Prospect of no female Lib Dem MPs

• All women could lose their seats, says Fabian Society • Report suggests grandees give up safe constituencies The Liberal Democrats face the prospect of having no female MPs after the next election if their current poll ratings continue, the Fabian Society says. The society, affiliated to the Labour party, suggests radical moves for the Lib Dems such as making former leaders Charles Kennedy and Sir Menzies Campbell offer their safe seats to female candidates to reverse the trend. Only seven of the 57 Lib Dem MPs are female and in the last couple of months the party has created a “leadership programme” to ensure more women and members of ethnic minorities become MPs. A list of 50 candidates – 50% of them women and 30% ethnic minority – will get strong support to stand for some of the party’s safest seats. The party will not introduce all-women or all-black shortlists since its structure means it cannot impose decisions on local parties; but in recognition of the scale of the task, its central office will stipulate that if one candidate from the leadership programme is asked to stand, the local party must also ask another from the programme. Lib Dems say this provides a high chance that there will be 50 more candidates from under-represented groups at the next election than would otherwise be the case. In the Fabian Society report, its authors, Sunder Katwala and Seema Malhotra, show how the Lib Dems’ seven female MPs include five in the party’s 10 most vulnerable seats. There are no women in the party’s 20 safest seats – those with the largest majorities. The Fabian Society points out that the majority of all seven women Lib Dem MPs put together (17,224 votes) is only just greater than that of Nick Clegg in Sheffield Hallam (15,284). Most vulnerable is Lorely Burt in Solihull, whose majority is only 175 votes, followed by Annette Brooke in Mid Dorset (269) Katwala and Malhotra write: “If the current polls were even half right, not a single Lib Dem woman MP would survive. An early election where they held four out of five seats (a result they would bite your arm off for) could mean 43 men and two women.” They add: “It seems almost certain that the party’s currently poor 12% of women MPs will now fall to below where the Liberals were in the 1930s (one out of 10).” In his speech to the Lib Dems’ spring conference in March, Nick Clegg read out all the Lib Dem ministers in government, and asked the audience: “Do you notice something about that list? There are only two women on it. Our party is too male and too pale. I wish it wasn’t the case, but it is.” The report suggests that women in the Lib Dems face a “toxic triple cocktail”. If they fail to recover in the opinion polls, then both women and men will lose out. But the party’s unpopularity is made worse by the planned shrinking of the Commons from 650 MPs to 600, which will see the smallest new intake in any postwar election, slowing down progress because new intakes have tended to have a better gender balance than the whole house. “The Lib Dems would have expected to select six or seven new candidates to replace retiring MPs; this will probably now fall to two or three – even if all current seats were deemed winnable.” The third factor is that woman are often selected in less safe seats compared with men and “are proportionately more electorally vulnerable than their male counterparts”. The authors propose that the party drop its opposition to all-women shortlists for the two or three constituencies where it is certain to replace a sitting MP. They also suggest encouraging a “retirement or two” and, failing that, a swap: “Tinkering will merely limit the damage unless the Lib Dems respond to new boundaries by reopening every selection, with the aim that women candidates should contest a quarter of the party’s 20 most defendable seats, rather than none of them. “This might mean Sir Ming Campbell or Charles Kennedy swapping their safe seats with a colleague to defend a marginal. If this seems too difficult or painful, the party should admit it’s willing to run the risk of only electing men in 2015.” A Lib Dem spokesman said: “We have made steps towards positive discrimination in favour of women and ethnic minority candidates because we are the most under-representative party.” However, the spokesman added that “much more must be done”. Research fellow charged with possession of drugs after teenager is taken ill at house party in west London A university academic has been arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs following the death of a teenage girl who became ill at a party. Brian Dodgeon, a research fellow at the University of London’s Institute of Education, is believed to have been held over the death of Isobel Clara Reilly, 15, of Acton, west London. Officers were alerted by London Ambulance Service at 4.10am on Saturday after she took ill at a house in Barlby Road in north Kensington. Isobel was taken to hospital, but died later that morning. A 60-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of drugs and child abandonment, the Metropolitan police said. He was bailed to return at a date in June. Isobel’s death is currently being treated as unexplained, but officers are examining whether drugs played a role in her death. “We await the results of the postmortem examination,” a police spokesman said. A 14-year-old girl, believed to be Dodgeon’s daughter and two boys, both aged 14, were also taken to hospital as a precaution. Last night they remained there under observation. Detective Sergeant Neil Philpott appealed for more information from guests who attended the party. “We believe the victim was taken ill during a party at the address in Barlby Road,” he said. “We are yet to make contact with all those who attended and would ask anyone who was present at any point during the evening to make contact with officers.” Isobel’s family said last night they and their daughter’s friends were “devastated and heartbroken” about her death. “We hope that if anything positive comes from this dreadful event, it is that others will make the right decisions to be safe and well in the future,” they said in a statement. They appealed for privacy, and also for anyone who had any information concerning Isobel to contact the police. Tony Ryan, headteacher of Chiswick Community School, where the teenager attended, described her as an “extremely popular girl”. “Her tragically early death is devastating news to everyone associated with the school and all our thoughts are with her family at this time,” he said. Franklin Graham Claims Government Stepped Into Churches’ Role Caring For Poor And Needy

