He excoriated the Republican Party, smearing that the “haters” now “have a party to call all their own, the GOP.” Painting with a broad brush, Matthews mocked, “How did the right-wing fringe manage to take over the Republican Party?” He later repeated the talking point, wondering, “Coming up, the party with the fringe on top? How did the right-wing fringe get control of a major political party?” Of course, a 2006 Scripps Howard poll found that 50.8 percent of Democrats believed it was “somewhat” or “very” likely that George W. Bush knew in advance of the plot to murder 3000 Americans on 9/11. That would seem to indicate that there are a significant number of “haters” in the Democratic Party.

The birth certificate issue was a distraction, Obama stated, and the White House decision to release his long-form birth certificate was an attempt to re-focus national attention on the important issues, specifically his budget proposal. But which media outlets were most guilty of sustaining attention on the issue? On cable news, at least, the answer runs contrary to the usual media narrative. As it turns out, if you watched cable news during the week of April 11 through 17, when Obama was touting his budget, you were 35 times more likely to hear about the birther issue on CNN or MSNBC than you were on Fox News. The cable network most often railed against as the birther-enabler was least likely – by far – to report on the issue. Here's what Obama had to say during his post-birth certificate release press conference: …two weeks ago, when the Republican House had put forward a budget that will have huge consequences potentially to the country, and when I gave a speech about my budget and how I felt that we needed to invest in education and infrastructure and making sure that we had a strong safety net for our seniors even as we were closing the deficit, during that entire week the dominant news story wasn’t about these huge, monumental choices that we’re going to have to make as a nation. It was about my birth certificate. And that was true on most of the news outlets that were represented here. It's worth noting that the president's statement was factually inaccurate. The dominant news story during the week after his budget address was, as one might expect, the economy. In fact, the Obama administration only accounted for about four percent of media chatter during that week – behind unrest in the Middle East and natural disasters in Japan, in addition to the economy – and only a portion of that four percent had to do with his birth certificate. That data was gathered by the Pew Project for Excellence in Journalism, which also calculated those numbers for cable news coverage during that week. As quoted by Poynter : MSNBC including “The Ed Show,” “Hardball,” “The Last Word,” and “The Rachel Maddow Show” – 28% of airtime studied was devoted to the 2012 election – 10% of airtime studied was devoted to Obama – A subset of that Obama airtime was coded “citizenship and religion rumors” to include “birther” coverage, which was 92% of the Obama coverage Fox including “Special Report w/Bret Baier,” “Fox Report w/Shepard Smith,” “The O’Reilly Factor,” “Hannity” – 16% of airtime studied was devoted to 2012 election – 5% of airtime studied was devoted to Obama – A subset of that Obama airtime was coded “citizenship and religion rumors” to include “birther” coverage, which was 8% of the Obama coverage CNN including “The Situation Room,” “John King, USA,” “In The Arena,” and “Anderson Cooper 360″ – 11% of airtime studied was devoted to 2012 election – 5% of airtime studied was devoted to Obama – A subset of that Obama airtime was coded “citizenship and religion rumors” to include “birther” coverage, which was 100% of the Obama coverage. Ace crunched the numbers and found the following breakdown of birther stories as a percentage of total coverage for each cable news channel: – Fox News: 0.4 percent – MSNBC: 9.2 percent – CNN: 5 percent MSNBC devoted 23 times as much airtime as Fox to cover the birther issue. CNN devoted 12.5 times as much. So, as mentioned above, one was 35.5 times more likely to see a birther story on Fox's competition than on FNC itself. Ace also makes this key point: Now one can note, rightly, that MSNBC and CNN were always knocking, knocking down this issue. Fine. But who was distracted by this? If, as Obama says, this was a “distraction” from “real issues” and therefore “silliness” — which network(s) fed their partisan viewers a steady diet of this silliness? Which network fed them the least of it and, therefore, kept a better focus on things that were not silly? Of course even Fox News did its part to debunk the birther nonsense. “Special Report” conservative panelists, Charles Krauthammer and Fred Barnes, routinely opined on its absurdities. FNC contributor Karl Rove certainly did his part to combat the conspiracy theory. Unfortunately, simply by giving a megaphone to Donald Trump – the personality who undergirded much of the birthed coverage of late – news networks implicitly gave voice to the conspiracy theory. Simply ignoring the theory is generally the best way to combat it, and Fox led the field in that regard (on cable news, anyway). MSNBC, meanwhile, not only led the charge to promote the certificate hunt, it also promoted Donald Trump, host of sister network NBC's “The Apprentice” – a fact that recently earned the cable channel the ire of its own on-air talent .

