, a harsh bright light that Yanko describes as “loving glowing glowing love”- clearly the writer has never seen one. … Read the full story on TreeHugger

Xerox shows off Smart Document Review table, a Surface that sifts through billions of docs (video)

You have a lot of documents you’ve acquired over the years, hundreds or thousands in some semblance of order thanks to folders and whatnot. Now, imagine taking the output from hundreds or thousands of others, all with their own ideas about organization, and finding only those pages relevant to a certain topic. That’s what legal aides have to do in cases where a major corporation is being investigated, and we’re thinking that’s a major target market for Xerox ‘s Smart Document Review. It’s a prototype touchscreen table that enables users to collaboratively filter documents, starting by indexing a giant pool and then allowing for the creation of “magnets” that contain keywords or other heuristics and dynamically pull out matches, all happening courtesy of animations that look only slightly less sophisticated than those seen in Hackers . Search results can then be dumped to a thumb drive. The prototype table dates back to earlier this year, but Xerox is now making them available as part of a pilot program exclusively for trendy law offices with unisex bathrooms.
