After returning from World War One, he bought a small farm. Like many other farmers between World War I and the Great Depression, my grandfather believed the promising future as foretold by wealthy monopolists and investors. They encouraged millions of farmers to apply for loans in order to plant more crops and raise more livestock to feed a recovering Europe.
