Blue Clear Sky is one of Strait’s best, proving again that the man knows a great melody when he hears one. The title track, for instance, sports a contemporary pop-influenced melody, but surrounded by pedal steel, it remains a country song, and a good one. The album’s full of good country songs, in fact, especially the old-school honky-tonk of “King of the Hill,” the power ballad “Carried Away,” the almost unbearably pathetic “I Can Still Make Cheyenne,” and “Need I Say More,” where Strait swings like a hybrid of Tommy Duncan and Frank Sinatra. –David Cantwell Features: Original Release CD See the details
