Obama’s $73 Billion Myth

Author: Andrew Stiles When he’s not being disingenuous , he’s being utterly dishonest. Sen. James Inhofe still supporting Gbagbo in Ivory Coast and says he has proof election results are wrong

enlarge Sen. Jim Inhofe will never, ever, ever admit man-made emissions have anything to do with global climate change. Sen. Inhofe, the climate change denier is still claiming to have the knowledge that Gbagbo’s election was rigged and he called the French murderers for stepping in and trying to help sort the situation out. In a VOA interview, Republican Senator James Inhofe of Oklahoma says the Obama administration is backing the wrong side in the conflict and offered to provide evidence that it was mathematically impossible for Alassane Ouattara to win the disputed November presidential run-off vote over embattled President Laurent Gbagbo. “I do know that the French have always had pretty much control of the government in the Ivory Coast and that’s just the way the French operate, until President Gbagbo got there and, of course, the French have been running against him ever since that time. And, the current opponent, Ouattara, is no exception; he is the chosen one by the French and, quite frankly, they rigged the election,” said Inhofe. “The French have come in and I don’t know how many thousands of people they have killed because they won’t quantify it. They killed over a thousand in Deukoue, a town in the western part, and those were the people who are Gbagbo supporters. And they said that wasn’t us that killed the people, but it had to be because Gbagbo had no troops there. So it’s a reign of terror by Ouattara and it’s supported by the French…[I] am afraid I’m losing this one, but somebody has to tell the truth,” Inhofe said. Let’s look at Inhofe’s credibility when it comes to the matters pertaining to the military: Remember when Inhofe lied about military spending? INHOFE: Here we are in Afghanistan right now. We have our — our men and women in uniform in harm’s way. And we hear an announcement we’re cutting — and I would say gutting — our military . I’ve never seen a budget like this. We’re spending so much money. The Obama budget has increased welfare and all time we’re doing this, increasing all these welfares to an (INAUDIBLE), the only thing in the budget that’s being cut is military. Right here, things are going to increase. The numbers are going to increase and yet we’re cutting the budget. (END VIDEO CLIP) SANCHEZ: Cutting and gutting the military budget. Joining us now is Jim Arkedis. He’s the director of the National Security Project of the Progressive Policy Institute. You guys check on these things… JIM ARKEDIS, PROGRESSIVE POLICY INSTITUTE: We do. SANCHEZ: …to make sure the figures are right. So because you’re down now in the middle, I’m going to ask you the question — is Senator James Inhofe correct to say that President Obama is “gutting the U.S. military budget?” In fact, he goes on to say disarming America. ARKEDIS: Obviously, the senator’s words are pretty ridiculous. President Obama has proposed an increase, as the numbers you just rattled off suggested. And there’s absolutely no hint any time in the future that America’s military budget is going to be gutted or we’re going to be incapable of fighting the wars that — that we are in now and we will look to in the future — or have to in the future. Listen, I want out of our conflicts in the Middle East as much as the next guy, as you all know, but what Inhofe said about military spending is just a lie and ridiculous, so why are we to believe him now? And in the Ivory Coast, I’m backing the International community and what was a fair election that was validated by the UN. France is trying to end the hostilities in the Ivory Coast as the ex-leader, Gbagbo still refuses to surrender and remains holed up in his residence. Soldiers traded fire with guards at the residence where Laurent Gbagbo is ensconced, refusing to stand down as president, French officials said. France, the former colonial power, has called on Mr Gbagbo to resign after losing November’s election. Forces loyal to his rival, Alassane Ouattara, are besieging the residence. They were driven back when they tried to storm the site in a chic district of Abidjan on Wednesday, after talks on a cease-fire and Mr Gbagbo’s departure ran into difficulty. The incumbent president continues to insist he won the election, despite international recognition of Mr Ouattara’s victory. Mr Gbagbo says Mr Ouattara’s troops want to kill him but they say they have strict orders to capture him alive. Earlier in the day, The Japanese ambassador says mercenaries had taken over his house and used it as a launching point of gunfire while he hid in a safe room with several other people: Late on Wednesday, French helicopters moved in to evacuate the Japanese ambassador, Okamura Yoshifumi, and his aides after his home near the presidential residence was invaded by unidentified gunmen. They were taken to safety in a French military camp at Port-Bouet, south of Abidjan, the French embassy said. The French said they had acted after a request from Japan and the UN. During the operation, French forces exchanged fire with fighters defending Mr Gbagbo’s residence. S peaking before his rescue, Mr Yoshifumi told AFP news agency that a group of “mercenaries” had occupied his residence for five hours. While he and others sheltered in a safe room, the gunmen used his residence as a firing-point to launch rockets and fire machine-guns and cannon, he said. He said he had later found that four people employed at the residence, security guards and a gardener, had “vanished”, and there was “a lot of blood” in the house. It was not clear if the gunmen were part of the forces defending the nearby presidential residence or the attacking forces loyal to Mr Ouattara. France has troops in the country alongside UN peacekeepers, attempting to maintain security around Abidjan under the terms of a UN Security Council resolution. French Foreign Minister Alain Juppe said neither French nor UN troops were involved in the new offensive against Mr Gbagbo. The Red Cross says: “The population in Abidjan has been very hard hit” Hospitals have been over flowing with the wounded and bloodshed is being spilled as we speak and I do hope it ends as soon as possible. In any case, Alassane Ouattara has a very difficult road ahead if and when he takes over the torn country.

