Three months from introduction to on sale ain’t too shabby in the camera world, and that’s exactly what Casio has managed to accomplish with the intriguing new Exilim EX-H20G . We first spotted this point-and-shoot at Photokina in Germany, and now we’ve had a solid week to put it through its paces. Naturally, the inclusion of Hybrid GPS (read: engineered to find a location indoors as well as outdoors) is the standout feature and key differentiator, but the 14.1 megapixel sensor, 10x optical zoom and 720p movie mode are all fine additions. It certainly isn’t the slimmest compact on the market, nor the cheapest at $349.99, but do the unique aspects of this thing make the price easier to stand? Join us after the break for our thoughts. Continue reading …What’s NVIDIA got up its sleeve for CES , you ask? A whole host of Sandy Bridge laptop and desktop machines, by the sound of its latest press release. The green giant of graphics has proudly announced a new record of 200 OEM design wins for Intel’s incoming CPUs. The big draw of Sandy Bridge is that it’s the first processor to include an integrated GPU embedded directly within its die, which is projected to improve power efficiency and overall performance — though clearly it hasn’t been impressive enough to get PC vendors to abandon discrete graphics chips. If anything, they seem to be going in the other direction and insisting on a discrete GPU as well. In other news, whether with or without NVIDIA’s help, the first Sandy Bridge laptops will feature quad-core parts. Such is the word directly from Intel, with one insider adding that the dual-core debutants will get their chance a month after CES, around the middle of February. Skip past the break for NVIDIA’s boastful PR or hit the source for more on Intel’s plans. Continue reading …For now, RIM’s looming mindshare problem is more theoretical than it is practical — as far as Wall Street’s concerned, at least — on today’s news that they’ve beaten the consensus estimates for fiscal Q3 revenue and income with $5.49 billion and $911.1 million, respectively. The company also shipped a record 14.2 million units in the three-month period, up a whopping 40 percent year-over-year, but subscriber additions fell a bit short — 5.1 million versus the 5.2 million that analysts had counted on. Interestingly, RIM has elected not to report adds anymore, which means they’re not offering guidance on adds for the next fiscal quarter, either — which certainly doesn’t seem like a good sign. Be that as it may, Waterloo’s confidence in its long-running leaders seems stronger than ever before, because co-CEOs Jim Balsillie and Mike Lazaridis have just been made co-chairmen of the board… presumably just so they can crack jokes about running “dual-core” board meetings. Anyhow, they’re looking at revenue for the next quarter of $5.5 to $5.7 billion and earnings per share of $1.74 to $1.80, both of which outstrip estimates, on device sales of 14 million. Any PlayBooks in that figure, do you suppose? RIM beats earnings estimates, falls just shy on subscriber growth; co-CEOs now co-chairmen, too originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 16 Dec 2010 17:31:00 EDT. Continue reading …There’s no Scandinavian-themed video this time around, but Opera Software has just released the final, non-beta version of its Opera 11 web browser, which promises a couple of big changes and a slew of other more minor refinements. Among the biggest additions are what Opera calls “tab stacking,” which lets you create groups of tabs to manage dozens of open web pages a bit more effectively, and “visual mouse gestures,” which is sort of like mulitouch gestures but — you know — with a mouse. You’ll also now get extensions, along with a new and improved (and “safer”) address bar, and a so-called “mail panel” that’s basically a built-in email client. Head on past the break for the complete press release, and hit up the link below to start downloading. Continue reading …Dell, you wouldn’t toy with our emotions again, would you? The latest official update from the boys and girls in Round Rock says that if you managed to get an order for a Venue Pro in by the 14th of this month, you’re golden for receiving it before Christmas — which is a considerably friendlier estimate than before , when some folks were being told January 6th. If you’ve ordered since the 14th, the company advises that you “use the Estimated Delivery Date to understand when you will receive it.” Meanwhile, if your Venue Pro has already managed to leave the warehouse , we recommend you use this opportunity to gloat in this post’s comments and as many forums as you possibly can. Continue reading …You’ve already seen ninjas take on the Nexus S box, now see the device laid out component-by-component, thrashed by some sick and twisted individual. Nothing too crazy to see here, except perhaps the awesome curves of the front display laid out (another shot after the break). It’s interesting to note that only the front panel is actually curved — “the rest of the components are flat as a board, just as any other phone on the market.” Hope that doesn’t ruin any dreams you might’ve had. Check out the Full Monty over at iFixit. Continue reading …China has launched a state-sponsored micro-blogging site which is apparently identical to Twitter , except that it’s run by the Chinese government, of course. The brand new social network, named Red Microblog, is run by a local propaganda department in Chongqing and its purpose is to promote the official revolutionary spirit of the Chinese government. So far, the messages seem to be living up to that ideal: “I really like the words by Chairman Mao that ‘the world is ours; we should work together’,” microblogged Bo Xilai, a local party secretary. Of course, Red Microblog does has not yet suffered from the inevitable influx of celebrities with inane aphorisms to dish out, b-listers hawking diet scams, and of course — people talking about their lunches, the weather, and whether or not Tron is going to totally rule. Come to thing of it, Red Microblog sounds pretty awesome. For now. Continue reading …If the current crop of active shutter 3D televisions isn’t your style and you’d prefer some cheaper specs, say hello to VIZIO’s new 65-inch Theater 3D Razor XVT3D650SV LED set, its biggest TV yet. Previously spotted lurking about on the manufacturer’s website , this set uses cheap polarized glasses like the ones in most movie theaters unlike the more expensive (and, according to the press release, more prone to dimming and flickering) active shutter glasses used on most televisions today, including a few of VIZIO’s own . Beyond that, it’s a 120Hz edge lit LED LCD set that comes with four pairs of glasses and also includes VIZIO Internet Apps and SRS TruSurround integrated speakers. The downside for the cheap glasses however, is that most of the cost is in the display itself ratcheting the price up to $3,499 when it arrives on Sam’s Club shelves this month — until then, check the details in the press release after the break. Continue reading …Chumby isn’t just taking its platform to dedicated devices from other manufacturers, it’s also moving to software — a strategy that right out of Amazon’s playbook now that Kindle is available on just about every computer and handheld under the sun. The company’s new Android app simply connects to your Chumby account and lets you view and use the same Flash-based apps that you would on any other Chumby device, a testament to the fact that pretty much every Android handset hitting the market these days comes Flash-capable out of the box. Chumby says that the app works best for tablets and docked devices — which makes sense when you think of how you’d use a Sony Dash or Chumby One — and conveniently, you can set it to automatically show up as a screen saver whenever your phone is docked. Look for it in the Market right now for $4.99; follow the break for the full press release.
