Can Children and Christmas Co-Exist with Capitalism?

Article by WN.Com Correspondent Dallas Darling. “…the ascription of innocence largely permits adults to not assume responsibility for their role in setting children up for failure, for abandoning them to the dictates of marketplace mentalities that remove the supportive and nurturing networks that provide young people with adequate healthcare, food, housing, and educational opportunities.” -Henry A. Giroux, Stealing Innocence, Corporate Culture’s War On Children It was the week before Christmas when I glanced at the local paper. The headline read: “Couple charged with baby’s murder.” The parents of a two-year old girl had just been arrested for charges of physical abuse towards their…

Chaos in Europe as snow strands thousands

THOUSANDS of travellers are stranded at the main Paris airport after hundreds of Christmas flights were cancelled, as freezing weather and widespread snowfalls caused travel chaos across Europe. About 400 flights in and out of Roissy-Charles de Gaulle were scrapped, with some 30,000 travellers’ plans disrupted by the cancellations and delays, said the airport’s director Patrice Hardel. Flights in Belgium and Germany were also affected and motorists stayed off the roads as western Europe battled the latest cold snap. “Since Roissy came into being, we’ve never seen anything like this,” Pierre Graff, the head of Aeroports de Paris, the group that runs the airport, told RTL radio. West African leaders threaten force if Gbagbo stays

ABUJA (AFP) – West African nations were preparing to send a high-level delegation to Ivory Coast after threatening force if Laurent Gbagbo refused to quit power. Leaders from the 15-member ECOWAS regional bloc also warned Friday in a statement after their summit that those responsible for post-election deaths would face international prosecution. Gbagbo's internationally recognised rival in last month's presidential vote, Alassane Ouattara, meanwhile urged the army to desert the incumbent leader. The ECOWAS delegation was an “ultimate gesture” to Gbagbo in the hope that he could be persuaded to leave peacefully, said leaders of the Economic Community of West African…

Reva’s text-to-recharge electric car rolls to a standstill the US

Remember the electric car with the ingenious hook of a reserve battery that can only be accessed in the case of an emergency by texting or calling the car’s manufacturer? Well, it appears that the project is having a bit of trouble getting off the ground in the US, though it shockingly doesn’t have anything to do with that flagship feature. As the story goes, upstart Bannon Automotive signed a deal with the car’s manufacturer, India-based Reva Electric Car Company, that gave it the exclusive license to manufacture and sell the car in the US, but Bannon is now alleging that Reva broke its agreements and says it’s been left with no choice but to take legal action. Ill-conceived feature aside, the stakes in the lawsuit are fairly high, as Bannon Automotive was actually formed with the sole intention of bringing the Reva electric car to the US, and it had hoped to bring as many as 250 jobs to Onondaga County, New York. Pope Celebrates Christmas Eve Mass Amid Security Fears

Associated Press VATICAN CITY—Pope Benedict XVI ushered in Christmas with a midnight Mass on Friday amid heightened security concerns following the package bombings at two Rome embassies and Christmas Eve security breaches at the Vatican the past two years. Benedict processed down the central aisle of St. Peter’s Basilica at the start and end of the Mass without incident; with his normal phalanx of bodyguards on either side, he stopped several times to bless babies held up to him from the pews. Christmas Around the…

How would you change Nokia’s N8?

There’s no need to tell you that a lot was (and still is, in a way) riding on Nokia’s N8 . It was said to be the outfit’s first dead-serious smartphone to rival the giants of today, and it was also Nokia’s first chance to truly reveal Symbian^3 to the world. We’ve already churned out our two pennies on the matter, but for those of you who bought in, now’s the time to get really real. Are you satisfied with where Nokia’s going with the N8? Do you seriously see a long and lively future when looking at Symbian^3? If someone (read: UPS) accidentally delivered the keys to the Finnish kingdom to you, how would you go about tweaking and / or reshaping the N8? Would you have selected a different operating system? Added a few more hardware buttons? Thrown in a different processor? Made it available on your carrier of choice? Let us know down in comments below, and keep it sensible — it’s Christmas Eve and all.