Click here to view this media I can’t help wondering why Franklin Graham isn’t preaching an Easter Sunday revival instead of showing up on Christiane Amanpour’s show to make political statements, or to be more accurate, pronouncements. Some pronouncements, however, should not be allowed to stand unchallenged, and the following is one of them. AMANPOUR: We in this country and around the world are living in very dire times right now. Dire financial times, economic crisis, the gap between rich and poor is growing, not only here, but all over the world. What can the church do to fill that gap and to step into that gap? GRAHAM: Christiane, a hundred years ago, the safety net, the social safety net in the country was provided by the church. If you didn’t have a job, you’d go to your local church and ask the pastor if he know somebody that could hire him. If you were hungry, you went to the local church and told them, “I can’t feed my family.” And the church would help you. And that’s not being done. But the government took that. And took it away from the church. And they had more money to give and more programs to give, and pretty soon, the churches just backed off. And as a result, now you have generation after generation of pastors in churches that have not done that. And you would have to teach them again how to do it. Well, Reverend Graham, that is somewhat true but mostly not , because of course, churches rely upon the gifts of their congregation. Churches, like everyone else, suffered the effects. Many had debt obligations on their church buildings and were forced into default as offerings fell away, causing them to have to close the doors entirely. The depression had a devastating effect on the Churches as well as on the nation. In the optimistic flush of the ‘20’s many congregations had built new edifices far too large and expensive. When the depression hit, they found themselves unable to pay. Most carried their huge debts; a few rejected their obligation, thus bringing shame on the Christian Church. Colleges and publishing houses, missionary enterprises, and the social work of the Churches were all hard hit by the depression. Many an institution of the Church lost its endowment in the financial crash and had to close or had to drastically cut back its activities. In 2008, everything old is new again . The 20th annual study by Empty Tomb Inc. reaffirmed a “long-term turning inward of congregations” exhibited by a dwindling share of church donations spent on benevolence and evangelism. It also found a dip in money given to churches during the 2008 recession, even while donations to religious organizations overall increased. enlarge But of course, there were reasons why those offering plates were a little emptier, and not just because of massive unemployment. While there was some resurgence of piety among the lower classes (which manifested itself in an increase in the strength of religious fundamentalism during this decade) most middle and upper class individuals, remained unmoved even though they too may have suffered from the Depression. This cover plainly represents how the upper classes during the 1930′s continued to pay little attention to religion during this decade. The tip of a hat by the dead rich gentleman being rushed up to heaven shows the only tacit attention which such individuals, often caught up in the business world, paid to matters of religion. It’s no different today. Giving is carefully structured and often targeted. Giving by wealthy conservatives to religious organizations tends to be oriented toward overseas missions, even in desperate financial times here. For those who do focus giving toward religious organizations, it tends to be of an amount that isn’t even close to what’s needed to help people on the streets. Graham rewrites history in this segment to leave viewers with the impression that churches were handling everything just fine until FDR’s government came and snatched that responsibility away. They weren’t. In Colleen McDannell’s book Picturing Faith: photography and the Great Depression , two paragraphs in chapter 5 give a look inside the evangelical churches serving the poor: “I’ve had two dark rainy days on which it was impossible to work outside so, I did a pretty complete story on the City Mission, community chest financed and operated by a Baptist minister who is quite a little stinker.” John Vachon was photographing in Iowa, and in April 1940 he was in Dubuque. “It really breaks my heart to hear this little Baptist say, ‘all right men, upstairs to bed’ after the hymns had been sung,” he wrote to Stryker. “They go up, fumigate their clothes, take showers, and go to bed about 8:30.” The only Catholic to work for the Historical Section, and probably the only photographer who went ot church every Sunday as a child, Vachon did not take the evangelical tone of the charity very seriously. “The first night I sat through the services and raised my hand on the third call that yes I wanted to be saved. I never realized before what a lousy situation it is to have ‘charity’ operate this way. ” The “lousy situation,” however, was interesting enough to prompt Vachon to return one more day. “I am going back once more to get shots of children coming to get pails of the stew that’s left over,” he explained to his boss. A few days later, Stryker dashed off a letter in support of his young clerk. “The City Mission story sounds good. I hope your pictures portray the real character of the Baptist minister. I know the type. Will save my comments about them until you get back.” This is the church of Franklin Graham. The authoritarian, evangelical church that calls for conditions upon the charity he extols as being stolen from the church. My point here is not to say that all churches are failures. Not at all. Many are working toward social justice and a more fair, just, compassionate America . But Franklin Graham’s vision is one where we are pushed back to the days of horses, buggies, tent revivals and a government who does not exist to serve the people governed.