Things turned ugly when “The Last Word” host refused to allow his guest to discuss President Obama's Selective Service certificate and Taitz responded by saying, “Your program is nothing but Obama propaganda machine” (video follows with commentary): This wasn't the first time an MSNBC host got heated with birthers today. Hours earlier, Chris Matthews got into a bit of a shoutfest with Tea Partier Judson Phillips and Arizona state Sen. Steve Smith about this very issue. This clearly demonstrates how MSNBC's Obama-lovers are just too close to this subject to be interviewing folks that still wonder if the President was born in Hawaii, especially queen birther Taitz. On the other hand, MSNBC could be looking to somehow keep this issue alive. As TVNewser reported Wednesday, MSNBC has practically spent more time on Trump and Obama's birth certificate than CNN and Fox combined. Maybe they're secretly sorry the President finally showed the nation his birth certificate. If they keep inviting on birthers in the coming days, we'll know won't we?

Just moments after calling House Speaker John Boehner (R-Oh.) and Congressman Paul Ryan (R-Wisc.) liars, the host of MSNBC's “Ed Show” misinformed his viewers about Medicare (video follows with transcript and commentary): ED SCHULTZ, HOST: Good evening, Americans. And welcome to THE ED SHOW tonight from 30 Rock, Rockefeller Plaza in New York City. We have got two big stories tonight. Just hold it a second. I was going to go to Kenosha, Wisconsin today but I couldn't because I am afraid I would have said something that would have gotten me in trouble. That's how passionate I am about this, because Paul Ryan is out there saying stuff that is not true. We`re going to get into his budget plan tonight. And John Boehner is flat out lying about taxing oil companies. Oh, this is a hot one. It's THE ED SHOW. Let's get to work. Moments later: SCHULTZ: Let’s look at this chart. This is how good it was for Medicare `50s, `60s, `70s, 1990, 2000. But now, we’re into the real red neck conservative years. They want to change everything. They want to get the New Deal. This is part of the New Deal they want to erase. Schultz clearly has problems with dates whenever he shows one of these charts: Medicare wasn't around in the '50s. It was signed into law by former President Lyndon Baines Johnson on July 30, 1965. This also means it wasn't part of Franklin Delano Roosevelt's New Deal. It was part of LBJ's Great Society. But since Ryan's 2012 budget proposal was released weeks ago, Schultz has regularly misinformed viewers about Medicare being part of the New Deal. As readers know, I have been making the case for some time that nobody at MSNBC is overseeing the falsehoods being spread by this man and others on this so-called news network on a daily basis. At the beginning of this very program, Schultz said, “I was going to go to Kenosha, Wisconsin today but I couldn't because I am afraid I would have said something that would have gotten me in trouble.” Shouldn't lying on national television get him in trouble, or do Comcast and General Electric, the joint owners of MSNBC, think that's okay?

I did not know that that race to the bottom would begin so quickly. One can disagree with the Tea Party… LAWRENCE O’DONNELL, HOST: Why did you see this coming? SMILEY: I saw it coming because it’s pretty clear given how the Tea Party has acted, given that Donald Trump is now playing to the worst in the Tea Party, that this would be possible. I don’t want to demonize or cast aspersions on the Tea Party broadly. I believe that there’s a certain angst that many people in that entity feel, and I share that angst about government. I don’t believe that it’s the solution to reduce government. Government does have a role to play. We’ve got to figure out, we can figure out and debate what that role is, but there have been semantics they’ve engaged in that made it clear to me: showing up at rallies with guns, and the Secret Service, you know, working overtime to protect this president. More threats against his life than any president in the history of the nation, indeed, presidents combined. So the evidence is pretty clear that they would do anything and say anything in order to make sure he does not get reelected. Of course, Smiley and his host chose not to address the evidence that they and most of the liberal media would do anything and say anything in order to make sure Obama DOES get reelected. This includes playing the race card whenever possible much as former President Bill Clinton accused the former junior senator from Illinois of doing in 2008. With this in mind, Smiley was 100 percent correct – and his side of the aisle will see to it that he ends up being right. For the next eighteen-plus months, just as the previous 51, whenever anyone anywhere expresses any criticism of Barack Obama, it will solely be because of the color of his skin. This is as obvious today as it was in February 2007 when Obama first threw his name into the presidential ring. We should sincerely thank Smiley for once again making this perfectly clear.
