The National Labor Relations Board says that most private employers have to post signs that tell workers what their rights are in terms of the National Labor Relations Act. Special interests for big business owners freak out, calling it “a trap” and “a new low” for the NLRB. Central Michigan University faculty are picketing the college for refusing to bargain with the teachers union in good faith. Mitt Romney embraces “right to work” anti-union laws. Governors Rick Perry (TX) and John Kasich (OH) reject $731 million in aid for the jobless. Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine, Wayne Kramer of the MC5 and Tim McIlrath of Rise Against are doing a series of shows in Wisconsin, Ohio and Michigan in support of union rights and to benefit the Nation Institute. National Nurses United are calling for a “Main Street Contract for the Americna People that would protect working families and will have a “National Day of Action to Tax Wall Street” on September 1. Students are sitting in at the Hershey Chocolate factory in Palmyra, Pa., to expose the use of subcontracting that prevents workers from exercising their rights because they can’t determine who exactly they work for. There is a growing chorus of organizations fighting against discrimination against the unemployed in hiring practices. 1,300 Bakery, Confectionery, Tobacco Workers and Grain Millers were locked out August 1 in three states after they rejected American Crystal Sugar Company’s final offer as not being a fair contract.
