Sony asks for restraining order against Geohot, fail0verflow over PS3 exploits

We knew Sony would be non-plussed about the PlayStation 3 jailbreak , and now we have a better idea as to the full extent of its anger. The company has filed suit (not yet, see below) asked for a restraining order against George ” Geohot ” Hotz, the “hacking group” fail0verflow (Hector Cantero, Sven Peter, “Bushing,” and “Segher”), and numerous John / Jane Does over the exploit and its release. To be more specific, the company cites violations of Digital Millennium Copyright Act, the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, various copyright infringements, and other acts of binary malfeasance. A temporary restraining order has also been sought, asking that all “circumvention tools” be taken offline and his computers and related media (i.e. anything storing said tools) be impounded. It looks like Geohot’s servers are being slammed at the moment, so we’ve gone ahead and hosted the relevant PDFs ourselves below. We’re still sifting through ourselves and will let you know what we unearth. Update: Nilay here — let’s take a look at what’s going on. This isn’t a “lawsuit” in the traditional sense, since Sony hasn’t filed a complaint for copyright infringement or whatever against Geohot and friends. Instead, the company appears to be trying to shove the genie back in the bottle and have the jailbreak and any information about the jailbreak removed from the web by filing a temporary restraining order. That might work in the short term — Geohot’s already pulled his pages down — but history suggests that the forces of paperwork rarely triumph over the righteous anger of nerds, and that this code is out there for good. That said, we’ll see what the court says tomorrow; although we very much doubt Sony’s melodramatic proposed motion and order will be granted as written, we wouldn’t be surprised if some sort of order is eventually granted — and then from there a formal lawsuit is likely just a few days away. Augen demos new family of caffeine-inspired tablets, teases dual-booting Android and Ubuntu slate

It’s baaack! Yep, that up there is Augen’s next version of its Gentouch 78 (you know, the Kmart tablet ) — henceforth known as the Gentouch Latte. But Augen isn’t stopping there, it has a few more tablet treats coming, and we got a chance to check ‘em out in Vegas. Hit the break for the lowdown on the company’s four new tablets and don’t forget to stop on by the gallery below to peruse the hands-on shots. WVIL’s unbelievable 31 megapixel cameraphone is unbelievably fake, attempts pathetic viral campaign

Honestly, we never thought people could get this high and drunk in Vegas, but the guys from WVIL were really pushing it. Their crime? A blatantly staged viral campaign for an “unbelievable” smartphone that sports a 31 megapixel CMOS full frame sensor. Oh, and it has an interchangeable lens, too, with which you can use the main body as a wireless viewfinder (like the Samsung SH100 paired up with an Android phone). Nice concept, WVIL, just too bad your mom called to disown you at CES. Video after the break. Yantouch Black Diamond 3D ambience iPhone dock hands-on

While we weren’t busy kicking up dust on the CES floors, we sat down with Taiwan-based Yantouch to have a fiddle with its latest product, the Black Diamond. When not in use, it really is just a gorgeous spherical black diamond, or at least its faceted front half is; but slip in an iPhone 4 with the Black Diamond app enabled, and you get a funky sound sensitive mood lamp. On top of that, the dock also charges up your iPhone while it shows off its colors, and somewhere at the bottom there’s some black magic that channels out amplified audio from the phone, although actual speakers would be even nicer. Ultimately, Yantouch sees the Black Diamond as a developing platform for potential applications like an outdoor temperature indicator, or some sort of caller ID color tagging tool for seeing from afar who’s calling. If all goes well, Yantouch will even consider making an Android version, but we’re not sure if the $79 price tag will immediately catch on. Anyhow, check out our hands-on video after the break. ‘Arduino The Documentary’ now available for your streaming pleasure

