Rustam Makhmudov, the man accused of shooting Politkovskaya in 2006, was detained in the province of Chechnya, according to a lawyer, Murad Musayev, whose comments were reported by Ekho Moskvy radio. Politkovskaya, who investigated rights abuses in Chechnya and high-level corruption across Russia, was gunned down in her apartment building in a killing that sparked outrage worldwide. According to the Interfax news agency, an unidentified law enforcement official said Makhmudov would be brought to Moscow for questioning. Two of Makhmudov’s brothers, Dzhabrail and Ibragim, were acquitted in 2009 along with a third man tried for Politkovskaya’s murder. Rustam Makhmudov avoided capture and had remained at large.
