Ready for a little sexy video of a camera that is, itself, also filming video? Check out the clip below of a RED EPIC capturing some luscious scenery in California, outfitted with a carbon fiber lens hood — what else? The camera is being worked by Emmy-winning producer and directory Steve Gibby, who indicates the camera is “amazingly light,” that “the finish of the stuff is spot-on,” and even the menus are “straightforward and easy to navigate.” Encouraging? Yes, if you have the money to spend. If you don’t, enjoy the video below and then click on the Vimeo source link for a bunch more, including one of the thing coming out of the box and getting assembled. [Thanks, Ben] Continue reading Another RED EPIC spotted in the wild, shooting in California (video) Another RED EPIC spotted in the wild, shooting in California (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 14 Feb 2011 20:31:00 EDT. Continue reading …That’s right human beings — it’s happening again! The Engadget crew is getting together their best party outfits and shipping out west for another installment of our fabulous reader meetups. Our last event in NYC drew loads of people and was an all around blast, and the San Francisco installment is sure to be just as explosive (or maybe more? c’mon… show us what you’ve got). This time around we’re partnering with Sprint, as well as Sony PlayStation , HP , Roku , Samsung , VUDU , RIM , Sling , Sonos , HTC , and loads of other players in our industry (we’re still adding to the list!) to bring you a night of gadget geeking , giveaways , delicious foodstuffs , and some awesome music (provided by none other than our podcast producer, Trent Wolbe). The all ages shindig will take place at City View at The Metreon , which is located conveniently in downtown SF. If you’re a nerd in the city, you most likely already know what we’re talking about. The doors will open at 6:30PM , and capacity is limited to 1200 people — so if you want to get inside, get there early! We’re going to be flooding the interwaves with more information soon, but for now, mark the date on your calendars, and get ready to party. Continue reading …The President revealed his 2012 budget proposal today, including $853 million for nuclear energy research — which includes development of “mini-nukes,” or small, modular reactors that can be shipped and deployed relatively quickly, and built relatively cheaply (up to $2 billion, as opposed to the $10 billion price tag of your traditional reactor). But don’t get excited — you won’t likely be able to get your own backyard reactor just yet. For the time being, they’re to be placed in existing large-scale labs like the Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee. It is hoped that the reactors will bring a 28 percent reduction of the Energy Department’s carbon footprint by 2020. Continue reading …In the grand scheme of things, one millimeter may not seem like a lot, but in the smartphone arms race toward ever-slimmer devices, measurements like that matter. Synaptics , best known for building laptop touchpads, has ventured into the capacitive touchscreen realm with a new panel that promises to save exactly that much space: 1mm. But that’s only the start. You see, the thinner display profile is the result of Synaptics melding the touch-sensing layer and the display into one, using what it calls in-cell technology, with the result being something roughly comparable to Samsung’s Super AMOLED implementation . The benefit of going with Synaptics, however, is that the company’s tech is compatible with all display types, meaning that everything from garden variety LCDs to high-density IPS panels can be infused with a bit of touch sensitivity. Additional benefits include extra brightness, as there is one fewer layer for light to get through, and significantly higher sensitivity than on most current generation touch panels. You can see a pretty compelling demo of that on video just past the break. The ClearPad 3250 should find its way to shipping devices over the next nine months, with its current iteration capable of being fitted to screens up to five inches in size and a subsequent model scaling all the way out to eight inches. Continue reading …It’s finally here — our Atrix 4G review! We know you’ve waited and wondered, and we’ve finally had enough time with the phone, laptop dock, HD / desktop dock, and all the accessories to give you a proper take on this utterly unique smartphone. Did we say smartphone? Really that’s not quite right, because the dual-core-CPU-sporting device actually does quadruple duty as a laptop, set top box, desktop computer, and… well, it works as a smartphone too. The Atrix 4G, which sports a 4-inch, 960 x 540 display, HSPA+ data, and a slew of other juicy specs is absolutely the first of its kind — a multi-use device intended to replace your netbook (and maybe more) via its Webtop environment. But can a phone be powerful enough to become your laptop or hub of your home theater? Is Motorola’s new phone set to be the king of the Android heap, or just another face in the crowd? All these questions (and more) will be answered in our full review… which you can read after the break! Continue reading …Didn’t get around to taking advantage of Best Buy’s new Bieber / Ozzy-promoted Buy Back program before the post-Super Bowl free-for-all period expired on February 12th? Then it looks like you’re in luck — the company’s just announced that it’s extending the free offer until February 26th. Unlike like the previous promotion that applied to a whole range electronics, however, this latest extension only covers smartphones and tablets, although you can obviously still purchase Buy Back coverage for other devices (a laptop or netbook will run you $69.99). Those that opt for it will be able to sell their devices back to Best Buy for “up to” 50 percent of the original purchase price, which they’ll naturally receive in the form of a Best Buy gift card. Better than eBay? Maybe not — but it’s not the worst option to have while it’s free. Head on past the break for the complete press release. Continue reading …Just like Boxee, Verizon’s rolled out a February 14th update to users with the FiOS DVR Manager for iPhone , who might actually be on Verizon for their phones now too. It adds support for controlling multiple DVRs, a refreshed UI to match the latest version 1.9 on set-top boxes , access for non-DVR users, and a “What’s Hot” feature showing what others in your area are watching. Our friend Dave Zatz has already gone hands-on with the new version 1.5.0 and reports an improved experience with a smoother login process to boot, although he noted it could still improve by integrating itself into the remote control app that’s also available. Continue reading …Qualcomm has apparently figured out what it takes to get Netflix on Android, announcing “future devices” with its Snapdragon mobile processors (like the LG Revolution ) will meet all of the DRM requirements for Watch Instantly . Unfortunately that doesn’t seem to bode well for your existing Android device, but at least future phones won’t have to look on Windows Phone 7 and iOS with envy. Besides a turnkey package for manufacturers to support Netflix in their devices, it also promises plenty of dedicated decoding power to enhance battery life and improve picture quality which can be observed as it demos the Netflix app (hope they brought their own proxy) at Mobile World Congress this week.
