Most people who met the late Elizabeth Edwards would describe her as fiercely intelligent, dynamic and the epitome of grace under pressure. She endured hardships that none of us would wish to deal with and had to do so under the unforgiving glare of the media spotlight. With her sad passing yesterday, the country lost a passionate advocate for universal health care. I personally would go so far as to say that much of my support for the John Edwards presidential candidacy in 2008 had to do with the appeal of getting Elizabeth Edwards as part of the package. Hell, if she had decided to be the candidate herself, I would have supported her. Which is why I was ready to throw my shoe at Chris Matthews last night. A man who was not immune to the charms of Elizabeth Edwards, egregiously booked Mark Halperin to mark her passing. Mark Halperin. Author of “Game Change”. WTF??? “A very tough person” is what Halperin called her today, on “Hardball.” When she was still with us, here’s what the relentlessly smarmy Halperin wrote about Elizabeth Edwards: What the world saw in Elizabeth: A valiant, determined, heroic every-woman. What the Edwards insiders saw: An abusive, intrusive, paranoid, condescending crazy-woman. While usually careful to attribute the characterization to “insiders,” Halperin’s “Game Change” painted Edwards as, in Jason Linkins’ words, “a shrill monster,” guilty primarily of the crime of being intelligent and ambitious. “The culture kicked Elizabeth Edwards when she was already down,” Jonathan Alter just wrote at the Daily Beast. And booking Halperin was just another kick. Note too, that the bulk of the airtime discussing her death, deals not with own achievements, her triumphs, her undeniable spirit, but of her husband’s infidelity. All the things about Elizabeth that could be discussed, knowing her family is grieving and may actually be looking to see how this event is being covered in the media and what Matthews wants to talk about is the public humiliation she was subjected to as she fought cancer. Really sensitive, Tweety. Way to honor a remarkable woman.

Late yesterday evening, House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer announced that the House will take up the American DREAM Act today — Wednesday, December 8th. Here is a statement from Frank Sharry, Executive Director of America’s Voice: “The news that the House of Representatives will hold a vote on the DREAM Act on Wednesday is historic. The DREAM Act is supported by educators, the military, small business, organized labor, and religious leaders from across the spectrum. This is the most significant pro-immigrant legislation this chamber will have taken up in a decade. The young people who would benefit from the DREAM Act are patriotic high-achievers who just want a chance to become full citizens of the only country they call home. “We applaud House Democratic leaders for scheduling a vote on this common sense, bipartisan, and fiscally responsible measure, and call on every Democrat and every Republican in the House to do the right thing. Pass this legislation so that young people who came to this country as babies and grew up as Americans can stabilize their lives and achieve their dreams. Pass this legislation so that our country can continue to benefit from their hard work and talent as they enroll in our universities and enlist in the Armed Forces. “Tomorrow will be the moment of truth: do you stand with these youth, their hard work, and their dreams, or do you stand for a darker America that would shun them and reject their vital contributions to this country?” Advocates have been calling their members of Congress all week, but they are being encouraged to make one final round of calls tomorrow: House: 866-967-6018; Senate: 866-996-5161. Mattel Puppy Tweets review

Though Twitter has become a greater professional tool than we’d imagine anyone ever intended it’s still hard to take the service too seriously. We like silly twitterers, whether they be offering pretend writing advice , charting the reclusive tendencies of Hollywood’s leading men, or just threatening to force choke any troll who gets in their way. Wouldn’t it be fun if your pooch could get in on those antics? No, as it turns out, it isn’t all that fun at all. Networks Offer Scant Coverage of Liberal DREAM Act, Frothed Over Arizona Immigration Bill

For much of the spring and summer, the big broadcast networks threw staff and airtime at covering Arizona's attempt to control its borders against rampant illegal immigration. Liberals detested Arizona's “harsh” new law, so the media elite reflexively treated it as a scandal in their coverage.

