Oil Spill Panel: Failures that Led to Disaster are ‘Likely to Recur’

Photo: US Coast Guard The presidential oil spill panel is gearing up to release its final report on the BP disaster , and it isn’t pulling any punches. Chief among the findings is that one of the primary causes of the spill were “bad management” practices from all the companies involved, and a lack of good government oversight on drilling procedures. Few of the panel’s findings will surprise anyone who has even cursorily followed the spill, but they serve as a final confirmation (and condemnation) that companies soug… Read the full story on TreeHugger

T-Mobile G-Slate revealed at CES press event

We knew it was coming , but we didn’t know what it would look like… or anything else besides 4G, Honeycomb , and an LG partnership, but at it’s press event here at CES, T-Mobile has finally revealed its G-Slate tablet. It looks like, well, a big screen, and we’re still working on getting more details, but for now these shots from the presser will have to suffice. Viewsonic introduces the first TV with Boxee (& Intel) inside

Say hello to the latest hardware news from Boxee , as Viewsonic was showing its new TV amongst its existing Android tablet lineup featuring the software and requisite Intel CE4100 processor built in. It didn’t appear to integrate live TV or other inputs into the Boxee software, instead of opting to run the software as its own app, offering a similar experience to the existing Boxee Box, minus the box of course. This TV should drop in “early Q2,” press release details are after the break. Audi rolls out updated hybrid e-tron Spyder at CES

It’s looking rather more polished since it first appeared the Paris Auto Show earlier this year, having been given a lovely coat of red paint (embarrassingly almost exactly the same hue as the Tesla Model S that’s here ) but keeping the some gorgeous, turbine-styled wheels. It’s the Audi e-tron Spyder, a hybrid with a twin-turbo V6 and dual electric motors as well capable of 0 – 60 times of 4.7 seconds, and we thought you might want to see. Still no price or availability, though. Audi Chairman Rupert Stadler also took the time to show off the company’s latest MMI system, with its character-recognizing touchpad, and also spoke a little bit about the future — vaguely, anyway. He refuted our thoughts on the car of the future, replacing the dash with a mobile device, saying that those devices are designed to draw your attention which is, of course, a bad thing while you’re driving. However, we can’t help but think that there are ways to eliminate that problem with the right software layer. Anyway, we’ll be speaking with Stadler a little later today and will be picking his brain a little bit more about this and other topics of the future. Dell Streak 7 official on T-Mobile’s 4G network, bringing dual-core Tegra 2 and Froyo

Dell’s Looking Glass tablet has just received its official papers, being dubbed the Streak 7 and packed off to T-Mobile HSPA+ network . Alas, unlike its fellow CES debutants from the likes of Motorola and LG , this slate only has Android 2.2 on board, no Honeycomb, but you do get a front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera, a Gorilla Glass-protected screen, 16GB of internal memory, and of course the greatness and glory of that 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor. T-Mobile retail stores and Dell’s direct online outlet should have the Streak 7 “in the coming weeks.” Full PR and an introductory video follow after the break. Fraser’s Penguins Offers a ‘Blue Marble’ View of Climate Change (Book Review)

Photo credit: Fen Montaigne In an age where information travels around the world in an instant—and moving people the same distance rarely takes more than a day—it’s easy to forget how foreign ideas of great scale and scope are to the human mind. While it’s easy for people to internalize and accept a concept like acid rain—specific emissions from factories in one place fall into the water downwind producing a measurable and nearly-immediate rise in acidity—it is much more difficult to grasp onto something like climate change, which is caused by actions around the world and has impacts measurable in decades,… Read the full story on TreeHugger

Watch the latest video at video.foxnews.com Republicans made many promises to their Tea Party base, and as you would expect they have already started backtracking on most of them. One was that amendments would be allowed to be added to bills and Greta Van Susteren was none too happy with Rep. David Dreier last night about it, as she immediately bit down on his neck over the broken promise. She then beat him up over not proposing a bill to repeal health care reform Greta: But you promised. This is what you promised so right out of the box you’re not doing it. Why don’t you do it? — Frankly, I’m not impressed when you make a promise… Greta kept at him for a while and then moved on, but did she and her Tea Party pals really believe all the promises that the GOP made during the run-up to the midterms? Howard Fineman has already reported that Republicans can’t come close to cutting $100 billion out of the budget, as Boehner promised in his idiotic Pledge to America. The GOP “budget cut” numbers are getting squishier by the minute. At least it seemed that way in the hallways of the Capitol on a ceremonial first day of swearing-ins, family photo ops and back-slapping goodwill. Republicans campaigned coast to coast on, among other things, a promise to cut $100 billion out of the federal budget. But now they are talking about cuts as slim as $30 billion, blaming the change on the fine print that no one read — or if they read, did not understand. It turns out the $100-billion figure meant $100 billion from a budget that President Barack Obama proposed, which was never passed. And now that the fiscal year is nearly half over, well, there’s just no way … And then there’s the very nutty Rep. Louis Gohmert from Texas, who stripped out transparency from the rules. BUT – the health care repeal legislation, the first major bill that will move through Congress, will be a closed rule – meaning no one will be able to offer an amendment. When asked about the this contradiction Tuesday night, Boehner said, “it’s not like we haven’t litigated this for years.” And, finally, the initial rules package that House Republicans will pass Wednesday had a provision to make committee attendance public. But the House GOP conference voted last night to strip that out (a move by Rep. Louie Gohmert, R-Texas). The goal had been transparency – who is at these hearings? But making that public will no longer be a requirement. The reason? Some GOP lawmakers say they were concerned about getting slammed for missing hearings when they may have extenuating circumstances, like a death in the family. I do hope right-wing pundits continue to hold the GOP accountable for their promises. I imagine if they are too hard on them, though, then another Fox News memo will come down from Bill Sammon telling them to tone it down .
