Samsung’s CES 2011 camera lineup: DualView ST700, PL170 and PL120 / WB210 and PL210

Samsung, taking it easy at CES ? Not a chance. Hot on the heels of a smorgasbord of new HD gear comes a five-pack of new cameras. Three of ‘em are situated in the company’s growing DualView line, which places a display on the front that makes self-portraits entirely easier to snap. The ST700 point-and-shoot includes a 16.1 megapixel sensor, 5x optical zoom, dual image stabilization, a 3-inch touchscreen on the rear, a 1.8-inch screen on the front, 720p movie mode, an ISO range that tops out at 3200 and a $279.99 retail price. The PL170 ($199.99) is also equipped with a 16.1 megapixel sensor and a 5x optical zoom, but the screen on the front is stepped down to 1.5-inches and the feature set is scaled back. The PL120 is the lowest-end of the new DualViews, with a downsized 2.7-inch rear LCD and a $149.99 price point. In related news, the WB210 (shown above) and PL210 are also debuting today, with the former touting a 12x zoom lens, a 22.4mm thick body and a 14 megapixel sensor. The PL210 goes with a 10x optical zoom, 27mm wide-angle lens, a 3-inch rear LCD and a 14 megapixel sensor. These are slated to go on sale next month for $279.99 and $199.99 in order of mention, and the full releases are waiting for your eyes just after the break. Microsoft shows off next generation of Surface, has per-pixel touch detection

Microsoft’s Surface still isn’t for consumers, but it’s getting a whole lot wilder. We just saw the next generation of Surface, which has infrared “pixel sense” detection in each pixel, meaning instead of multiple single points of touch, the screen can image your entire hand in all its detail. This should allow for some pretty wild UI improvements, but Microsoft’s primary demo was the tried-and-true rippling water effect. The technology was developed in conjunction with Samsung, and measures four inches thick — it’s obviously not going into your next tablet. Under the hood is an AMD CPU / GPU combo. The wildest part, however, is pictured above: placing a piece of paper with writing on it on top of the screen / sensor lets you “scan” the contents of that piece of paper. Microsoft showed us a demo of a bank application that lets you swipe a mailer up against the screen and have it be detected and read by the screen. As for a release, there’s no word on when this is coming out, but Microsoft says it will be cheaper than the current generation of Surface when it does. We asked about the potential for this sort of technology in smaller form factors, and were told it only scales down to around 24-inches, and we really get the feeling that Microsoft doesn’t have any plans to bring Surface to Joe Consumer any time soon. Pioneer announces Aha Radio partnership, plans for app domination

If there’s a trend at this year’s CES in the infotainment world, a sort of new common denominator that’s unifying all the players, it’s having your social media read to you while you drive. Pioneer is playing along. New you’ll also be able to listen to Facebook and Twitter updates, pull down NPR podcasts and RSS feeds, even get Yelp reviews read to you. And, yes, that Pandora integration too. Aha Radio from Harman is the provider here and initially will be supported in two of the company’s higher-end models, the AVIC-Z130BT and AVIC-X930BT. Both look to be double-DIN units with large touchscreens and built-in navigation. That’s just the beginning, though. More details after the break. Sigma Designs announces direct XMBC support for wild next-gen streamers

XBMC might be most famous for spawning Boxee , but the original project is still going strong — and it just got a big boost from Sigma Design, which will support it directly on its new TV streamer SoCs. Sigma chips are already used in streamers like the Popcorn Hour and WDTV Live , so we’d expect to see similar products make use of XBMC directly in the future — just another sign that the connected TV space is growing by leaps and bounds. Sigma’s demoing its XBMC port here at CES, we’ll let you know when we go check it out. LG Display thinks it can fix 3DTV with passive glasses & FPR

So far 3DTV hasn’t increased sales by as much as predicted, but LG Display thinks it can turn that around with three simple letters: FPR (branded Cinema 3D by its consumer arm earlier today .) Standing for Film Pattern Retarder, it places a thin film over the LCD (there’s no plans for plasma products) that allows 3D viewing with cheap, passive polarized 3D glasses instead of expensive and heavier active shutter glasses. LG plans to stop manufacturing active shutter 3D displays soon. That will further open the door for FPR, due in April in the USA, to take over with a 4K2K display to arrive this year and plans for a OLED model in 2012. We took a tour through LG Display’s house of active shutter horrors (as seen above, grammar aside) and sat in for the press conference, check the gallery for a few pictures plus more on what this means for 3D and a quick promotional video. BoxWave Keyboard Buddy iPhone case review

Ever since Apple added Bluetooth keyboard support to iOS, manufacturers have been working to deliver products that add a hard keyboard to the iPhone with at least a little bit of style. We’ve checked out a number of these before — namely the Nuu Minikey and the TK-421 — but we’ve yet to find anything that actually makes it worth the extra bulk (not to mention battery consumption). BoxWave’s Keyboard Buddy is yet another sliding keyboard case built for the iPhone, but is it better than the rest? Read on past the break to find out. Samsung RC512 snatches up Intel’s latest Core i7 CPU, RV511 sticks to older cores

Sure, Samsung’s Series 9 is all beautiful and thin, but Sammy’s rounding out its laptop family with two slightly heftier and more affordable systems. First up is the RC512 (pictured above), and the 15-inch machine is all about power — it packs Intel’s newest Core i7-2630M processor, 6GB of DDR3 memory, discrete NVIDIA GeForce 430 graphics, a Blu-ray drive, and a 750GB hard drive. For $1,150 it sounds mighty nice and even better it should be available in the coming weeks. Looking for something for half the price? The $600 15.6-inch RV511 (picture after the break) may do the trick — well, if a Core i3-380M CPU, 4GB of RAM, and a 500GB hard drive works for you. That’s all we’ve got for now on the duo, but if they’re anything like the QX410 we recently reviewed , Samsung’s going to be finding itself near the top of our favorite laptop manufacturer list. Samsung debuts world’s slimmest 3D Blu-ray player, three others that’ll get the job done

One-upping yourself, eh Samsung ? Just a year after the BD-P4600 claimed the title of world’s slimmest Blu-ray player, the outfit has introduced the BD-D7500 to take that crown and waltz all over Las Vegas. Introduces here at CES, the D7500 measures just 1.1-inches deep, and also includes 2D-to-3D conversion capabilities, 1080p upscaling, inbuilt WiFi, touch sensor control, DLNA streaming and support for Samsung Apps / Hub. Those not content with sliding this thing under their television can also mount it on a wall, but it’s on you to figure out the wiring situation. Moving on, there’s the BD-D7000 — a cube-like, slot-loading 3D Blu-ray player with most of the exact same features in a different form factor. Speaking of which, the BD-D6700 is another slimster, coated in silver and offering twin HDMI outputs and support for Android / iPhone control. Finally, the BD-D6500 deck is slim and trim, boasting 3D playback, inbuilt WiFi, a slot-loading mechanism and support for Samsung Apps and Hub features. Sadly, Samsung’s not dishing out any pricing details, but all of ‘em will be available to procure sometime between tomorrow and July 31st, 2011.