Chris Christie’s bullying style is inuring Americans to ugly discourse

Click here to view this media Digby caught this bit of bizarre right-wing behavior from New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie this weekend: Keith Chaudruc, of Madison, got the final question of the night. The Livingston school district elementary teacher launched into a list of complaints about drops in municipal aid, increasing NJ Transit fares and tax cuts for those making more than $1 million. His question: How could Christie sign off on a tax cut for the most wealthy, ignoring the regressive nature of the sales tax, while those at the bottom were getting squeezed with increases like the transit fares? The two adversaries went back and forth for a few minutes, until Chaudruc, a Republican, interrupted the governor. “You want to come up here?” Christie shouted. “You come up here … Let’s have a conversation..” Chaudruc, who stands 5’6″ and weighs about 160 pounds, backed away until the governor insisted “bring him up here,” and a state trooper escorted him to the stage. Christie, a few inches taller and several pounds heavier, loomed over Chaudruc as he launched into a tirade. “Your wonderful increase in taxes would have killed jobs in this state,” Christie said pointing his index finger at Chaudruc. “You and I have different ideas of what being a Republican is all about because I’m not going to raise taxes.” Before he could get another word in, Chaudruc was ushered off the stage and out of the room by a trooper. It looks like the schtick is wearing thin in New Jersey, at least: By bullying a citizen, hogging the microphone and condescendingly dismissing him, Christie was the rude one. But it’s nothing new. Christie has turned state politics into one never-ending yo’ mama joke. It doesn’t matter who you are — school superintendent, teacher, student, U.S. senator, state Assembly leader, former education commissioner or just a regular guy trying to have a conversation: If you disagree with him, Christie will try to humiliate you publicly. Some find Christie entertaining, but his combativeness is counterproductive and breeds the kind of hate speech that plaques the nation. However, as Alex Pareene at Salon observes : But some people find this totally delightful, because Chris Christie is basically an amusing comic television show character, like Charlie Sheen or Pat Buchanan. Whether it helps Christie politically depends on whether New Jersey residents find it funny or get bored with it. But Christie will continue doing it, because it’s a major part of his “brand.” In lieu of class solidarity, which is a privilege only afforded to the wealthy these days, American politics are mostly about tribal self-identification. Most Republicans get this, and that’s why being a shouty asshole doesn’t hurt Christie. Democrats — with a couple of exceptions, like Anthony Weiner — are not so good at this, which is why MSNBC’s liberal hosts whine about how Obama needs to “get tough” all the time without ever explaining how that would help him achieve policy goals and not just make them feel like they’re backing a winner. Like Digby, I find his bullying behavior clearly fascistic — this is how real fascists, the kind you get in Hayden Lake and at Joe Arpaio rallies, behave. I guess Americans are getting accustomed to that and a lot more approve of it. And that may be the scariest aspect of Chris Christie.

Sharpton wants FCC to shut down Limbaugh’s ‘racist talk’

Click here to view this media It’s no secret that Rev. Al Sharpton isn’t a fan of Rush Limbaugh. Now Sharpton is hoping the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will finally do something about the conservative radio host. Sharpton told MSNBC’s Ed Schultz Monday that he conducting a series of meetings with the FCC to see if anything can be done to put a stop to what Schultz called Limbaugh’s “racist-type talk.” “We have a series of meetings going on, and we’re going to see the FCC next week,” Sharpton said. “We’re not going to stand by and allow publicly regulated radio and television just go for marketing and promoting this kind of racism.” Sharpton is upset that Limbaugh has repeatedly called Democratic policies “reparations” for slavery. “The objective is unemployment, the objective is more food stamp benefits, the objective is more unemployment benefits, the objective is an expanding welfare state,” Limbaugh said on May 11. “The objective is to take the nations wealth and return it to the nation’s ‘rightful owners.’ Think reparations. Think forced reparations.” On June 22, Limbaugh revisited the subject. “Obama’s entire economic program is reparations,” he said. Schultz called Limbaugh’s words “racially-charged hate speech” and noted that Republican congressmen have picked up on the the theme. Rep. Steve King (R-IA) argued last week on the House floor that the claims of African-American farmers and American Indians who were discriminated against in the 1980s and 1990s by the Department of Agriculture are fraudulent. “We’ve got to stand up at some point and say, ‘We are not gonna pay slavery reparations in the United States Congress,’” he said. “That war’s been fought. That was over a century ago. That debt was paid for in blood and it was paid for in the blood of a lot of Yankees, especially. And there’s no reparations for the blood that paid for the sin of slavery. No one’s filing that claim.” “Rush Limbaugh has the right to say whatever he wants to say. He can’t do it, though, on publicly regulated air waves,” Sharpton noted. “The FCC has a responsibility to set standards, to say the public can not be offended based on their race or their gender in this country and use federally regulated airwaves that they give licenses to that are very competitive and the FCC is very selective based on standards.” “How would you monitor racist-type talk on these radio stations that are publicly licensed by the FCC? How would do you this?” asked Schultz “They come back and say it’s freedom of speech.” “Clearly I think that Rush Limbaugh’s statements would be over the top. You can’t say in the name of free speech you can say anything you want, when you are not allowed to do anything you want on radio stations and television stations. We can’t have standards everywhere but when it comes to race,” Sharpton said. Conservative blogs have been on the attack against Sharpton ever since he first told Schultz in mid-November that the FCC should take action against stations carrying Limbaugh’s show. “[T]he bottom line is that the left wants to find an excuse, any excuse, to grab the mike from the man who has wreaked so much havoc on their cause,” Mark Finkelstein wrote for Newsbusters.
