Each week Ross Rubin contributes Switched On , a column about consumer technology. Last week’s Switched On discussed how Lion’s feature set could be perceived differently by new users or those coming from an iPad versus those who have used Macs for some time, while a previous Switched On discussed how Microsoft is preparing for a similar transition in Windows 8. Both OS X Lion and Windows 8 seek to mix elements of a tablet UI with elements of a desktop UI or — putting it another way — a finger-friendly touch interface with a mouse-driven interface. If Apple and Microsoft could wave a wand and magially have all apps adopt overnight so they could leave a keyboard and mouse behind, they probably would. Since they can’t, though, inconsistency prevails. Yet, while the OS X-iOS mashup that is Lion exhibits is share of growing pains, the fall-off effect isn’t as pronounced as it appears it will be for Windows 8. The main reasons for this are, in order of increasing importance, legacy, hardware, and Metro. Heaven forbid any actual progressive Democrats are allowed on the air to voice their opinions on this debt ceiling debacle. Apparently Sen. Lindsey Graham isn’t ready to get behind these compromises being offered during the debt ceiling negotiations because they didn’t get Democrats to just dismantle all of our social safety nets immediately. Heaven forbid it appears these guys already got concessions on just about everything they wanted and that still isn’t good enough for them. They should have raised the debt ceiling before this new House of Representatives got into office so they weren’t put in the position of negotiating with these hostage takers in the first place because it looks like Lindsey Graham and the Republicans’ idea of “winning” is the complete destruction of our middle class in America, which has been obvious to a lot of us for a long time now. Transcript via This Week : AMANPOUR: Every Republican congressman from your own state voted against Speaker Boehner’s plan… GRAHAM: They did. AMANPOUR: … even though it did contain the balanced budget amendment. GRAHAM: Yeah. AMANPOUR: Do you think they’ll get behind this current framework that we’ve been describing? GRAHAM: You know, I don’t see many conservatives getting behind this, quite frankly, because you don’t overall. I’ve learned in politics the hard way, don’t oversell, and don’t tell people they should feel good when they have a reason not to feel that great. AMANPOUR: Will it pass? Will enough get behind it? GRAHAM: I think half the conference in the Republican House must vote for this. To President Obama, to David… STEPHANOPOULOS: Only half? GRAHAM: I think that’s the minimum, because I like John Boehner. Maybe he can get more, but it’s a $3 trillion package that will allow $7 trillion to be added to the debt over the next decade. (CROSSTALK) STEPHANOPOULOS: But you know the politics as well as I do… GRAHAM: So how much celebrating can you do about that? STEPHANOPOULOS: In order to get something like this through that does not include — it looks like this will not include revenue increases… GRAHAM: No revenue. That’s a win. STEPHANOPOULOS: I know where you stand on that. GRAHAM: That’s a win. STEPHANOPOULOS: That is a win. It would only get half? GRAHAM: My belief is, what do I tell people at home who say, what did you do about getting us out of debt? I slowed down how much debt you add. Instead of adding $10 trillion, we’re going to add $7 trillion. I slowed down the growth of government, but it still grows every year. For those who came out to vote in 2010 to say, get the size and scope of Washington changed in the new direction… (CROSSTALK) STEPHANOPOULOS: If you only get half, this could go… (CROSSTALK) GRAHAM: It doesn’t go in the new direction. STEPHANOPOULOS: With only half the Republican conference, this could go down. GRAHAM: Well, I’ll tell you, our Democratic friends provided no votes to John. There’s no plan by the president. Harry Reid’s plan is going nowhere. AMANPOUR: But you say there’s no plan, sir, but he’s moved so far, in fact, entirely to your side. GRAHAM: His — his — his rhetoric has moved. The reason everybody’s moved in town… AMANPOUR: But this is all spending cuts. GRAHAM: Well, let me tell you. There’s people in my party moved. There are people in my party who really are not that excited about cutting government… STEPHANOPOULOS: You’re not ready to vote for this, are you? GRAHAM: I can’t — from — from a big picture, I’m not ready to vote for this. And let me tell you why — excuse me, George — the bottom line here is, the people who got elected are not excited about being Republicans or Democrats, particularly on the Republican side. They’re excited about results. And it is fair to say, we’ve achieved a significant change in the way Washington works by paying for the debt ceiling increase and not passing it onto the credit card. We have not achieved entitlement change. We have not reduced the size and scope of government. We’re going in the wrong direction at a slower pace, and for a lot of people, that is not winning.

