Mark Melvin, Prisoner, Sues For Right To Read ‘Slavery By Another Name’

An Alabama inmate wanted to read a Pulitzer Prize winning book about de facto slavery in the South during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The New York Times reports that prisoner Mark Melvin has filed a lawsuit after he was not allowed to read Slavery by Another Name: The Re-Enslavement of Black Americans from the Civil War to World War II, by Douglas A. Blackmon. In his suit, Melvin claims prison officials deemed the book a “security threat.”
