Sarah Palin: The Movie

enlarge You knew it was coming, and just in time to revive some wingnuts’ hopes of a Palin presidential bid. Oh, and the title is just…Palinesque. “The Undefeated” is a 2-hour “epic film” about…Sarah Palin. Move over to make room for her ego, please. It is produced by Steve Bannon, a former Goldman-Sachs executive turned conservative filmaker. Other titles he’s produced include Border War: The Battle Over Illegal Immigration , Fire from the Heartland , and Battle for America with Dick Morris , under the Citizens United Productions banner. Via Real Clear Politics : The fruits of that initial conversation are now complete. The result is a two-hour-long, sweeping epic, a rough cut of which Bannon screened privately for Sarah and Todd Palin last Wednesday in Arizona, where Alaska’s most famous couple has been rumored to have purchased a new home. When it premieres in Iowa next month, the film is poised to serve as a galvanizing prelude to Palin’s prospective presidential campaign — an unconventional reintroduction to the nation that she and her political team have spent months eagerly anticipating, even as Beltway Republicans have largely concluded that she won’t run. RealClearPolitics was recently given an exclusive screening of a rough cut of the now finished film, which Bannon designed, in part, to help catapult Palin from the presidential afterthought she has become in the eyes of many pundits directly to the front lines of the 2012 GOP conversation. Palin initially learned about Bannon’s work after she saw one of his previous films about the origins of the tea party movement, “Generation Zero,” which premiered last year in Nashville and was later aired in prime time on the Fox News Channel. Impressed, Palin promoted “Generation Zero” via Twitter before later reaching out to Bannon about creating something to highlight her record in Alaska, where her performance in office was overshadowed by her resignation eight months after the 2008 presidential election. We can only hope it does as well as Atlas Shrugged did at the box office.

Catholic scholars raise moral issues for Republicans like Boehner — so O’Reilly calls them immoral