Over the years we’ve seen loads of Arduino hacks and mods — a DIY kit that lets plants tweet , a robotic iPhone , and even touchscreen GBA SP . All of these impressive, heartwarming and otherwise inspiring projects were made possible by the Arduino platform. Just in case you’re unfamiliar with what Arduino actually is, let us remind you that it’s an open source project geared toward students and other humans who wish to delve into the wild, wacky world of do-it-yourself electronics hardware and software coding. We’d encourage you to check out the documentary in full — you know, to get the skinny on the company’s inception and watch as the Arduino folks talk about their movement and its future — but we doubt you need our elbowing. Check out all 28 minutes of footage after the break. Virtual pipe organist is the Phantom of his own living room

If any instrument deserves to be geeked over, it is the pipe organ . Over the course of its almost 2,000 years of development, it has evolved from the rudimentary Greek water organ to the extremely complex device featured in cathedrals and concert halls all over the world. And this is all well and good, but what is an aspiring (or accomplished) organist to do when he wants to practice yet doesn’t have access to Saint-Germain l’Auxerrois in Paris? Well, he might go ahead and build your own — at least that’s what an Engadget reader named Rob Stefanussen did. The heart of the thing is a Mac Pro running Hauptwerk’s Virtual Organ, and while the software is pretty impressive itself, what caught our attention was the baroque MIDI controller he built to play the thing. Featuring four keyboards, a pedalboard, pistons, and expression shoes, this thing plays like the real deal. And not to be undone in the sound department, he threw in six speakers and A sub-woofer, routing different sets of pipes to the different speakers to let the sound mix in the air for that authentic pipe organ sound. Wild, no? How would you like to hear it in action? Check out the video after the break to see (and hear) it for yourself. Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance SP once had an autostereoscopic screen

It may seem like 3D sprung from the ashes of discontentment — not to mention red / blue glasses — but Nintendo never stopped believing. It’s been secretly refining stereoscopic tech for years in the likes of the Game Boy Advance and GameCube. And while president Satoru Iwata already mentioned early last year that the GameCube had hidden 3D circuits, he recently revealed that the 3DS’s autostereoscopic panel actually dates back to the clamshell Game Boy Advance SP. Which, as you might recall, also once sported a touchscreen . At the time, his story goes, LCD resolution was too low to generate a sharp image, but the optometrist-friendly glasses-free tech was already in place. Of course, if you truly want to consult the history books, you can consider Nintendo’s entry into the market to be the Famicom 3D System shutter glasses pictured above… which hit stores in Japan way back in 1986. Yeah, we know. Nintendo’s Game Boy Advance SP once had an autostereoscopic screen originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 11 Jan 2011 18:48:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds . Permalink

Bug Labs’ BUGswarm and Verizon BUGbundle hands-on

Remember Bug Labs , the guys building open-source hardware modules that make it easy (and relatively inexpensive) to prototype new gadgets of your own creation? The last time we visited with these guys at the spring CTIA show last year, the company’s upgraded BUGbase 2.0 was still in mockup form — and carrier deals were little more than a gleam in CEO Peter Semmelhack’s eye. Nearly a year has passed since then, and Bug’s ecosystem has grown considerably to encompass a bunch of third-party modules, prototyped products, and carrier-specific packs for Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon that let your meticulously hacked-together hardware communicate over the network of your choice. Of course, this all necessitated a follow-up meeting, which we were delighted to have at CES a couple days ago. Read on! Louis Vuitton cellphone belt buckle is fake, potentially harmful to your manhood

This Louis Vuitton cellphone belt buckle comes to us by way of China and brings together two things that should never be combined: fake designer belts and wireless communication. First off, we’ve all heard the warnings about a cellphone’s proximity to our baby-makers; second, we’re pretty sure that taking your belt off every time you get a call will not only lead to frustration, but some pretty weird looks on the subway; and finally, it’s a fake. Look, it’s not like we’re anti-excess here, but it seems to us like a solid gold cellphone is a far more practical investment. This rather ridiculous contraption apparently comes complete with Bluetooth earpiece and built-in camera, and supports dual card standby and TF card expansion. You know how we feel about it, but if you must, there’s a video after the jump.
