Chumby 8 announced: like a Chumby, but more normal (hands-on with video!)

The original plush Chumby will always hold a special place in our hearts, but let’s be real: the average human doesn’t know what to do with a plush, huggable touchscreen that runs Flash Lite . The new Chumby 8 — leaked not long ago — is now official, featuring a revamped user interface that allows you to access music from the home screen, manage apps without using the web-based portal, and use internet radio stations as alarm sounds. Where does the “8″ in the name come from, exactly? That’d be the 8-inch 800 x 600 resistive touchscreen, a heck of a lot bigger than the 3.5 inches on that Chumby One you’ve got kicking around. The core of the Chumby 8, of course, remains the Flash Lite-based apps, and those remain unchanged and totally compatible so that you’ve got access to the existing lineup of 1,500-plus options. You’ve got a pair of USB ports, a stereo headset jack, and both CF and SD slots for powering your little desk-dwelling sidekick with media of your choosing. No word on pricing or availability, but it looks like Chumby will be offering these to third parties looking to customize and deploy or resell them — so our dream of an Engadget-branded photo frame might yet become a reality. Follow the break for our video hands-on! Gallery: Chumby 8 announced: like a Chumby, but more normal Continue reading Chumby 8 announced: like a Chumby, but more normal (hands-on with video!) ASUS tablet lineup preview: Slider, Transformer, MeMO, and Slate EP121 go wild (with video!)

We just played with A SUS whole new tablet lineup , which is truly impressive not only in scope, but also for the fact that ASUS didn’t just pick a few capacitive screen sizes and call it a day. Each of the four tablets (three Android-based Eee Pads and one Windows-based Eee Slate) has its own “twist” on what’s come to seem traditional in modern day tablets, while also maintaining significant hardware and screen quality. We’re not crazy about the ‘MyWave’ ASUS software skin on its Android models, but they at least seem serious about providing UI and apps for the entire experience — they’re not kidding around, is what we’re saying. We’ve got a ton of pictures and impressions, so follow after the break as we break it all down! Update: We’ve added video as well. You’d be a fool not to click. Weekday Vegetarian: Miso Soup with Rice and Poached Egg

Photo: Kelly Rossiter A website I follow called The Kitchn is doing a series on soups this week and there are lots of interesting looking things there, but today miso soup with a poached egg caught my eye. Of course, their recipe called for making dashi first, but I muddled though just using water because I didn’t want to … Read the full story on TreeHugger

OpenPeak debuts OpenTablet 10 with transflective display

We’re still waiting for OpenPeak’s OpenTablet 7 to be released, but the company’s now already moving on to bigger and potentially better things — it’s just announced the Atom-based, Android-running OpenTablet 10. In addition to being larger, the screen is also of the transflective variety, and it’s built from Gorilla Glass so it’ll hold up to some abuse while you’re using it outside. Otherwise, the one-pound, half inch-thick device packs dual cameras including a front-facing 720p cam, an HDMI out for 1080p video, a digital MEMS microphone, and optional 3G connectivity in addition to the standard WiFi. Still no word on pricing or a release date (or complete specs, for that matter), but we’re hoping to learn more when we get our hands on it. Full press release is after the break. DARPA awards BAE $8.4 million for BLADE wireless jamming initiative

DARPA’s new BLADE initiative doesn’t involve a blood sucking Wesley Snipes in a black leather trench coat, but we still think it’s pretty awesome. This BLADE stands for Behavioral Learning for Adaptive Electronic Warfare, and is focused on developing a system of algorithms that will automatically jam threatening wireless communications on the battlefield. DARPA gave $8.4 million to BAE Systems to implement the project, which will detect, analyze, and counter wireless communications, without human involvement. BLADE would also allow troops to overcome enemy counter-jamming measures and prevent the use of remotely controlled IEDs. The system is broken up into three central components: detection and characterization, jam waveform optimization, and battle damage assessment. DARPA expects BLADE software to be easily integrated into existing electronic warfare equipment, and should be ready for use in 2012 — still no word on a comeback for Mr. Snipes.
