Insert Coin: Prosthetic eye digital camera (video)

In Insert Coin, we look at an exciting new tech project that requires funding before it can hit production. If you’d like to pitch a project, please send us a tip with “Insert Coin” as the subject line. Nobody with binocular vision would consider replacing a functional natural eye with a digital camera . But Tanya Vlach’s vision is monocular, after losing one of her eyes in a car accident. A matching ocular prosthesis gives the San Francisco native a normal appearance, but it’s unable to provide vision — in its current state, at least. Vlach turned to Kickstarter for donations that would allow her to install a unique, waterproof in-eye camera, theoretically capable of transmitting 720p HD video wirelessly to a mobile app, and zooming and capturing still images using a blink-activated sensor. Features also on the wish list: facial recognition, a dilating pupil that changes based on light, infrared / UV capture, and geotagging , just to name a few. The embedded camera obviously can’t replace a natural eye, but it certainly brings more life to an otherwise useless cosmetic shell. Vlach needs to raise $15,000 by August 3rd in order to achieve her funding goal and commission an engineer to design the new optic. Donations of less than $5,000 will be rewarded with a variety of small-ticket items, while a pledge greater than that amount will net the donor their very own “souvenir eye camera” — whatever that means. You can jump past the break for a video explanation from Tanya, who may very well be on her way to being the first human to use a digital pseudo-bionic eye. Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso wins thrilling British Grand Prix

• Alonso enjoys first victory of the season at Silverstone • Vettel ends up second while Button fails to finish Fernando Alonso won his first grand prix for nine months with the 27th victory of his career as Ferrari continued to improve their competitiveness. It was a memorable way for Ferrari to celebrate the 60th anniversary of their first win here. It was the Spaniard’s first victory since his win in South Korea in October last year. But the real thrills were taking place behind him, with Red Bull team-mates Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber battling it out for second place and Lewis Hamilton coming under increasing pressure from Felipe Massa. Vettel, who still managed to increase his lead in the world championship table by three points to 80, did hold off Webber to take second. But despite saying in the past that the two drivers were free to race, Red Bull gave Webber the chilling message on the last lap: “Mark, maintain the gap.” Webber though, appeared to ignore the message and continued to race Vettel until the end of the race. Hamilton had a brilliant afternoon. Starting in 10th place, with a car well off the pace over the weekend, he charged up the field, overtaking Paul di Resta to take sixth place, before moving up to fifth by passing the other Briton in the race, his team-mate Jenson Button. He eventually finished fourth. But it was another difficult day for McLaren. Button, making his 12th attempt to win a podium place in the British Grand Prix, failed to finish, retiring after a pit-stop mistake resulted in his front right wheel almost falling off. Hamilton only just finished the race, running out of fuel and having to slow down as Massa closed on him. Hamilton was brilliant but his recent criticism of the team was justified. But the day belonged to Alonso. He said afterwards: “This is a very special day for Ferrari and I’m very happy. It means a lot to all the guys who work for Ferrari.” Formula One Fernando Alonso Ferrari Motor sport Paul Weaver guardian.co.uk

Under-fives should exercise for at least three hours a day, say experts

Swimming, ‘baby gym’ mats and walking part of routine journeys encouraged in first exercise guidance for under-fives Children under the age of five should exercise for at least three hours a day, new government guidelines will suggest. Babies should be taken swimming and play on “baby gym” mats while toddlers should walk for at least 15 minutes of routine journeys such as to nursery, chief medical officers will say. The exercise guidance, to be issued this week, targets under-fives for the first time. “For children that are not yet walking, there is considerable evidence that letting children crawl, play or roll around on the floor is essential during early years,” said England’s chief medical officer, Sally Davies. “Play that allows under-fives to move about is critical and three hours a day is essential,” she told the Sunday Times. “I think there are parents who are not aware how important it is for their children to be physically active for a minimum of three hours. Other parents are very busy and may not see how important it is to get that prioritisation and balance right.” According to NHS figures, nearly a quarter of children aged four and five are overweight or obese. Experts predict that by 2050 this could apply to 63% of children. Professor Fiona Bull, chair of the scientific committee behind the guidelines and co-director of the British Heart Foundation National Centre for Physical Activity at Loughborough University, said parents should “turn the TV off”. The advice follows warnings this month that England faces a liver disease “timebomb” because so many children are overweight. Professor Martin Lombard, national clinical director for liver at the Department of Health, said a culture of overeating was putting the lives of more than 500,000 young people at risk. George Will to Donna Brazile: Obama and Dems Have Kicked the Deficit Can So Much It’s ‘Can Abuse’

