Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak is to step down after nearly 30 years in power following eight days of protests by demonstrators demanding his resignation. He made the announcement in a televised address to the nation today after a huge protest by a quarter of a million people in downtown Cairo. “I do not intend to run in the next election”, he announced in the broadcast. That election is currently scheduled for September.