Glenn Beck’s final days at Fox: Kind of a pathetic spectacle, really

Click here to view this media After all the damage that Glenn Beck has inflicted on the national discourse in the past two-plus years at Fox News, no one will be missing him anytime soon. We especially won’t miss the nutty chalkboard rants, which really became so tedious that I don’t doubt they played a big role in his steep ratings decline. But since this is his last week at Fox coming up, he’s getting all nostalgic and trying to sum it all up for us, his loyal viewers. He seems to be trying to ball it all up at once, as he did Friday with a session that included one of his fake “town hall” audiences, which he then tried to gin up into an angry mob by telling them that their way of life was going to be destroyed by a conspiracy of secret radicals in the Obama administration. Oh, and Obama is just another Octavian, according to Beck: conspiring to destroy democracy so that he could assume dictatorial powers. It’s kind of pathetic, actually, because at this point it’s just so much hot air escaping into the ether: irrelevant and insignificant.

Welcome To The Danger Zone

Every divorce has a danger zone. That period of time when things can go horribly, horrifically, tragically wrong. In those cases where the woman has come to the point of no return, wants out of the marriage and demands a divorce is usually her time in the danger zone. Her husband’s immediate reaction can cause a host of emotions; not the least of which is fear that he may become physically violent. And those initial emotions can drive a divorce in unforeseen directions. But for men, the danger zone they experience is much farther down the divorce path. And it doesn’t come suddenly but instead builds up slowly over time. It comes at the point when emotional exhaustion is reached and he has realized the woman he married is not the woman he is divorcing. It comes when she has worn him down with endless delays in court and hammered him in front of the judge about how she’s “afraid of him” with vague references that are as flimsy as wet toilet paper. All the game playing with the children’s visitation time, the parental alienation she may be indulging in and the overprotective mother act that makes it look like he can’t care for his own child has him gobsmacked…and vulnerable. It takes just four words for me to know a man is in the “Danger Zone.” He just has to say one, specific phrase and I know that I have to launch into my role as coach, cheerleader, personal therapist, life coach, dating coach, financial advisor and spiritual support system for a brother who has been beaten and battered by the words and games of his soon-to-be-ex. Once I hear the four words, I know that we are on the brink of defeat. He’s about to give in and lose his past, his present and most of his future. When he says the “Danger Zone” words, he’s in real trouble. What are the words? “I just want out.” That’s it. That’s all it takes for me to know that I have a client who is about to sign his life away. I’ve seen it hundreds of times. She works him over emotionally for months, in some cases, for years. By the time he’s in my office, he’s lost birthdays, holidays, countless weekends and midweek dinners with his kids. He’s answered hundreds of inane questions, and produced mountains of financial documents. It’s at this point, when he’s reached the end of his emotional rope, where he makes spectacularly bad decisions. He will agree to a lifetime of non-modifiable spousal support and is as flexible to her as a pair of pantyhose. “I just want out” is the dying refrain of a man in a divorce. It’s painful to watch. I spend hours talking beaten-down men off the cliff of “I just want out.” I remind them that the deals they make today have to be paid tomorrow. I tell them to go to Vegas, get drunk, do anything to get some distance and all will be better in the morning. Keeping a man’s spirits up during the lengthy process of a contested divorce is a major role and purpose for a lawyer like me. My job is not just to fight for the visitation schedule that a father deserves but to keep his resolve to leave the marriage with as much money as she gets. It’s my job to create an exit plan for the spousal support and to have my eye on his future. Because in the fog of war – he can’t see. I remind my men that in a few months they’ll lose the “Partner Pudge” they put on, he’ll be out in a bar or hanging out with friends, and the game will have changed from when he was married. Frequently my pep talks work. In those cases, when I’ve used every argument I have to keep him from giving up and I succeed, invariably he comes back to me in a year and thanks me. He tells me I was right. He’s realized that there are many more women out there for him, that he has found a way to make the time with his children count, and he’s grateful that he didn’t sign his life away because he was thinking “I just want out.” Guiding a man through the “Danger Zone” is difficult, painful, and frequently frustrating. And oftentimes no matter how much I warn a client what may be in his future, many feel that it won’t happen to them. Maybe it’s a ‘guy” thing. The reality is that we all want to throw up our hands sometimes and scream, “Enough!” But in the all too frequently rough and tumble world of divorce, where words slice like daggers and false statements are often viewed as fact, that surrender flag a man waves can actually be the start of another battle. David T. Pissara’s book, A Man’s Guide To Divorce Strategy, can be purchased here.
