Hundreds of Afghans took to the streets of Kabul on to denounce the assassination of government peace mediator and ethnic Tajik powerbroker Burhanuddin Rabbani. It was the first protest of its kind since Rabbani, a key leader of the 1980s anti-Soviet resistance and President Hamid Karzai’s top envoy in peace efforts with the Taliban, was killed by a suicide bomber last week. Angry, mainly Tajik supporters on Tuesday shouted “death to Pakistan,” “death to terrorists” and “death to the Taliban” — blaming the Pashtun-dominated militia for the killing, an AFP photographer said.
