Researchers Develop iSTD Test

In an effort to curb STD transfer across the pond, British doctors and computer engineers are currently developing small electronic devices that act as tiny STD testing kits, pluggable into a smart phone or computer that then allows the user to receive a diagnosis in minutes of which, if any, STDs they have. —JCL The Guardian: Mobile phones and computers will soon be able to diagnose sexually transmitted diseases under innovative plans to cut the UK’s rising rate of herpes, chlamydia and gonorrhoea among young people. Doctors and technology experts are developing small devices, similar to pregnancy testing kits, that will tell someone quickly and privately if they have caught an infection through sexual contact. People who suspect they have been infected will be able to put urine or saliva on to a computer chip about the size of a USB chip, plug it into their phone or computer and receive a diagnosis within minutes, telling them which, if any, sexually transmitted infection (STI) they have. Seven funders, including the Medical Research Council, have put £4m into developing the technology via a forum called the UK Clinical Research Collaboration. Hannity, Bozell Excoriate NBC’s Lauer and MSNBC’s Ratigan in November 11 Media Mash

NBC's Matt Lauer and MSNBC's Dylan Ratigan last night found themselves just two of the targets in the latest “Media Mash” segment on Fox News Channel's “Hannity” show. NewsBusters publisher Brent Bozell appeared on the November 11 program to dissect NBC's biased coverage of former President George W. Bush's new memoir, “Decision Points,” an ABC News puff piece on Michelle Obama's fashion sense, and MSNBC's Ratigan giving a platform to a leftist calling for violent revolution. “Matt Lauer is absolutely delusional,” opined Bozell, pointing to Lauer's criticism of the former president's defense of his signature tax cut legislation. “The tax cuts caused the recession? The reality is, the Bush tax cuts gave us four million jobs. Those are the facts; you can't go against these facts.” [Video of the segment available after the page break.] read more

Court Allows ‘DADT’ Ban For Now

Denying a request by the Log Cabin Republicans, U.S. Supreme Court justices on Friday have allowed the “don’t ask, don’t tell” ban on gays in the military to remain in place while the issue cycles through the federal appeals court circuit. —JCL The Associated Press: The Supreme Court on Friday allowed the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy on gays in the military to remain in place while a federal appeals court considers the issue. The court did not comment in denying a request from the Log Cabin Republicans, a gay rights group, to step into the ongoing federal court review of “don’t ask, don’t tell.” The Obama administration urged the high court not to get involved at this point. Last month, a federal judge ruled that the policy violates the civil rights of gay Americans and she issued an injunction barring the Pentagon from applying it. But the San Francisco-based appeals court said the policy could remain in effect while it considers the administration’s appeal. San Suu Kyi to Be Freed

Reports are streaming in that suggest Burmese military authorities have authorized the release of pro-democracy superstar Aun San Suu Kyi after a national election in the dictator-led country. San Suu Kyi has lived the past seven years in house arrest and 15 of the past 21 years in state-sponsored detention. San Suu Kyi was allegedly already freed by the military regime with stipulations on where she could travel and with whom she could meet. But the Nobel Laureate has insisted in her unconditional freedom, maintaining another day in her detention residence. —JCL The BBC: Reports are coming out of Burma saying the military authorities have signed an order authorising the release of pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi. But hopes that the Nobel laureate would be freed on Friday appear to be fading. A leader of her National League for Democracy told 2,000 supporters gathered at the party headquarters to go home and return on Saturday. A Grand Ole Challenger Arises

A tussle within the Grand Ole Party is set to be arbitrated as prominent Michigan Republican Saul Anuzis has declared his intent to challenge Michael Steele, current GOP chairman, to an inter-party electoral contest about who will lead the Republicans into the 2012 election. —JCL The Associated Press via the Guardian: A prominent Michigan Republican said Friday he is running against Michael Steele, arguing the GOP can win in 2012 only if the party chairman steps out of the limelight and allows candidates to be the voice and face of the party. Saul Anuzis, who lost his bid for Republican National Committee chairman two years ago, made his plans known in an e-mail. “My agenda is very straightforward. I have no interest in running for office. I won’t be writing a book. It is not my goal to be famous,” said Anuzis, who promised to serve just one two-year term and work hard to elect Republicans “from the top to every township and city across this great country of ours.” Read more Related Entries November 12, 2010 A View From the Cheap Seats November 11, 2010 Rank-and-File Frustration

Here's one obvious demonstration of what happens when liberals gave the Food and Drug Administration the power to regulate tobacco: prominent, gruesome warnings of death on boxes of cigarettes. Apparently, mere text saying smoking can be fatal isn't enough “telling truth to power.” New York Times reporter Gardiner Harris celebrated this development on the front page of the Times Thursday. The headline was “U.S. Wants Smoking's Costs to Stare You in the Face.” Left out of this nanny-state story: the sinking feeling that the FDA could follow San Francisco's war-on-McDonald's example and start putting toe-tag photos (or maybe just obese-kid photos) on Happy Meal boxes. Anthony Hemsley of Commonwealth Brands tobacco gets a brief chance to suggest the graphic warnings add nothing and only serve “to stigmatize smokers and denormalize smoking.” (In other words, “smokers: the new alternative-lifestyle practitioners it's safe to hate.”) But Harris and the Times offer a parade of Obama government officials and public-health experts to explain their gruesome graphics campaign: read more
