We’re still trying to wrap our heads around yesterday’s sounding of what will most likely be the death knell for webOS. The fine folks over at The Next Web have offered some insight, and it seems that hardware was the problem. It’s no secret that the TouchPad was released with a single-core chip in an age of dual-core tablets and super phones. As we noted in our review , the device simply couldn’t keep up with the competition. According to TNW’s sources, developers actually managed to port webOS over to the iPad 2 for testing purposes, and it ran “over twice as fast.” It’s not terribly surprising that Apple’s dual-core A5 chip was able to outpace the single 1.2GHz core found inside the TouchPad, but It may seem strange that the 1.2GHz chip inside the TouchPad was so easily outclassed by the slower clocked A5, but Apple’s chip is sporting faster Cortex-A9 architecture, while HP relied on Qualcomm’s slower A8-based Snapdragon. It seems that the hardware constraints were ultimately what did in the Linux-based mobile OS. Update : This article incorrectly stated that the TouchPad shipped with a single-core processor. Attempted murder investigation launched after CCTV footage of Birmingham riot shows unarmed officers and a police helicopter being shot at New CCTV footage of the riots in Birmingham shows police officers and a force helicopter being shot at. The footage, which has been released by West Midlands police to encourage members of the public to come forward, shows a group of 30 to 40 young men rioting in the Newtown area of the city on the night of Tuesday 9 August. The force said the group, all masked and wearing black clothing, caused extensive damage to the Barton Arms pub in Newtown and the surrounding area. Police arrived at the scene at about 11.50pm, whereupon petrol bombs were thrown at a marked police car and 11 shots were fired at officers and a force helicopter. An attempted murder and arson investigation has been launched and officers have appealed for anyone with information about the attacks to contact them. A spokesman said a small amount of money was stolen from the pub, but the use of alcohol and petrol leads police to believe that the intention was to start a fire. Chief Constable Chris Sims said: “Releasing footage that is so disturbing in nature is an unusual step for us as a force, however, the potential for serious harm, or worse, in this incident has led us to this decision. “Eleven shots were fired at unarmed officers to enable disorder to continue, while petrol bombs were also thrown at officers who initially attended the scene. “This footage shows seemingly co-ordinated criminal behaviour with no regard for people’s lives, whether it be through the setting of a fire, shooting at unarmed officers or shooting at the police helicopter. “This investigation is being treated as attempted murder and arson, and I am only thankful that this is not a murder inquiry. “This was not only police officers’ lives that were put at risk, but also members of the public who may have been passing by.” UK riots Birmingham Gun crime Crime David Batty guardian.co.uk

Mary Curnock Cook, head of Ucas, said the Ucas website received 644 hits per second on Thursday. She told BBC News that 65,000 people who have already applied for places are still awaiting decisions from universities, while 62,000 places remain. “The total number of applicants was up by about 1% this year, so it is more than ever before,” she said. Clearing matches students who did not get the grades they needed, or who turned down offers or received none, to courses with vacancies. “The number in clearing is a self-balancing figure so as that goes down that is a good thing because it means that more people have been placed through the main scheme in choices they have been considering for a number of months,” said Curnock Cook. A-Level results were published on Thursday and some students will now drop out and not enter clearing. The overall A*-E A-level pass rate rose to a record 97.8%. More than 250,000 students received their results on Thursday.
