Riot police clear protesters from barricaded Acropolis

Riot police used tear gas to evict protesting workers from the Acropolis in Athens today. More than 100 culture ministry workers shut down the 2,500-year-old temple yesterday, complaining they were owed 22 months’ back pay. The protesters barricaded themselves inside, padlocked the gates and refused to allow tourists in until their demands were met. Police in riot gear arrived after a court ruled the protesters were hindering access. “Riot police and violence won’t break the strike,” they chanted, clinging to the entrance gates.
