Ronald Reagan to the Rescue

The Gipper saves the day : A U.S. Navy aircraft carrier rendezvoused late Tuesday afternoon with a stranded cruise ship off the coast of Mexico, according to a Navy spokesman. The USS Ronald Reagan was loaded with 10,000 pounds of food and supplies for the cruise ship Carnival Splendor, with its nearly 3,300 passengers and nearly 1,200 crew members, Cmdr. Greg Hicks, spokesman of the U.S. Third Fleet, said. The Carnival Splendor remained stranded some 130 miles west of Ensenada, Mexico Tuesday, a day after it lost power following an engine room fire. The fire occurred about 6 a.m. Monday in the aft engine room of the Splendor, the cruise line said Tuesday in a statement posted on its website. The blaze was extinguished and no passengers or crew were injured. However, engineers were not able to restore power to the ship, which was operating on auxiliary generators, the statement said. As of Tuesday, “several key ship systems, including air conditioning, hot food service and telephones are not available,” the cruise line said. They should name this the “Mexico Reality Cruise”. No air conditioning, hot food, or telephones – just like most of Mexico! Another report said they don’t have flush toilets working either. Add in an Aztec shrine or two and you’ve got a Mexican vacation!