The young Sox fan, whose name is Dylan according to NESN, was at the game with his family and observing warm-ups when Red Sox ace Josh Beckett began walking towards him. Not wanting to miss the chance to get an up close picture of his favorite player, the young fan began snapping photos. Then without warning, Beckett handed him a ball. The gift came as such a surprise that Dylan immediately lost all control and burst into tears of joy. Rather than getting on the kid for being happy, many, such as Jeff Greenwell of Business Insider, recognize the moment as touching and appreciate the kind gesture made by the Red Sox hurler. Unfortunately the good karma from the deed didn’t rub off on Beckett, who ended up taking the loss against the Royals that afternoon.

Nurses, teachers and firemen actually pay a higher tax rate than some billionaires. It’s no wonder the American people are angry. Many corporations, including General Electric and Exxon-Mobil, have made billions in profits while using loopholes to avoid paying any federal income taxes. We lose $100 billion every year in federal revenue from companies and individuals who stash their wealth in tax havens off-shore like the Cayman Islands and Bermuda. The sum of all the revenue collected by the Treasury today totals just 14.8% of our gross domestic product, the lowest in about 50 years. In the midst of this, Republicans in Congress have been fanatically determined to protect the interests of the wealthy and large multinational corporations so that they do not contribute a single penny toward deficit reduction. If the Republicans have their way, the entire burden of deficit reduction will be placed on the elderly, the sick, children and working families. In the midst of a horrendous recession that is already causing severe pain for average Americans, this approach is morally grotesque. It’s also bad economic policy. President Obama and the Democrats have been extremely weak in opposing these right-wing extremist proposals. Although the United States now has the most unequal distribution of wealth and income of any major industrialized country, Democrats have not succeeded in getting any new revenue from those at the top of the economic ladder to reduce the deficit. Instead, they’ve handed the wealthy even more tax breaks. In December, the House and the Senate extended President George W. Bush’s tax cuts for the rich and lowered estate tax rates for the wealthiest Americans. In April, to avoid the Republican effort to shut down the government, they allowed $38.5 billion in cuts to vitally important programs for working-class and middle-class Americans. Now, with the U.S. facing the possibility of the first default in our nation’s history, the American people find themselves forced to choose between two congressional deficit-reduction plans. The plan by Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, which calls for $2.4 trillion in cuts over a 10-year period, includes $900 billion in cuts in areas such as education, health care, nutrition, affordable housing, child care and many other programs desperately needed by working families and the most vulnerable. The Senate plan appropriately calls for meaningful cuts in military spending and ending the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq. But it does not ask the wealthiest people in this country and the largest corporations to make any sacrifice. The Reid plan is bad. The constantly shifting plan by House Speaker John Boehner is much worse. His $1.2 trillion plan calls for no cuts in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and it requires a congressional committee to come up with another $1.8 trillion in cuts within six months of passage. Those cuts would mean drastic reductions in Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. What’s more, Mr. Boehner’s plan would reopen the debate over the debt ceiling, which is now paralyzing Congress, just six months from now. While all of this is going on in Washington, the American people have consistently stated, in poll after poll, that they want wealthy individuals and large corporations to pay their fair share of taxes. They also want bedrock social programs like Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid to be protected. For example, a July 14-17 Washington Post/ABC News poll found that 72% of Americans believe that Americans earning more than $250,000 a year should pay more in taxes. In other words, Congress is now on a path to do exactly what the American people don’t want. Americans want shared sacrifice in deficit reduction. Congress is on track to give them the exact opposite: major cuts in the most important programs that the middle class needs and wants, and no sacrifice from the wealthy and the powerful. Is it any wonder, therefore, that the American people are so angry with what’s going on in Washington? I am too. Mr. Sanders, an independent senator from Vermont, is a member of the Senate Budget Committee and the longest serving independent in congressional history. Cross-posted at The Wall Street Journal.

This latest bit of intellectual property beef centers on the online content provider’s alleged unlicensed use of Rovi’s electronic program guide technology. According to Reuters, the company, which currently powers the streaming likes of Blockbuster On Demand and CinemaNow, is seeking financial compensation for potential ” lost license revenue and treble damages,” potentially tripling any future settlement award. While Hulu has yet to issue a statement on the matter, we’d be willing to bet those takeover talks are taking a backseat until this gets sorted.