Click here to view this media There’s an interesting dynamic beginning to play out recently on Paul Ryan’s budget by Catholic theologians and scholars against what I would call Catholic lobbyists — and having been raised Catholic, it’s a dynamic I’m familiar with. A group of Catholic academics spoke out against Rep. John Boehner, (who is also a Catholic) because he supports Paul Ryan’s budget plan, which will ultimately hurt the least of us — and as such, he’s violating important tenets of modern Catholicism. Here’s the cached version of the letter that was sent to Boehner and those that signed it: Mr. Speaker, your voting record is at variance from one of the Church’s most ancient moral teachings. From the apostles to the present, the Magisterium of the Church has insisted that those in power are morally obliged to preference the needs of the poor. Your record in support of legislation to address the desperate needs of the poor is among the worst in Congress. This fundamental concern should have great urgency for Catholic policy makers. Yet, even now, you work in opposition to it. The 2012 budget you shepherded to passage in the House of Representatives guts long-established protections for the most vulnerable members of society. It is particularly cruel to pregnant women and children, gutting Maternal and Child Health grants and slashing $500 million from the highly successful Women Infants and Children nutrition program. When they graduate from WIC at age 5, these children will face a 20% cut in food stamps. The House budget radically cuts Medicaid and effectively ends Medicare. It invokes the deficit to justify visiting such hardship upon the vulnerable, while it carves out $3 trillion in new tax cuts for corporations and the wealthy … read on You remember the phony outrage that was caused when right wingers went ballistic over President Obama being invited to speak at Notre Dame? It’s not surprising the the mainstream media hasn’t covered this at all. But when it’s the Catholic Bishops trying to screw up health care reform, it’s major news. As E.J. Dionne also observed about this media blackout, you didn’t hear many news stories coming out about this divide because it doesn’t fit with the Beltway’s usual narrative: And the story broke from the stereotypical narrative the media like to impose on Christians in general, and Catholics in particular. If the headline is “Conservative Catholics Denounce Liberal Politician on Abortion,” all the boilerplate is at the ready. But when the headline is “Catholic Progressives Challenge Conservative Politician on Social Justice,” this is something new and complicated. It’s far easier to write the 10th story of the week about Newt Gingrich. Catholics Anthony Stevens-Arroyo writes: Catholics challenge Boehner on faith and morals The exception, in a perverse way, was Fox News, which briefly last week tried to make a right-wing issue out of the story. Bill O’Reilly led the charge, and he came up with an unusual defense of Boehner (since he sides with the GOP) by calling the academics, gasp, immoral. O’Reilly: But to attack Speaker Boehner as an unfit Catholic is itself immoral because only God can make that judgment. The college professors protesting the speaker’s commencement address at Catholic University are making a blatantly political statement that has little to do with religion . Bill O’Reilly, a self proclaimed moral gasbag opinionator, made what he calls his own moral arguments against Dr. George Tiller, and eventually Tiller was murdered. See, everything for right-wing Catholics is tied to a woman and how they can control them. It’s as if nothing else matters, and that’s sad. Bill O also lies by justifying his own position against our social safety nets by saying that America is going bankrupt. Now I, your humble correspondent, am also Catholic, and I do support spending cuts because even though entitlement programs do some good, the looming bankruptcy of the country would harm far more people than the entitlements help. Oh, and if you thought those Catholic Bishops wouldn’t support Paul Ryan’s odious budget, guess again: Jonathon Cohen: The Catholic Bishop and the Devil Timothy Dolan, the Archbishop of New York and president of the Conference of Catholic Bishops, sent a letter on Wednesday to House Budget Chairman Paul Ryan. The subject of the letter was the House Republican Budget, which Ryan wrote, and it was part of an ongoing dialogue between the two men. Dolan’s letter did not endorse the Republican budget per se. But it praised Ryan for his attention to the Church’s values and, if you read the text, you can see why Ryan has (according to Politico ) been brandishing it as a signal of support Digby recaps how those same Catholic Bishops acted as a lobbying group for Republicans in their efforts to kill health car reform. Here’s the entire Bill O transcript: Bill O’Reilly: Controversy Over Boehner Speaking at Catholic University Speaker Boehner is set to give the commencement address at Catholic University in Washington, D.C., this Saturday. But 79 college professors around the country have signed a letter opining that Mr. Boehner is not upholding Catholic moral teachings. The professors say that because the speaker supports budget cuts that might impact poor people, including women and children, that he is “anti-life and not upholding Catholic theology.” Mr. Boehner himself is a Catholic and replied this way: (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) REP. JOHN BOEHNER, R-OHIO, SPEAKER OF THE HOUSE: Like any religion, you will have some who are a little bit more liberal and some who are a bit more conservative. But I believe that the actions that I have taken during my years in Congress uphold the values of my faith. (END VIDEO CLIP) Now I, your humble correspondent, am also Catholic, and I do support spending cuts because even though entitlement programs do some good, the looming bankruptcy of the country would harm far more people than the entitlements help. The college professors are missing the essential point. The responsibility of the U.S. government is to protect all its citizens, and a bankruptcy in this country would devastate everyone. The cold truth of the matter is that our government simply cannot spend the amount of money it is spending. Everything has to be cut, including entitlements. That is not an immoral position. That is a responsible position because, again, if the economy collapses, everyone will be hurt. Now, many left-wing academics believe that raising taxes on the wealthy and corporations will cover the entitlement spending, but that is a canard. The enormous rise in Medicaid, Medicare and the looming Social Security disaster can never be covered by revenue enhancement. Never. All entitlements must be re-evaluated. There are ways to help the poor that don’t bankrupt us, and Catholics are compelled to help the poor. As you may know, “The Factor” gives millions of dollars to charitable causes. We have set up BillOReilly.com to do that because we believe those who have should help the have-nots. But to attack Speaker Boehner as an unfit Catholic is itself immoral because only God can make that judgment. The college professors protesting the speaker’s commencement address at Catholic University are making a blatantly political statement that has little to do with religion. And that’s “The Memo.”

MSNBC anchor David Shuster was suspended in 2008 for suggesting Hillary Clinton had “pimped out” her daughter Chelsea on the air. So how will MSNBC handle their host calling Laura Ingraham a “right-wing slut” and a “talk slut”? Will Schultz be pressed to apologize to the Catholic churchgoer and mother of two? Will the feminists at NOW and the Women's Media Center take exception? Brian Maloney at Radio Equalizer found this on Schultz's May 23 national radio show — not on MSNBC, but the female-smearing principle is the same. Schultz was angry Ingraham would suggest it showed “tone-deafness” (both on radio and on Fox & Friends) for Obama to be hoisting a Guinness in Ireland as people dig out from under tornadoes in the American heartland. Strangely, despite all the hype the media poured on Team Bush over disasters, not a single high-level Obama administration official has visited the devastated town of Joplin, Missouri yet. Obama's slated for Sunday, but no one beneath his rank has gone except FEMA officials (according to this FEMA press release ). No Biden, no Napolitano, just phone calls. Here's a transcript of Schultz's low blows: Rain, thunderstorms, winds getting whipped into tornadoes of horrific proportions. Hot weather, all of this stuff. And what are the Republicans thinking about? They're not thinking about their next-door neighbor. They're just thinking about how much this is going to cost. President Obama is going to be visiting Joplin, Missouri, on Sunday. But you know what they're talking about? Like this right-wing slut, what's her name, Laura Ingraham? Yeah, she's a talk slut. You see, she was, back in the day, praising President Reagan when he was drinking a beer overseas. But now that Obama's doing it, they're working him over. This isn't just mean-spirited. It's remarkably obtuse. Wouldn't there be a little difference between having a beer in Ireland when America's calm versus after a natural disaster? But just start with the idea that Laura Ingraham didn't have a radio show in the 1980s. (She started in 2001 .)