One of the nice things about Republicans when they get into positions of power is that they do our side favors by clarifying very quickly how extreme their ideas are. Newt Gingrich did it in 1995 with talk of sending kids to orphanages and cutting school lunch programs, along with his whining about having to sit in the back of Air Force One and that little shutdown-of-all-government thing. Now Paul Ryan, on behalf of the entire Republican Caucus in the House, is joining Scott Walker and other GOP Governors in doing the same. With his proposal, Ryan will radically cut and privatize Medicare, ending the guarantee of health care to our senior citizens; radically cut Medicaid and throw it into a block-grant program that will end any guarantee of coverage for the poor, people with disabilities, and many, many children; deliver breathtakingly large tax cuts to the wealthy while raising taxes for the middle class . As far as I can tell, more than 90 percent of his cuts impact either low-income people or senior citizens who are currently middle class but might no longer be if these Social Security and Medicare cuts go through. As to who benefits, while some things remain vague (like which middle-class taxes will have to go up to cut down the revenue losses because of lower taxes in the high-end brackets), it is likely that more than 90 percent of the benefits go to the very wealthy, who not only get to keep their Bush tax cuts but get some big and lucrative new tax cuts besides. As Citizens for Tax Justice notes , under Ryan’s proposal, the federal government would collect $2 trillion less over the next decade, yet require the bottom 90 percent to actually pay higher taxes. Ryan leaves a lot details out, but if you read in between the lines, it is clear that the reason certain details are missing is because of how awful they are. All the hue and cry about this year’s budget fight — whether or not we’ll have a government shutdown; whether we’ll cut $33 billion or $40 billion out of the remainder of this year’s budget — is a minor sideshow compared to the implications of the Ryan budget. Cuts to vital programs helping low and middle income Americans are morally wrong and bad public policy, but they only impact the next several months, and future Congresses can always (and relatively easily) boost spending numbers in important programs. But fundamentally restructuring programs- or more to the point, destroying them- is a lot harder to for future Congresses to change. Can you imagine any Congress in this dysfunctional era ever passing programs as strong and reliable as Medicare and Medicaid again? Paul Ryan, Scott Walker, Eric Cantor, and the Tea Party Republicans are, to their credit, being crystal clear about their philosophy and goals for the future: they hope to dismantle the last vestiges of the New Deal and Great Society programs which have benefitted the middle class and low-income Americans, and fund the parts of government they like — military spending and national security, subsidies to Big Oil, coal, and agribusiness companies, trade missions abroad, etc. — with taxes on the poor and middle class. With Ryan’s budget and Cantor’s classic quote the other day (“So 50 percent of beneficiaries under the Social Security program use those moneys as their sole source of income. So we’ve got to protect today’s seniors. But for the rest of us? Listen, we’re going to grips with the fact that these programs cannot exist if we want America to be what we want America to be.”) Republicans want to privatize or completely dismantle Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid; they want to wipe out the labor movement; they want to wipe out even minimal oversight of the financial system, worker safety, and the environment. They want to take us back to the era of Calvin Coolidge, when the advances of the last 80 years simply didn’t exist. Everything the last several generations of Americans have fought for and depended on would be gone. And so would the majority of the American middle class. Without Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, retirees would live in poverty, and family incomes would be wiped out trying to take care of parents, grandparents, and disabled family members. Without unions, wages and benefits would be ever more stagnant, or would decline in many sectors. Without student loans, fewer young and poor people would make it onto the first rungs of the ladder into the middle class. Without rebuilding our infrastructure and investing in our schools, fewer American businesses would be able to compete in the world economy. Without research and other government investments, the technological breakthroughs that have helped fuel our economic growth over the last 70 years would stop happening. And without some restraint on the power of multinational companies, our economy would be rocked by more financial collapses, and our pluralistic democracy will get more and more dysfunctional. The Ryan budget, Cantor’s quote, and Scott Walker’s war on unions are just the latest examples of radical conservatism’s war on the American middle class. Conservatives want a country where the wealthy and powerful are free to do what they want when they want. They want unbridled capitalism with all restraints taken off, the way America was in the 1920s — no, better make it the Social Darwinist 1880s, before Teddy Roosevelt came along and did too much trust-busting, food safety legislation, and national park creation. Conservatives want an America where there is complete “freedom” for the rich and powerful, but if you aren’t in that category you are on your own. This is what they “want America to be,” in Cantor’s words. This federal budget fight is part of the same battle with Republicans trying to destroy unions in the states, and part of the same battle homeowners across America are facing with reckless, power-hungry Wall Street banks. This battle is for the future of the American middle class, and we’d better win it.

