Two recent reports detailing how wars in Iraq and Afghanistan were taking a toll on active duty soldiers and returning veterans, are reminders of another time, another place, and of another war. The year was 1781, and time was running out for the Continental Army which was at war with the British Empire. Disillusionment, unrelenting cold and misery, and little pay and food, added to the possibility of mutinies. Circulating rumors of the British plundering and confiscating local farms and businesses only added fuel to desertion or a large scale military revolt.