Tornadoes, Storms Kill 6 In Oklahoma, Kansas

(CNN) — Severe weather’s assault on middle America continued Tuesday, as tornadoes and thunderstorms pulverized communities and claimed at least six lives in Oklahoma and Kansas. Twisters also were brewing in Dallas and several northern Texas counties, according to the National Weather Service, with at least one tornado reported on the ground. There was no rest for the weary and grieving. Joplin, Missouri, where 124 died in a tornado Sunday, was under a tornado warning late Tuesday. Two motorists died when an uprooted tree slammed into their van in Stafford County, Kansas, according to the state adjutant general’s office. The deadly string of tornadoes that rampaged through central Oklahoma…

Tornadoes hit Oklahoma and Kansas

At least six people were killed in Oklahoma and Kansas as the violent storms moved east, just two days after a tornado killed 122 in Joplin, Missouri Authorities in Dallas evacuated the airport and a baseball stadium on Tuesday night as a new round of tornadoes tore across middle America, just two days after the deadliest twister in modern history. At least six people were killed in Oklahoma and Kansas as the violent storms moved east, striking barely 48 hours after a tornado descended on the town of Joplin, Missouri killing 122. The new line of violent storms caused havoc across a region that has already experienced a severe year for tornadoes. In Dallas, officials bundled people off planes and into a basement beneath an airport terminal building. Fans were evacuated from a major league baseball game. The storms at one point even forced the evacuation of the storm prediction centre in Oklahoma City. In Joplin, hundreds remained missing yesterday after the town took a direct hit from a tornado. The recovery effort interrupted by bouts of severe weather. Two emergency workers were struck by lightening on Monday. Officials estimated about 8,000 buildings were destroyed. The heavy toll spurred calls for an overhaul of the tornado system to help ensure people get out of harms’ way. “We need to ask ourselves, what can we do to protect Americans?” Jack Hayes, the head of the national weather service told reporters. “I have to say, it’s not enough. We have to do more.” He suggested the higher death tolls in recent tornadoes could be linked to demographic changes, with Americans moving into western and southern states that are prone to hurricanes. The national weather service is considering introducing smartphone warnings and other systems. Storm sirens sounded more than 20 minutes before the tornado hit Joplin just before 6pm on Sunday more than the 13- or 14-minute average warning time, said Greg Carbin, the meteorologist who heads the weather services storm prediction centre. That should have been ample time to get to cover. But forecasters are growing concerned that people – especially those living in tornado-prone areas of the south and central United States, are becoming blase about warnings, or that the warnings are not getting through in time. Increasing the warning lead time might even make the problem of complacency worse because it would also affect accuracy of forecasts, said Carbin. That is something we grapple with all the time, said Carbin. “If we want to push the envelope with respect to predictions are we also going to overwarn or cry wolf too often? I would argue that there may be some signs we are already doing that.” However, Missouri s governor, Jay Nixon, suggested some people in Joplin could not hear the tornado sirens over strong winds and heavy rain. When the pressure caused those alarms to go off, there was so much rain, so much hail many of the folks couldn t even hear it, he said. There were similar complaints after last month’s deadly tornadoes in Alabama and other southern states when thunderstorms blew down powerlines and weather service systems, leaving mobile phones as the only means of communication, Bob Henson of the University Corporation of Atmospheric Research said. People tend to confirm a warning themselves before acting. “Did the sirens go off? What is the TV meteorologist saying? What are my family and friends doing?” he said. Fast-changing conditions also lead people to underestimate the danger. United States Natural disasters and extreme weather Oklahoma Kansas Suzanne Goldenberg guardian.co.uk

Time Attacks Arrogant ‘Pigs’ Lying About Sex, Quite Different Than the Monica Outbreak of 1998

Time’s cover this week proclaims “Sex. Lies. Arrogance. What Makes Powerful Men Act Like Pigs.” The May 30 cover story by Nancy Gibbs pondered the allegations against Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dominique Strauss-Kahn: But both suggest an abuse of power and a betrayal of trust. And both involve men whose long-standing reputations for behaving badly toward women did not derail their rise to power. Which raises the question: How can it be, in this ostensibly enlightened age, when men and women live and work as peers and are schooled regularly in what conduct is acceptable and what is actionable, that anyone with so little judgment, so little honor, could rise to such heights? This is not now Gibbs wrote of Bill Clinton during the depths of his intern-sex scandal. Clinton wasn’t an arrogant pig, but a miraculous politician who deserved forgiveness. From February 9, 1998 :