Pete DeFazio Lights Into Republicans For Cutting Youth Programs

Click here to view this media For the first hour of the House of Representatives’ day, representatives make floor speeches of anywhere from one to five minutes. The speeches are a way of getting specific objections into the record outside of debate, or memorializing someone (like Geraldine Ferraro this week), or discussing issues. Mostly, they go unnoticed by the public and the press. It’s really too bad they’re ignored, because some of the best, most passionate, most fiery moments are made during these speeches, framing arguments and messages for both parties and moving forward agendas. Today’s winner of the best floor speech is Rep. Pete DeFazio (D-OR) for his ridicule of stupid GOP cuts to important and small programs in favor of defense spending and oil and farm subsidies. DeFazio zooms in on the YouthBuild America program, which takes kids who have problems, have dropped out of high school and trains them to build homes for underprivileged, low-income families. They get counseling, job training, and spend a year honing those skills. Here’s an excerpt from their fact sheet: YouthBuild addresses several core needs of low-income neighborhoods including: housing, education, employment, crime prevention, and leadership development. The ultimate goal of the YouthBuild program is to help young Americans transform their own lives and their roles in society by contributing to better outcomes for their communities. Now, we know why Republicans don’t like this program. They don’t like it because those now-trained, skilled young people will be able to have productive jobs and even (gasp!) join a trade union as they continue to hone their skills in the workplace. And of course, they really don’t like any low-income folks receiving government assistance with housing and the like when it doesn’t come as a selective gift from Those Who Have Money To Bestow As They Please. Remember the Republican maxim. Memorize it: Love the fetus; abandon the child. Full transcript follows: DEFAZIO: Lots of talk around here about millions, billions, trillions. But let’s just try and put a face on some of the cuts the Republicans put in HR1. I think one of the meanest of their cuts and the stupidest of their cuts is to eliminate a program called Youth Build. Now I’m sure most of them don’t know what it is, they’ve never met with the kids who come back here every year. This is a program that started in 1992 under George HW Bush. It’s a program that takes kids who have generally dropped out of high school, have problems with drugs, with alcohol, other things, but at some point decide they want to get straight and they want to do something better with their lives. So this program takes kids between 16 and 24 and helps them get their GED, gets them some counseling, gets them involved in peer groups, they learn leadership skills, teaches them how to build houses, and the houses they build are for low-income Americans. In the long term, we’ve found incredible results with this program. Last year — and these are almost 100% high school dropouts with problems — 78% of the kids completed the program. That’s pretty extraordinary. And now, after — when they leave the program — the longevity of the effect of this program? Seven years after completing the program 75% of the YouthBuild kids — kids who have problems with drugs, alcohol, homelessness, dropped out of high school, everything else — are either in college or employed in jobs earning more than ten dollars an hour. Now that’s a pretty darn good investment. Now what does this cost, and why would the Republicans zero it out? Well, it cost $102 billion dollars last year. For twenty thousand students. Now, we could I guess instead leave them in the street without their high school degree, hopeless, maybe they get back on drugs, maybe they’ll get in trouble, maybe we’ll put them in jail and then we’ll pay 30,000 dollars a year to pay for them in prison. $20,000 bucks for one year to get these kids straight and have them become productive members of our society. Zeroed out! By the Republicans. Now, it is a lot of money. That’s almost one hour of spending for the Pentagon across the river. Almost one hour. There’s no waste at the Pentagon, though. We’re not allowed to look at the Pentagon for waste. It’s almost two days — that’s a lot — of agriculture subsidies. Paying people not to grow things. So two days of paying people not to grow things or a year’s funding for a program that takes kids who have been in trouble but want to do better, want to learn some skills, want to be productive members of society, and helping them get a leg up. But no, in the Republican world, that’s wasteful spending. They zeroed out this program. I met with eight of these kids last week. I meet with them every year when they come back. I urged my Republican colleagues, for once I asked them if they’d seen the Republican member of my delegation. They said no, they met with a staff person, maybe an intern. Now Republicans can’t seem to be bothered but they should listen to these kids. There’s a lot of wisdom there and I think future leaders there. They’ve gotten their lives straight and they’ve gone through some hard times and we gave them a little help, yeah, one year. They get $500 a month while they’re in the program, while they’re building houses for low-income people, learning skills. And, as taxpayers in the future, they’ll pay that back pretty darn quickly. I wonder why they eliminated this program. First of all, I’m sure they don’t know what it is, they’ve never met with the kids, they don’t care. These aren’t people who go to the country club, after all. But secondly, probably because it’s housed in the Department of Labor and we hate anything on the Republican side of the aisle that has the word “labor” in it. God forbid that America should do things for working people in this country, or working people should be allowed the right to organize and have a better life. Well, this is a program that should be continued. It should, in fact, be enhanced. They had 19,000 kids who couldn’t get in the program last year. On the waiting list. 19,000. We should double the size of this program, maybe triple it. That would be a huge amount of money! That would be three hours of spending at the Pentagon. Or, almost a week of subsidies, paying corporations not to grow things on surplus lands. Boy, I guess we can’t afford that, can we? But we can’t cut the subsidies and we can’t look for waste at the Pentagon, but we can stick it to these kids. Good work, Republicans.
