ASUS’ ultra-thin RT-N6U router hits FCC, adherence to diet in question

It’s a pretty long trip down memory lane for us to return to ASUS’ ultra-thin RT-56U router; last time we saw it was behind plexiglass at CeBIT in March . At long last it’s returned to the spotlight, only this time that luminance is provided by the FCC’s notorious labs. The dual-band Gigabit Wireless-N device gets just one image — and given the unflattering angle, we’re not quite sure if it’s retained that slender figure. The filing is dated October 11 with a 45-day confidentiality agreement and enough references to US sales that we wouldn’t be surprised to see it hit stateside retail in the not-too-distant future — with or without its lean frame. Kenyan Man Builds Himself an Airplane From Scratch

Screenshot from YouTube If all goes according to plan, this week Gabriel Nderitu will join the ranks of aviation history by becoming the first Kenyan to achieve flight with a homemade airplane. The 42-year-old, like the Wright brothers before him, isn’t a professional engineer or a pilot — in fact, he works in IT. But after months of studying airplane design and almost a year of tinkering on his humble plane, Gabriel n… Read the full story on TreeHugger

“Lean Forward,” MSNBC's new slogan suggests. The better to stick a shiv in your opponent's back. Ethics-averse Rachel Maddow did exactly that on her MSNBC show last night. After disparaging Republican candidates for their gall in criticizing reckless federal spending and government-controlled health care, Maddow made this jaw-dropper of a claim — read more

Micron introduces V100 LCOS projector, WQVGA in an 8.5cc package

Projector-phones are still a rare commodity, despite the array of tiny projectors available to shove in the things. Micron is now beaming a picture of its hat into the ring, announcing the V100 LCOS projector. It’s a wee thing, measuring just 33 x 31 x 12mm, pumping out five lumens of light at a resolution of 320 x 240 while pulling down just 1.5 watts of power. The big deal here is integrated circuitry that takes care of any processing required to display images, meaning no additional drain on your already over-taxed mobile processor. No word on availability or what this will cost manufacturers to stuff in their devices, but we’d like to see a few more pixels out of it before it goes mainstream. Netflix’s new PS3 app includes new features, new headaches (video)

Take Netflix’s widely adored streaming service, subtract the disc, add 1080p video and 5.1 audio and you should have something everyone’s happy with right? Not exactly, as we’ve discovered a day after the updated Netflix app launched for the PlayStation 3 with a bunch of new features and unfortunately, a few new issues to go along with them including the app not working at all on imported systems, needing a new PSN user ID and the confusion of certain users seeing very different interfaces than what was promised. You’ve been lighting up our comments with things you’ve noticed so we tried it out ourselves and with Netflix’s help, have a few answers. Check after the break for a video walkthrough of the new interface including the new video browsing feature, plus information about some of the initial problems users have experienced and how to solve them. White guys : The largest group of early voters in North Carolina is made up of white Republican men, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Democracy North Carolina, a campaign watchdog group. During the 2008 Democratic sweep, black Democratic women led all groups during the 17 days of early voting. But during the first three days of early voting this year, it is white Republican men. “Early voting doesn’t favor one party or another, but reveals who’s most organized and enthusiastic about making their voices heard,” said Bob Hall, director of Democracy North Carolina. I’m sure somehow this will be spun as racism (against Obama) or sexism (against Nancy Pelosi) or homophobia (against Bawney Fwank).

Barnes & Noble holding a ‘very special event’ next week

Can you believe it’s almost been a year since the Nook was announced ? The reader was first shown to the public on October 20th last year, and started shipping to the public in limited quantities in December. We don’t know if Barnes & Noble is planning a follow-up just yet, but this mysterious invite we just got in the ol’ email inbox might hint at such an occasion. Last year’s event in NY was at a much larger venue, while this year B&N is hoping to cram people into its Union Square store in the area it typically hosts authors for book readings — that could be a hint at something less impressive, or maybe they just wanted to cut costs. Maybe Chairman Leonard Riggio is going to read a book to us! Hopefully it’s a little more exciting than that, and we’ll be sure to tell you all about it either way.
