Heh : One Democrat running for reelection for a conservative seat is bragging about his loyalty — to John Boehner. “Bill Owens didn’t vote with Nancy Pelosi 93 percent of the time,” the narrator says, responding to an attack ad from his Republican rival in a conservative Upstate New York district. “He voted with the Republican leader 63 percent of the time.” Owens, elected in a special election after a Republican civil war earlier this year, now faces a unified challenge from the right. UPDATE: National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Ken Spain points to a Washington Post chart that shows Owens voting with his party 93 percent of the time and accuses Owens of “lying about his record.” Owens is the guy who won the seat that conservatives fought over a few months ago. That seat should have gone to a Republican last time but the party self-destructed.

The New York Times On The Food Revolution- Plus A Michael Pollan Article

This weekend’s New York Times Magazine was their annual food issue, about a subject dear to TreeHugger’s heart: “how the food revolution- from farm to table- is really a story about seeding and savouring communities.” Christine Muhlke, in Growing Together, notes the food revolution covers both the scrappy urban farm in Detroit and the upscale farmers market, and that it is not without its issues and conflicts: Class issues are inevitable with a movement driven by the college educated, regardless if they can sweat $2… Read the full story on TreeHugger

‘Brace’ for No Change: AP Frets Steady Social Security Payments Mean Seniors Forced to Buy ‘Cheap Whiskey’

The consumer price index is holding steady, so that means no “cost of living adjustment” upward in Social Security payments in 2011, prompting the Associated Press to distribute on Monday night a lengthy dispatch reciting complaints from seniors about the supposedly intolerable situation: “ Senior citizens brace for Social Security freeze .” Without mentioning how recipients received a very generous 5.8 percent hike in 2009 , Florida-based AP reporter Matt Sedensky ominously led: Seniors prepared to cut back on everything from food to charitable donations to whiskey as word spread Monday that they will have to wait until at least 2012 to see their Social Security checks increase. If no change means cutting back on food, imagine the media's hyperbole over victims if anyone ever suggests reducing payments in any federal program. That's what the Tea Party will be up against. As for the threat to the ability of our nation's seniors to imbibe whisky, Sedensky stopped by “St. Andrews Estates North, a Boca Raton retirement community,” where “Bette Baldwin won't be able to travel or help her children as much. Dorcas Eppright will give less to charity. Jack Dawson will buy cheap whiskey instead of his beloved Canadian Club.” Another year without an increase in payments while costs hold even and Dawson will be forced to eat dog food! read more

From Rasmussen : Nearly three-out-of-four voters (73%) believe it is at least somewhat likely that the new health care law will cause some companies to drop health insurance coverage for their employees, including 47% who say it is Very Likely. And they’re right because THAT’S THE GOAL of Obamacare. Make the health insurance process so unwieldy and costly that the only fiscally sound decision by companies will be to drop their coverage the dump their employees into the national pool, thus hastening the single-payer plan that was what the liberals wanted all along. In other words, Obamacare will work as expected.

Obama to Lift Offshore Drilling Moratorium this Week

Photo: WN , Creative Commons Aaaaand we’re back. Back to the regularly scheduled programming of offshore drilling, dominant oil companies calling the shots, and the same backwards-looking energy policy we had before BP’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded , killing 11 men and inflicting upon the Gulf of Mexico the worst environmental disaster the US has ever seen. Yes, the Obama administration has announced today that it is lifting the

Malaysia Messes With Mosquito Genes to Fight Dengue Fever

Photo via aussiegall Mosquitos are the bane of humans as they’re a primary way diseases from malaria to dengue fever are spread. Malaysia has been fighting a frustrated battle with dengue fever, and might become the first Asian country to use genetically engineered insects, rather than pesticides or managed water ways, to fight against the spread of the disease. But could releasing mosquitoes with modified genes have even worse unintended consequences?… Read the full story on TreeHugger