Democrat strategist and ABC contributor Donna Brazile on Sunday predictably blamed the current debt ceiling impasse on Republicans and their refusal to raise taxes. This led George Will to state what would be obvious to all media members if they weren't so in the tank for Barack Obama, namely that he and his Party have been kicking the deficit can down the road so long they're guilty of “can abuse” (video follows with transcript and commentary): CHRISTIANE AMANPOUR, HOST: Everybody knows that entitlements have to be in play as well, and if it hadn’t been for the hardball negotiations that the Republicans were doing, the President may not have come to even talking about entitlements. DONNA BRAZILE, DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST, ABC AND CNN CONTRIBUTOR: He put it on the table, the Republicans came into the room, got their appetizers and said, “You know what? Main course, we’ll just walk away.” Maybe tonight the President will serve dessert. It’s after six o’clock, George, I should be cooking. GEORGE WILL: Before we have a moratorium I hope on the can metaphor, let’s look at who’s been kicking the can down the road. Democrats started kicking the can down the road when they stopped writing budgets. The President kicked the can down the road by appointing a deficit commission. Then he kicked it again down the road by ignoring the deficit commission. Then he submitted a budget in February that no one on either side of the House would support that promised to increase the deficit. That’s a lot of kicking. That’s can abuse. Indeed it is, and if Congressional Republicans along with a GOP President had behaved this way for over two years, the media would be up in arms about it. Congressional Democrats have not proposed a budget since Obama's fiscal 2010 one was passed in April 2009. That's 27 straight months worth of can kicking right up to this debt ceiling showdown. It's been many decades since there's been an entire political party that has so abdicated its budget responsibility, a fact that seems lost on so-called journalists who are supposed to be exposing such hypocrisy rather than assisting its cover-up as well as its willing distortion of the truth so the blame can be diverted to the largely innocent. This would be laughable if the nation wasn't facing another financial crisis that will make the last one look like a simple bounced check. Sadly, this Marx Brothers movie we're watching is real, and the only ones laughing are the press as they pat themselves on the back for once again being able to convince so many people that one plus one doesn't equal two.

Chris Hansen, ‘To Catch A Predator’ Host, Caught Sexting: Report

This week in famous people sending dirty pictures to women who aren’t their wives, Chris Hansen reportedly texted and emailed explicit photos to his alleged mistress. Last week, the ‘To Catch A Predator’ host was allegedly caught cheating on his wife by a National Enquirer investigation. The tabloid leaked video footage that apparently documents his affair with Kristyn Caddell, a Florida NBC affiliate news reporter. Hansen and his wife have two children and live in Connecticut. From the Daily Mail: “The candid photos were said to have been emailed to his alleged mistress Kristyn Caddell, a 30-year-old Florida journalist, only days after his first sexual encounter with her.’ According to the Enquirer, the broadcaster sent her at least two explicit images from his cell phone.” Hansen is “terrified” that the pictures will end up online. “One of the images shows Chris standing in a hotel room in front of a large mirror. He’s wearing only a white bathrobe that’s completely open – showing off his entire chest and midsection – with one hand concealing his genitals,” a source told the Enquirer. Didn’t he learn anything from this guy?
