Bloomberg: Microsoft to pay Nokia ‘more than $1 billion’ to make Windows Phones

Though neither Nokia nor CEO Stephen Elop ever said there was an exchange of billions of dollars as a part of the company’s tie-up with Microsoft for the Windows Phone platform, Bloomberg is sourcing “two people with knowledge of the terms” in saying that something in excess of $1 billion is flowing from Redmond to Espoo. Though the deal isn’t yet finalized — Elop said as much back at MWC — it’d apparently call for Microsoft to pay out at least some of the cash upfront with Nokia sending cash in the other direction for device licenses. Interestingly, the deal is said to give Microsoft access to parts of Nokia’s expansive patent portfolio — and they’ll have it for quite some time, too: the contract’s apparently going to be good for “more than five years.” That’s more than most marriages, it seems (and roughly as expensive). Nokia E7 up for pre-order in the states with presumed April delivery

Dedicated stateside Nokia watchers, we have good news: the E7 is up for pre-order on the company’s American storefront for a hearty $679. Set to ship in the beginning of April, this bad boy has been kicking around Amazon since late last year, and much to our surprise the price hasn’t changed one penny since then. Of course, if you’d gone through Amazon Prime you’d have saved $4 on shipping (which you probably need after spending the better half of a grand on a handset). Get out your credit card and hit the source link! JVC’s GS-TD1 3D camcorder now available for $1,700

JVC promised back at CES that its new consumer-grade GS-TD1 3D camcorder would be available in March and, well, it’s now available. While that may not be a surprise, JVC has shaken things up a bit with the pricing since its official announcement — instead of the full $2,000 that was originally expected, the camcorder will now set you back “just” $1,699.95. That will buy you a pair of 3.32 megapixel CMOS sensor that record 3D video at 1080i, a 5x optical zoom (or 10x in 2D mode), 64GB of built-in flash memory along with an SDXC card slot for expansion, and a 3.5-inch LCD that lets you view your videos 3DS -style without any glasses. Head on past the break for the complete press release. Tesla Model S pricing and delivery details confirmed

Tesla took the opportunity just before CES to reassure potential buyers that its Model S wouldn’t follow the competition by creeping up in price ahead of release, and now we have what looks to be final confirmation: a full MSRP, complete with prices for all the different battery options. A base Model S, with an estimated 160 miles of range, will retail for $57,400 and will of course be eligible for the $7,500 federal tax credit. The 230 mile range version will carry a $10,000 premium, and if you want a chance at making 300 miles on a charge it’s another $10k on top of that. So, $77,400 then if you want the top of the line Model S 300, which initially will be called the “Model S Signature Series” in the US, a limited edition run of 1,000 autos with big batts. Deliveries are expected to begin sometime around the summer of 2012, with the 230 and 160 versions coming later in the year. Tesla hopes to produce 5,000 of the cars in total in 2012, a whopping 20,000 in 2013. Oh, and should you live in a market that requires a right-hand drive model you have about a two year wait ahead of you. That’s what you get for driving on the wrong side of the road. N64Boy Advance is one fine lookin’ Nintendo 64 handheld

If you head on over to the Modded By Bacteria message boards you’ll find that forum member Hailrazer has put together a little somethin’ that he likes to call the N64Boy Advanced. And like all successful mods, not only does the thing look good, it also boasts tweaks suited to the builder’s tastes: he uses a Gamecube joystick instead of one from a Nintendo 64 controller, he’s decreased the smaller trigger buttons (which our man hardly ever uses), and done away with the d-pad altogether (ditto). The case itself is an old Game Boy Advanced carrying case (with the N64 board cut down to fit) and speakers, a 4.3-inch display, and a couple camcorder batteries thrown in for good measure. Of all the modes we’ve seen from Hailrazer , this might be out favorite yet! See for yourself after the break. NEC turns your arm into a touch-sensitive remote control

You may ask yourself, why bother tapping touchscreens or physical buttons when an accelerometer can be strapped to the wrist, turning any ol’ arm into a wireless touch panel? That’s the claim that NEC is making today. A wrist-worn band of compact acceleration sensors divides the arm into seven sections along the upper, middle, and lower arm that can then be assigned as virtual inputs to an electronic device. No more reaching into a bag to answer the phone, no more plucking at the strings of a guitar to create song — everything is controlled through a natural tap of the arm or clap of the hands. Once in a lifetime tech that feels the same as it ever was. ExoPC set to release two all-in-ones in June, bringing its UI to MeeGo

Last we left off in the ExoPC story, the company had just brought its tablet to Microsoft retail stores , and while the startup’s CEO Jean-Baptiste Martinoli says the sales have been strong (in the 10,000 range), it’s getting ready to branch into new areas. The first keeps it in Microsoft’s camp, as the company plans to release two Windows 7 all-in-ones with its Connect Four-like software later in June. Both will be made by Malata, however, the 18.5-inch version — which is pictured above and is demoed in the video after the break — will be powered by a dual-core Atom processor, while the 23-inch version will get some higher-end silicon. It also turns out that some other top tier manufacturers plan to bring Win 7 all-in-ones to market this year running ExoPC’s software on top. The second area of development? MeeGo . The company’s been hard at work bringing its HTML-based layer over to Intel’s MeeGo OS, and 70 percent of the software is already complete. Additionally, 98 percent of the Flash and HTML apps are compatible, however, it’s working on syncing the Exostore with Intel’s AppUp selection. As you can see in the screenshot after the break, it looks almost identical to the Windows 7 skin, but we’re definitely feeling the UI over Intel’s own MeeGo tablet interface . Hit the break for that AIO video and stay tuned for hands-on with the MeeGo tablet version. Samsung demos ambient light-powered transparent LCD

Wirelessly-powered TVs are nice, and transparent displays are cool and all, but what about an ambient light-powered transparent LCD? Well, that’s nothing short of awesome. Samsung showed off just such a device at CeBIT 2011 last week — a prototype 46-inch display with 1920 x 1080 resolution and ten-finger touchscreen capability. We aren’t sure what kind of black magic Sammy put in this thing, but it’s an incredible feat of engineering to make such a large display — and its accompanying solar cells — efficient enough to run exclusively off the juice it pulls from surrounding light sources. No word on how the photon-powered LCD compares to existing HD monitors in terms of brightness, refresh rates, or color reproduction, but a muted picture is a small price to pay for cutting the electrical cord permanently . Pay-as-you-go shocker! CDMA iPhone 4 makes its way to Cricket Wireless (via jailbreak)

As any astute follower of the “pay-as-you-go” world knows, there are quite a few back alley Cricket dealers (and quite a few main street ones as well) that will happily flash any phone you give them for use on their network — and not even Verizon’s CDMA iPhone is immune. Ready to jump ship from “America’s largest?” Of course, you’ll have to jailbreak, install some third party MMS software, and trust some random dude at the Cricket store with your precious smartphone. We’re not saying it’s wise, but it is possible, as the video below attests. See for yourself after the break. [Thanks, Mark] Continue reading Pay-as-you-go shocker!
