Windows Phone 7 can now act as a WiFi remote control for iTunes

Got iTunes? Got a Windows Phone 7 device? Then you’ll probably want to check out the new Remote app in the Marketplace. It promises to make the two sing in perfect harmony by making them talk over a WiFi connection. There’s a basic set of iTunes controls at your WP7 phone’s disposal, including volume, starting /stopping music, and searching by album, artist, and song, and a corresponding piece of desktop software you need to install to make the magic happen. It’s compatible with both Windows (XP and above) and Mac OS (10.5.8 and above), so all you really need now are $1.99 for the mobile app and the overwhelming desire to control your playlists remotely. Nook Color meet Ubuntu, Ubuntu meet Nook Color

Although you won’t hear this through official channels, Barnes and Noble’s Nook has been plenty of fun for hacksters . And what spells fun better than U-b-u-n-t-u? Certainly nothing that we can mention in mixed company, that’s for sure! If you pop over to the always lively XDA Developers Forum, you’ll see a crazy little post wherein the author took inspiration from a Nexus One hack and decided to port Ubuntu to the Nook Color. And by jove, it looks like it’s worked… even if it is by accounts “a little laggy” and not without errors. Please feel free to hit the source link if you’d like to take in the details on what made this work… and to keep abreast of further developments, to boot. Library of Congress receives 200,000 vintage master recordings from Universal, will stream them online

The US Library of Congress hasn’t been shy about embracing the modern age of digital media, though in this case it’s having to deal with some decidedly lower-fi data storage. Universal Music Group has announced it’s donating over 200,000 master recordings of early 20th century music to the Library, which will be cataloged and digitized — for future safekeeping and in order to be streamed online starting in the spring. It doesn’t seem, however, that the intellectual property rights will be passing with these recordings, as the press release states this agreement continues the Library’s “unprecedented authority to stream commercially owned sound recordings online.” Either way, it’s good to know that the original copies of works by the likes of Louis Armstrong, Billy Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald will reside in the hands of an organization dedicated to their preservation. Full press release follows after the break. AMD CEO Dirk Meyer resigns, CFO Seifert takes interim role

What a day for chip news, eh? First NVIDIA and Intel set aside their vicious rhetoric in a $1.5 billion cross-licensing deal , and now AMD is shaking things up at the very top. Now-former CEO Dirk Meyer has resigned in what the company is a calling a “mutual agreement” between him and the Board of Directors. Interim CEO will be CFO Thomas Seifert, who has asked not to be considered as a candidate for the next chief. A search committee for the next CEO is currently being led by Board Chairman Bruce Claflin. The circumstances behind Meyer’s departure remain a mystery, but something tells us they can’t be as ridiculous as the last major CEO resignation we saw around these parts. California Supreme Court says warrantless searches of suspects’ text messages are legal

Planning on getting arrested in California any time soon? You’d better make sure your text archives are free from any incriminating information as the state’s Supreme Court has now ruled it legal for police to check your missives folder without the need for a warrant. The justification for this privacy intrusion is that a phone search is “incidental” to a lawful arrest and its contents, much like the contents of your pockets or bags, fall within the realm of reasonable search. Two of the judges in the case did dissent, with one noting that “never before has it been possible to carry so much personal or business information in one’s pocket or purse,” which she argues should afford your iPhone, Droid or BB a higher level of privacy protection than, say, the packet of gummy bears you have in the other pocket. Ford Focus Electric pops a hatch and shows all that battery junk in its trunk

The five-door Ford Focus is an eminently practical vehicle, and the Electric version will be as well. However, we’re now learning that it won’t be quite as practical as we’d hoped. We didn’t get the chance to pop the rear hatch on the thing when we were exploring it at CES . Here in Detroit we did and you can see what we found above. That’s definitely a big ‘ol box, putting a hurting on cargo space, but ultimately a small price to pay for rolling totally fuel- and emissions-free. Mercedes SLS AMG E-Cell hitting dealerships in 2013

You may disagree with the car’s color and its powertrain choice, but you can’t argue with 528 horsepower, 649lb/ft of torque, and AWD acceleration so good it should come with a neck brace. It’s a legitimately hot car, and it’s legitimately coming to dealerships. Mercedes today confirmed that the SLS AMG E-Cell will be available for order at dealerships in 2013, and while no price was given, expect it to be a lot. The gasoline-powered model cost around $200,000, after all. Oh, and that citrus color? It’s pretty stunning in the flesh, a matte hue that makes you go “Mmm.” Gallery: Mercedes SLS AMG E-Cell Mercedes SLS AMG E-Cell hitting dealerships in 2013 originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 10 Jan 2011 14:33:00 EDT. Apple drops iPhone 3GS to $49 on contract, we pretend the timing is coincidental

Hey, a phone that Apple introduced back in 2009 (that’d be the iPhone 3GS) is now selling — brand new with a two-year voice / data agreement — for $49, both at AT&T and through Apple directly. Of course, you could get the far more capable iPhone 4 for a fair amount more, or you could wait until tomorrow so you’d actually have an option when it comes to carriers. Your call, obviously. Palm Voice Test portal foreshadows Verizon’s LTE voice plans, quasi-affirms new pricing

See that image above? It’s not a forthcoming Palm LTE phone for Verizon Wireless, but it could be a sneak peek into Big Red’s plans for the future. If you’ll recall, VZW’s CTO Tony Malone hinted last week at CES that integrated LTE voice + data wouldn’t come until 2012 or 2013 at the earliest, and for now, all LTE devices would be relying on 3G for voice and 4G for data. Heck, not even all of the first-wave LTE devices will support simultaneous 4G data + 3G voice. Of course, we all know that LTE voice is coming eventually, and a new test portal at Verizon’s official website may be a clue as to how things will be arranged once it’s live. We’re guessing that an admin simply populated this page with information and images from the standard Pre Plus page — there’s no way an LTE-enabled Pre is planning to slink into VZW’s lineup — but it’s pretty obvious that at least someone within the company is thinking about a world where voice calls are completed over LTE. Potentially more interesting is the “4G plan pricing on this phone” line — during Verizon’s second LTE presser at CES , none of the executives on stage would talk dollars and cents, but this makes it fairly clear that there will definitely be separate plans for 4G phones, most likely ones with higher prices . Feel free to hit the source link if you’d like to poke around, but we wouldn’t expect it to remain online for much longer. One more look is after the break.
